Happy Birthday To Me ((Closed Ivan and Dmitri/Ego/Alek/Annabelle))
Ego: The engineer walked into the lab, heading down his usual way and raising an eyebrow curiously at the darkness. Sure, he was always in the dark too, but Ivan wasn’t normally sulking in a pit of depression. Apparently the birthday hats he brought weren’t exactly going to be useful today.
Staring at the monitors, and the silhouette probably being Ivan in front of them, which seemed to be the only sources of light in the lab, the engineer took a step forward, hats and the bottle of wine as a gift still in his hand. “…So should I turn on the lights or are you going to go blind?”
Ivan: Ivan was glad that Ego was actually able to show up on time, but he was in no mood for humor. It was his birthday, afterall. Looking up as Ego approached him, he offered a chair not too far from them. “The others are either still asleep, or have yet to arrive in the case of one. Before we go, I wanted you to understand the significance of this trip, as well as who else is going. There are some things I have not gotten to catch you up on. Nothing terrible, just things you should know.”
Ego: “Oh come on, it can’t be that bad, can it?” Tony huffed in reply, walking over and sitting down at the seat offered to him. He slid the bottle of wine over to the other, along with one of the five birthday hats he brought. “You’re supposed be happy on your birthday, you know. It makes things pleasant around these parts, so smile.” Well, he tried to cheer the other up anyway. Obviously it was to no avail. “Fine. Talk to me. I’m listening to what you have to say, but I really don’t think you should be moping on your birthday, Pinstripe.”
Ivan: Despite himself, Ivan’s lips curved into a small smile. It was less at Ego’s jests, and more at his making of them. The effort was appreciated more than Tony would ever know. Still, it had to be made clear why his birthday was such a melancholy event.”My birthday is not the celebration of my entering the world. Not for me. I see my birthday…..as the anniversary of the day my parents were killed, and I was taken into custody by the men who made me waht I am.” The words were spoke in monotone, ringing hollow. He could no longer feel pain at speaking them, no longer shed tears for his loss. Today was a day to pay his respects.
Ego: He froze at the words, swallowing hard before turning his head away. No wonder why Ivan never talked about his parents. Hell, no wonder why Ivan never talked about anything in his past, but it all made sense now. Taking in a deep breath, Tony turned back to him and forced a smile. “Man, I’m sorry. But you know full well I didn’t know. I just wanted to make things better, you know? I - …I’m really sorry about your parents and well… all of that. But if it makes you feel any better, look at where you are now? Look at what you have!” Tony spread his arms out, gesturing to the lab, doing his best to show a truthful, honest smile. “You’re great now… but I suppose it’s nice to visit where you came from before, right? I’m glad you’re letting me come with you.”
Ivan: Another smile. Ego had that affect on him in a way very few could claim. “The sentiment is…appreciated, Tony. Still…I do this every year. The past…..it is what I went through to get to my present. I can never forget it, never truly let it go, and never is that more true than it is when about this day. This is the day that brought me down the path I have been on for the last 68 years. The pivotal turning point of all that I am. Naturally, that means it carries a great weight for me. As for bringing you with me…..this is a sign of improvement. Every year prior, I have been alone. This year…..I’m acknowledging the fact that I no longer am.”
Ego: It was sudden, almost immediate, but upon hearing Ivan’s realization that he wasn’t alone, Ego leaned over and pulled him into a tight hug. It wasn’t something Tony would normally do, and hell it was probably something Ivan would punch him in the face for later, but it was a real hug, something he rarely ever did. “I’m glad things are improving. I’m glad you’re bringing me with you. I’m just… really, I’m just really glad, Borskov.” Pulling away, Tony smiled at the other, something far more genuine than previously. “So when are we heading out? I still think we should do something to have your mood fantastic in the end. Strip club, Chicago bar, science, something.”
Ivan: Ivan’s eyes widened greatly as he was pulled into the entirely unexpected hug. Despite how much it meant to him, he did not move at all while it was happening. Then Tony pulled away and mentioned doing something before the trip, Ivan plainly continued in the same monotone as before. “There is more. As I said earlier, we are not the only ones going. Annabelle and Dmitri will be joining us, as well as a man I recently reconnected with. He….he’s known me longer than anyone still alive. He’s family, and so I invited him along. I normally don’t make this into a group thing, but I feel that the most important individuals in my life should be present for….for this time.”
Ego: Well, he tried. Ego let out a disappointed sigh as he nodded his head, listening to the other without a word. Annabelle, sure, Dmitri was fine too. He got along with Dmitri and Annabelle was never a problem - they haven’t ever actually spoken, have they? But there was someone else? Someone who’s known him longer than anyone else. Someone who was family - …There was nothing to worry about, Tony wasn’t one to worry about those things. But they must have been close. Closer than Tony’s ever gotten to Ivan but he wasn’t going to make that a problem. He wasn’t going to be jealous for something as petty as this. “Is there something special about this time around, Pinstripe? I mean, this is really sudden, isn’t it? I’m still coming, but what makes this year different?”
Ivan: “…..It’s the last one.” He remained silent for many seconds, nearly a full minute, before finally elaborating. “I can never fully let go of my past…..but I can stop living in it. Every year, for a day, I have made myself back into that 10 year old boy that watched his parents die….I speak to the graves, as though they can hear me, and tell them what the last year has provided for me…and then I leave. This year…..I was provided with a new family. I no longer need to cling to my parents anymore. I can’t let go of my past entirely…but….I can finally let go of /them/. I…” He choked on the words, closing his eyes for a mment as he pressed on. “I don’t need them…anymore..”
Ego: Oh, well that hurt him more than it should have. In reality, the engineer had expected that kind of response and it only made Tony let out a sigh. “Yeah… last one…” Scratching the back of his neck, he looked back at Ivan and couldn’t help but smile. He finally has his own family, has people here with him and he could let go. It took Tony a while too, but seeing Ivan improve like this is kind of heart wrenching, but in a good way of course. “Come on.” Tony said, forcing himself to get up on his feet. “Let’s head out soon. We have a lot of miles to cover.”
Ivan: Looking up at Tony, Ivan sighed and stood as well. “Yes…we do. I hope that Alek gets here soon, and that Annabelle is awake.” Standing as well, he headed up with Tony out of the lab to wait in the living room for the others. He was already packed, and the car was loaded up with his things. He wouldn’t need much. This was going to be a primarily in and out trip.
Annabelle wasn’t sure if she should be excited or nervous. When Ivan had asked her to come with him on a trip she was naturally curious. But when she asked more about it, he appeared so solemn that she felt it best left alone. She knew he would explain things when he was ready. All she really knew was that they were going to back to his home in Russia. This would be the first time she would get to do any traveling that wasn’t out of need—like to get away from the General. She had made sure she got up early this morning so she could be ready to go. Even if she didn’t understand why, if it was important to Ivan, then it was important to her too.
She had arrived in the living room just moments before she heard other footsteps approaching. Turning, she watched the two men as they entered. “Good morning.” she offered politely. She didn’t know anyone else was joining them…was that Tony Stark? Ivan had talked about him and so had Dr. Banner but she had yet to actually meet the man.
And not even five minutes after Annabelle had shown up in the living room, appeared in the door frame; having let himself in. Fedora perched at a tilt to keep his eyes obscured from view, mostly because he'd caught himself in the mirror that morning with a certain look in his eye he wasn't so fond of, that uncertain look of travelling so soon after he'd got here and the fact they were going to Russia. Still, the scientist wouldn't let down his friend would he? And what was a trip without Alek's unorthodox sense of humor and backhanded commentary?
"Bonjour madame et monsieurs." Realizing he'd gone into french, a reflex when he was scattered, he'd let out a sharp laugh. "Force of habit. Mornin'. Are we ready to go?" Straightening himself up and checking the time. "Cause I'm not getting any younger, and neither is Ivan..." Pausing glance at Tony. "Stark. Pleasure to finally meet. As I said, we ready?"

Ivan clasped a hand over his mouth as Alek gave him an account of the events that had led to this sudden reunion. It was a lot to take in, hearing the way that things ad so completely left turned on Alek. Hearing that Alek had nowhere to go and no money to his name made Ivan truly wonder just what it took to simply get him out the country, but decided to spare Alek any inquiries on the matter. a
As Alek mentioned a ‘reunion gift’ and showed him the tablet, Ivan focused on Alek’s face before looking to see what was on the screen. “I have a mansion in the city. It’s yours now. There’s already a full equipped lab there, as well as several cars you can use to get around with. I’ll get to work on dumping some funds into a new bank account for you. For tonight, however, you can stay in one of the guest rooms here. I’m sure you’re tired from the trip.”
After making sure that was all established, not giving Alek a choice in the matter, Ivan turned his attention to the tablet in his friend’s hands. Aged brown eyes scanned the information on display, then widened greatly as he they took it all in. Alek had managed to move a great deal of Vibranium, the particular worth of shocking Ivan for what it spoke of the size. “You got out…tw….two billion dollars worth of Vibranium out of the country….and it is for me? I knew there was a reason I liked you.” He smirked, showing that the last statement was simply a jest. He then made a note of its location. “Alright..you may be tired, but we should pick this up A.S.A.P. Think you can deal with headin back out? You can leave your cases in the lab downstairs until we get back.”
Alek barely batted an eyelash, he wasn't so much phased with the fact he'd been caught out, but how soon he'd been caught out. His calculations had assured him a lengthy, a very length run. He was lucky to have gotten out at all he'd counter on that momentary lapse, and to have a solid network in which he'd span an elaborate partner empire to get away with things people would deem almost impossible. Many would damn him for being so lucky, and others would hate him cause he'd been the one to rob them blind and do it right under their nose with a polite, charming smile. Though, Alek couldn't help feel a niggling sensation of worry and concern over the fact he would become a number one target. His money and stability issues were down and washed away by that one thought, as long as he didn't become a physical target within range of laser, he'd be just dandy.
He hadn't been expecting the mansion, eyebrows knitting together and raising with Ivan's words. What had he been expecting exactly? He never got that far he realized, he'd made his plans up to getting to his front door and anything after that had been a complete mystery. "You were never one to let me have any legroom." He retorted, letting out a short laugh. "Cars for everyday of the week, a playroom, a bed and spending money. You know how to spoil a man." Shaking his head, a small grin on his face and at the mention of being tired, he shrugged. Was he tired? It'd eventually hit him like a sack of bricks, for now though his entire body was alive, alert and if it wasn't for his self control he'd be like every other man that'd escape death, or high on adrenaline. "I'm wired right now. This whole trip has been one hell of a dosed adventure. If I wasn't holdin' it together, my hands would be a blur of shakes."
The Engineer hadn't bothered to wage an arguement with Ivan, really, he knew better. It was like talking to a boulder while trying to move it, it wasn't going to talk back how you wanted it to and secondly, it wasn't going to move either. "I try don't I?" He grinned, "And succeed while I'm at it. I daresay I'm one of the best smugglers in the business. Or was. Maybe I could be again when I have my operations up and running again and regroup my contacts." Saying the last part more to himself, he'd need to pull his men back in at least to keep tabs on information on himself. "You like me anyway, you'd be lost without me Ivan, totally heartbroken." Poking back at Ivan's little joke, pulling back the tablet and setting it back in it's case. "Let's go then, sooner we get this done, the sooner you can introduce me to some of that alcohol of yours. And figure out what you're going to do with two billion dollars worth of vibranium." Gesturing for Ivan to lead on, taking his fedora and slipping it back on his head.

Ivan’s cameras allowed him to both see and hear what was going on, and he too chuckled at Alek’s joke, understanding it’s meaning. The jovial feeling was short-lived, however, as he heard that, for once, Alek did not have time on his side. That was a big red flag. Alek had always been unnaturally lucky, and seemed to consistently have as much time as he needed for anything. To hear something like that let Ivan know he was in deep, deep shit.
Ivan quickly headed upstairs and walked up from behind Dmitri, eyes locked on Alek. He placed a hand on Dmitri’s shoulder lightly. “Son, go on up to your room….this man and I have…much to discuss.”
Dmitri looked at his father, still quite confused, but relieved that his dad did know him. From the way the looked at each other, there was a fondness, not an animosity. That was enough for Dmitri to let it go and listen to Ivan’s instruction. =Whatever.= He headed to his room, taking another bite of his sandwich.
With Dmitri gone, Ivan and Alek shared a content silence, taking in the sight of each other. After a long minute, Alek finally spoke.
Hypocrite.
“What?”
You heard. You would always say there was nothing wrong with getting old. Now look at ya. Why didn’t I get a Skype call about this?
“I knew you’d never let me live it down.”
Damn right!
There was another silence, but this one was brief. During the second silence, both men coul dno longer supress the smiles that tugged at their lips, and simultaneously moved forward, clasping their arms around each other in a firm, heartfult embrace. It was the kind of hug you gave someone when it felt too long since the last time you had a chance to. The hug only lasted a few seconds, but that was enough. Afterward, Ivan wordlessly stepped to the side of the doorway to allow Alek entrance, ready to listen to his story and knowing that he did not even need to ask.
Unnaturally lucky had served him well over his years, most shown when his less than planned scenario's, methods and impulses had turned out absolutely fine and dandy. Save a couple of scrapes and heated conversations afterwards. While he had always known that one day where his luck ran short, his cards and dice wouldn't come in, any rational person could see it - he had never really expected it, and to this level. Shame he couldn't create a serum to bend luck to his will, he could dream though. His attention was immediately pulled from the teenager to the sight of Ivan, and he swore he felt the weight on his shoulders disappear entirely. Alek's face changed, eyes narrowing and a very, very smug smirk quickly appeared. Nevermind turning back the clocks, it looked like Ivan had thrown out the clock and gotten another one entirely. And he didn't tell him. He stayed like that, even after he'd dismissed his son, he'd get on to that later. Once he'd vanished entirely, the poking at Ivan's age reversal. The hug only further cemented that there he was, thousands of miles away from Wakanda, his life, which was now littered in cases, after a lifetime of being settled. he familiarity was more than a welcomed comfort. Straightening up and grasping his cases, he stepped inside without a word, waiting until he had shut the door behind him to open his mouth. "T'challa, the Wakandens and scientists found out about the smuggling operation, and began investigating. I don't think I've seen a case like it. It was easy at first, wiping information and keeping nothing recorded, written down, passwording and encrypting my phone. Nothing out of the ordinary. Then about seven months ago things got intense, they doubled everything, the funding, the agents, the Vibranium harvested and readied for transportation got it's own team. Trawled systems like it was some kind of fishing hot spot, interrogated every employee and villager. Four months into that I caught one of the scientists snooping my laboratory, caught him trying to open one of my lockboxes and siphoning through my files. Played it off as though he was looking for a personnel file he misplaced while making his rounds." Shaking his head a little at it, he had to chuckle. "That's when the red flags started waving. No one goes in my lab and leaves anything. It was little things, things that weren't so well put back together as they should be. My terminal logs would flag log ins from different locations. Flaws in scientists explanations when I quizzed them. They didn't have anything solid, no evidence, just a gaping hole in profits and their store to properly get on my tail." Pausing again, taking a breath to himself and letting his eyes wander. "Well, they were close, I imagine now that they know for sure it's me. You don't just up and leave without a word without some kind of left behind explanation. And I'm pretty sure they're going to be more than a little pissed off, I'll tell you about that in a few. I've robbed them blind for years. Christ, the back log of debt goes on longer than I've been alive I imagine. I've had this whole relocation planned for months, I've pulled more strings than I ever pulled in my life. Not even when I lived with you." He pointed out. "Can you believe it? Anyway, I'm wandering. I've got nothing. A couple of cases containing my life's important work, current projects, and I burnt the rest. There's nothing left of anything else. No money, no living arrangements." Aleksandr stopped after that, setting his cases down with care. "Ivan, man, you're the only guy I trust right now." He shrugged, giving one of his all too carefree, nonchalant smiles. One that no one in his situation would ever dare to wear. "My head is going to have a price on it, and there's going to be a point sometime down the line where this is going to come to blows. So for that, I thought of something to bring with. Sort of a fuck you to them and a reunion gift to you." Unclipping the case, he pulled out one of his tablets, powering it to life and with a flick of his finger, the transfer and holding files pulled up, containing the information, worth, location of the last shipment of Vibranium he had hauled out; tipping it towards his old friend to read.

Dmitri was on his way to the lab from the kitchen, having grabbed a snack and takin a short break from his work. As he passed the front door, he swore that he heard a knock. Wondering who it was, he walked over, a sandwich in his hand, and opened the door. Tilting his head with a great deal of confusion, Dmitri stared at the man at the door. This person was entirey new to him. He’d never seen them before, and that disturbed him. True, being so far in the ‘past’, he could not be expected to be aware of every person that ever had come in the house, but to his knowledge, there was never a surprise visit from someone that looked like this. Only a handful of people even knew how to find his dadd, not counting S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that needed to come to get Ivan for some reason or other, but this guy did not seem like an agent. No, he was someone entirely different that somehow knew where his father, and that was very wrong. It was the first major difference from what he knew that he’d run into and he did not like it. After internally screaming for several seconds, he finally opened his mouth.
=Uh……hi. Who are you?=
As this was going on, Ivan was in the lab as usual, though he wasn’t working on a project. He was instead in one of the training rooms, engaging in a bit of target practice. Even though he was a damn good shot, going through S.H.I.E.LD. basic training reminded him of the importance of a regular practice routine. If Ivan were honest, he’d been slacking on his general training for quite a while. Since making himself younger, and joining S.H.I.E.L.D., he had gotten back into the swing of keeping up with things.
Just as he was finishing up, he heard NIKOLAI’s voice fill the room.
[Ivan, there is someone at the door that I was unable to identify by searching my personal files. I am conducting a further search, but this man is proving difficulty to find. At present, Dmitri has engaged them.]
Ivan rose an eyebrow at the news. Curious, he decided he’d go and see who it was for himself. Heading out the training room and over to the main terminal, he looked at the monitors to check out the camera feed. When he saw the face of his unexpected visitor, he froze. Conflicting feelings of worry and joy fought for dominance in his mind. Unlike the other man, for whom time seemed to easily flow, and not affect, Ivan had felt all too well the long 23 years since he had last seen that face in person.
Did Alek expect a teenager to open the door? Not at all. So when the door swung open to reveal him there, his eyebrows rose in surprise. Lips pursing as though he was about to launch into an explanation of who he was and why he was there, he decided against it, choosing to instead stand there virtually rolling on the back of his heels as the teen gawked at him. Mind working away, maybe he had got the wrong address, and coming to that conclusion, he should probably at some point, if the kid didn't open his mouth - to make his excuses, ring his contact again to politely inform him that he had screwed up and he'd endured an unknown teenager who looked to be having a crisis stare at him, which while amusing, and while it provided a small form of comedic relief, wasn't why he was in New York at all. "Aleksandr Tessier." A natural, almost robotic reponse but lacking the usual formality he had to front whenever meeting someone who needed his full name. "Or Alek." He added, moving to pry the fedora from the mess styled hair that lay underneath and offer a hand after he'd ruffled it through the dark brown crop. "I'm looking for Ivan Borskov." Falling silent for a few seconds himself, replaced the fedora on his head, tipping it somewhat. "It's important that I see him, and if he isn't here. I'll be on my way. As much as I would love to stay and chat with you through...whatever 21st century teenage problems, time isn't on my side for once. And I'm pretty outdated on ...that." It was more of a self-directed joke, one that he chuckled to himself at briefly.
Man, if he had really screwed up on his information, it meant another hour of phonecalls to find a place for himself and more importantly, find a place he could hold up the crate sitting pretty in plain sight. Definitely not one of his most thought out plans, outside of escaping Wakanda and navigating his way over international space. Oh well, he'd take it as it came, didn't he always? It was hardly the first or last time he'd find himself half-way through a half-baked plan where the plane took a metaphorical nose dive until he found the manual and corrected it.

Any normal person would of been nervous, terrified, riddled with anxiety and paranoia. Given the circumstances, all those emotions would be perfectly justified and valid to the bone. After all one didn't simply up and move his entire life, drain 96% of their savings and smuggle probably the biggest shipment of Vibranium ever attempted and not expect to feel something, right? Right. If Aleks felt if anything, the small pinch of guilt that he was susceptible to feeling every now and again. Not for himself, for the Wakandan's and friends he'd left behind and ultimately betrayed. Overshadowed, greatly, by the calm expression and complacent smile occupying his lips. On the outside to strangers, Aleksandr was just another businessman travelling in a black car on his daily commute. Seen but unseen.
Grey eyes taking in the tall buildings and busied streets of New York as the car he rode in navigated the far too congested roads, a favor called in from a friend to help him get where he needed to go. It didn't hold his interest for more than a few minutes at a time, tipping his fedora over his eyes and turning his attention to his phone instead; pulling up a screen to double check he had the right details and to make sure his shipment was where it was suppose to be, if anything happened to that, well, he would be royally screewed. Pocketing it after a moment or two of just staring at the screen and his smile broke out into a grin.
23 long years, from the last time they had properly spent time around one another, it was the kind of time and distance which made little to no difference to him. When time was a friend you got along with, agelessly, years at the time seemed to drag - now appeared like days, going through the various conversations and scenario's the two had wound up in. It helped bear the car ride.
Finally, the car rolled to a stop, and Alek slid out with no more than a few words exchanged between the driver. Straightening and smoothing out his blazer before he made his way to the trunk, pulling out the two cases inside, the second the trunk clicked shut, the car moved away from him. Letting out a breath, it was all in motion now. No going back, and he liked it, in fact the thought had him grinning to himself. It wasn't long before the New York glamour was replaced with the door to Ivan's home, setting the cases all too carefully and precisely at his feet. This was it. Graft inlaid hand knocking the door, ears trained for the faintest sound. And boy, in that moment he hoped that when Ivan heard the entire story he was going to get exactly the same look he always got, Aleks could use that right now.
"There's an awful lot of you there, last time I saw this many people- that's not important. Some faces I know of, not personally I mean - Wakanda left socializing to take a long walk off a short cliff. Honor to meet you all, truly."
"And then, let's go to the faces I don't know, or at least know I shouldn't be really talking too. But y'know, what's life without a little adventure."
"Aleksandr Tessier, bio-engineer at your service."
"Names Aleks, kid. Mind the boxes and please, do not touch the black cases. I don't want to clean up and you don't want to get what's in them on you. What can I help you with?"
snarkyai started following you
"Jarvis...Jarvis. Tony Stark's AI right? Hows it going, man, it's an honor to meet you."
