“False Equivalence” from David Willis’ “Shortpacked!” web comic.

I know a lot of us are psyched about Agent Carter for many reasons (badass female lead tops the list) and how she’s both using and deconstructing typical female gender roles.

But let’s not forget about Jarvis. The Male butler. Butlering is a typically male profession, but lets look at most of his onscreen actions. He’s the stay-at-home half of a married couple, he cooks, cleans, worries about the lead character, stitches up the lead character, and gives helpful emotional advice to the lead character: all actions that are typically found in the female sidekick.

But Jarvis doesn’t seem too concerned about this role reversal. In this Man’s Man world (clearly seen in Peggy’s office) Jarvis could be easily seen as a sissy or unmasculine. But he’s not. He’s just as willing as Peggy to go out on a dangerous limb to save the world–his skills are just different from her.

I would say that the writer’s characterization of Jarvis is just as important as Peggy’s when it comes to supporting feminism and deconstructing typical gender roles–not just in a film setting, but in real life as well.

(Is it just me, or does Tom the actor tend to impel women to kiss him first? I can’t find the exact words, it just seems like he likes them to come to him. Like he’s all for it, but wants her to plant the kiss.)
