I know there's a lot of discussion on Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday ( ex: it's performative and doesn't do shit to advance Black Americans) and while I do understand what folks are saying, I also think it's important to read the story of 95 yr old Opal Lee who spent decades fighting to get it recognized nationally.

Personally, I'm happy it's a federal holiday but also understand it's gonna be weaponized, mistold, and commercialized. I also understand that it doesn't equal the voting rights bill, police reform, reparations, etc.

I do think it's important to have a day that allows Black Americans to celebrate our culture, history, and ancestors; even tho for others, it will, unfortunately, just be seen as another day off.

Multiple truths can exist.

yet again, the government has proven that they don’t care about us. as a kentucky citizen, seeing these articles and knowing that my state has been one of many seeking harsh bans against abortion has left me speechless. abortion isn’t just a backup plan for one night stands, or a safe haven for teenagers. it is a medical procedure, and is often needed to prevent the loss of the woman’s life. with these new laws, women will be forced to continue with their pregnancies, regardless of whether they were raped, or their children will be products of invest, or even if the child is to be born dead.

these laws don’t just affect women, it affects everyone. overpopulation will only worsen, and when that happens, the strain on our resources will leave millions starving, including the children you’re trying to “save.” of course, the government won’t be affected by this, since they have enough money to avoid the damage. no, it’s the everyday citizens, people like you and me, who will suffer because of a decision that wasn’t ours. why do we continue to let these people, these men, make decisions on our behalf when they won’t listen to us? why are we letting men control women’s bodies? america, which prides itself on being free and safe for everyone, has repeatedly shown that it doesn’t care about the great majority of its citizens: women, african americans, the lgbtq community, the disabled. america is breaking its promise of freedom, and it doesn’t even care.

how long will we let this happen before something is done? how many more injustices will carry through before people wake up? this isn’t just discrimination, it’s the suspension of fundamental rights at the hand of people who’ve never needed the right. while you’re at it, ban vasectomies, since the goal is saving children. oh, but that won’t happen, because it’s different for men. this is insanity, and i can safely say that right now, i am extremely disappointed and angry with my country. enough is enough.
