a/n: sorry it took a while, anon! i haven't been able to write since i'm drowning in schoolwork. still, i very much enjoyed writing this piece!
It had been eight long years since you last saw Nami.
You refused to.
Whenever she would have the audacity to be the one to collect the monthly tribute of Coco Village, you would remain in your hut – watching as her eyes scanned the scowling crowd, as if searching for a welcoming face in the sea of despising looks that greeted her arrival.
She would leave with the tribute under her arm and her head hung as she walked out of the village.
You could hear mutters of the villagers, not even bothering to wait until the redhead was out of earshot before they started talking about the nerve she had to show up here.
Still, the utters didn't cause Nami to falter. It stopped working on her long ago.
Before she joined the Arlong Pirates, you, Nami, and Nojiko had been peas in a pod. You may as well have been Bellemere's third daughter, with how much you hung out with the sisters.
They had both been great influences in your life up to that point, so imagine your surprise when Nami decided to join her foster mother's killers and village captors without explanation or hesitation.
Even then, at the start of it all, you didn't bid her goodbye in the form of a flare with enough venom in your eyes to kill a herd of elephants, just as the village had when she left with the Arlong Pirates.
Still, you couldn't ever admit that you hated her, despite what she did. You couldn't ever admit to anyone else either why that was the case.
The truth was that you never found yourself viewing Nami as a sister. Sure, considering you were youngest between the three of you, you considered her your role model, but not as a sister.
Your feelings confused you.
Most especially when her band of pirates went and defeated Arlong, revealing in the process that Nami had been working to buy your town back for the past eight years.
That was when you first faced her again – as she returned to the village with her friends.
Her eyes went wide as saucers as she called your name and your heart dropped to join the butterflies in your stomach.
You stood mere steps away from each other, both not knowing what to do.
Nami couldn't read you from the expression you gave her. Figuring that you still resented her, her eyes fell to the ground.
Then she felt your embrace again for the first time in eight years. That same warm embrace you used to give that would instantly drive away her sorrow and her tears.
"Nami, I'm sorry." You replaced her sorrow with relief, but now it was you who cried against her shirt.
Nami chuckled as tears threatened to fall from her eyes. "What are you sorry for, silly?"
"I jus – I coul – I couldn't face you for eight years and – " You stammered endlessly through sobs, not even caring that the whole village was seeing you be as vulnerable as you always were with Nami.
"I couldn't even hate you but I also couldn't like you and I just – "
Everything was silent for a moment. Then she called your name, and you lifted your head to finally look at her.
She couldn't help but chuckle as she wiped at your damp cheeks.
"It's over now," she reminded. "You're okay. You're free."
"We're free."
Silence fell once again, only for it to be quickly broken.
"Nami, look!" The one who had beaten Arlong boomed, sitting in front of Genzo who sat on a tree trunk. "I had pops do the chopsticks-nose thing!"
Genzo faced them while Luffy chuckled with his whole chest, the General looking puzzled as if he didn't know how a pair of chopsticks ended up comically stuck up his nostrils.
"Luffy!" Nami's eyes widened as she started walking towards them to scold the rubber man.
It was your turn to be bewildered when a blonde man in a suit and a cigarette between his lips approached you suddenly, a green-haired man and a boy with a long nose only a few steps behind him.
He took the cigarette from his lips and took yout hand in his free hand to bring it to his lips.
"Good day, mademoiselle, it seems I failed to be graced by your beauty when we – "
"Why did Luffy have to pick the most gallant, idiot cook to join?" The green-haired man had started talking in the middle of Sanji's statements.
" – first set foot in this village. I don't believe we've met, you can call me Sanji – shut it, Moss Head," Sanji spat in retaliation.
"Hey, don't go starting another fight again or I might have to round the pair of you up myself," the boy with the bandana around his head declared as he stepped between the cook and the swordsman.
Still, the pair only actually stopped glaring at each other when Nami had returned with her own scolding gaze. "Guys, stop it."
Nami joined your side again, the straw hat no longer on her head. "Sorry, Luffy was messing with Genzo."
She placed a hand on your shoulder as she faced the crew. "Guys, this is my…"
You introduced yourself, glancing at Nami who still seemed hesitant. "I'm Nami's friend."
You looked at her with a reassuring smile which wiped away her anxiour look.
"This is Sanji, as you already know, the Moss Head is Zoro – "
Zoro closed his eyes and shook his head. "Don't start."
Nami ignored him. "This is Usopp, and the idiot who beat Arlong is Luffy, their captain."
Nami then looked at the crew with a look as if she had said something wrong. "Our captain."
You looked at her. ""Our?""
She looked at you for a few seconds as if calculating her next words. She hummed in affirmation, though the noise came out sounding anxious. "I'm coming with them."
"But…you just got back." You forced a chuckle. It had to be some prank, right?
The Straw Hats quickly read the tension and slowly departed from their earshot. Nojiko ushered the other villagers as well, ignoring complaints from the Straw Hat Captain she had ushered along.
"You can't leave, our village's been saved. You can live here again, live with me…" You realized what you said last minute and your voice faded.
"And Nojiko, and Genzo, and everyone else," you quickly added. "You don't have to leave."
"I do," she insisted.
"Why?"
She exhaled sharply, as if she had to force herself to say it – "Because I have a new dream, now that the village has been freed."
You waited for her to continue. You expected her to, refusing not to get closure again before she left you again.
"I want to draw a map of the world. Not for anyone else this time, but for myself. I can't accomplish that by staying here."
You knew she was right. You know you were in no position to keep her from achieving her dream, and you know you couldn't prevent her from leaving – even if you…
"You can't go, I – " you stopped.
Now it was her turn to wait for you to continue.
You closed your eyes and shook your head. "Nevermind, just…go."
You turned on your heels and began to leave her.
"No."
You stopped in your tracks.
"Don't let it end like this again. Please." You heard her voice break, and you tried not to let it affect you, but you knew you couldn't prevent it.
You opened your mouth to speak, your back still facing her, though it took you a while to actually speak.
"I love you."
"I love you, too." It took too fast for her to reply. It was obvious she hadn't realized what you meant.
You shook your head again and turned to face her. "No, Nami, I'm in love with you."
You couldn't tell when you figured out what it was that you felt for her. Maybe you always knew. Maybe you just figured it out when she was about to leave you for the second time.
You had never heard silence quite this loud. It was almost painful how she said nothing back for the longest time – so painful that you almost wish you hadn't seen her before she left you again.
"I love you, too," she only repeated what she had said the first time. You knew it didn't hold the same meaning this time – she loved you, too.
No other words were exchanged afterwards. You turned on your heels again and began walking back home.

The Straw Hats resided in the village for a few days before they readied themselves to set sail again. It gave you time to make up for what you lost with Nami.
You and Nami sat on the bench by Bellemere's grave on her last day before she departed.
She had gotten her Arlong tattoo removed and replaced it with a windmill and tangerine tattoo as a tribute and a remembrance of her hometown as she travelled the seas.
You traced the new tattoo with your fingers, looking at the tattoo with fascination.
Nami looked at you, feeling your golden ray touch on her arm as you took in the details of her tattoo.
"Can't you come with me?" Nami offered.
You stared blankly at her for a few seconds. Then, you shook your head.
"I don't want to become a sailor, much less a pirate."
Nami laughed. "Do you still get seasick by the shore?"
"It's not something you grow out of." You shared her laughter as she leaned into you, fixing your hair.
You stared deep into each other's eyes as your laughter died down, a frown now on Nami's lips. "I don't want to leave you."
You didn't want her to, either, but you couldn't say that. You had to let her reach for her dream without feeling guilty for leaving you.
You lifted your hands to her face and pinched her cheeks into a smile, until it turned into a genuine one. "I'll wait."
You smiled back at her.
Her hand fell to your chin as she lifted it to connect your lips together. Sparks flew as you kissed – as you said goodbye and locked in your promise to one day meet again.
You soon parted with a smile on both of your lips. "Go."
"You're not even gonna show me out?" She teased.
"Unless you want to leave with sick all over your pretty new dress, pretty girl, it's recommended that I don't," you retorted.
She chuckled. "I'll miss you." She threw her arms around you for one last embrace.
