2 — The boys pushing the cart are "Newsies", young boys who sell newspapers. They and the horse carriage are avoiding a collision it seems!
I like the generations of transportation shown here; the horse carts, the parked cars and the electric tram. Not long until all horses would be unemployed..
3 — Interesting corner! On top an ad for the Yellow streetcars. Bottom there's a cigar shop, and in the middle an optician (you can get your eyes examined for free!). I can't help but think that the eyes in the shop window probably would wake fear in children.. didn't you have one when you were small, too?
4 — A lonesome worker is bent over his desk hard at work in Erie County Savings Bank (which was torn down in 1963 to give place to Main Place Mall/Tower.
The window above his office is cracked open. What would the "buzz" of the city sound like? Rather than the overwhelming sound of traffic we have today it would be the far off sounds of people talking and perhaps calling out, occasional car driving by, and a LOT of horses snorting, neighing and the clopping of their feet on the pavement..
5 — Monument: Far off you can see Buffalo's memorial to President William McKinley, who was assassinated while attending the Pan-American Exposition in 1901.
Beyond you can hint yet another street, filled with people. The detail in these old photographs are incredible!
Colorization: Klamath Indian chief praying to the spirits at Crater Lake, Oregon, 1923. Photograph by Edward S. Curtis. Crater lake is a caldera lake; a cauldron-like volcanic feature usually formed by the collapse of land following a volcanic eruption. The island in the middle is called Wizard island. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crater_Lake
