It’s not tumblr. It’s the owner of the photos that have TECHNICALLY been stolen. Those accounts have violated tumblr TOS and…. the law.

It’s backgrid doing this, and they put the photos up on their site. If you give them credit, I don’t think they bother you.

You can tell if a candid is from them, if at bottom left hand corner it says “backgrid”.

Most people seem to edit that out though before posting candids. So…. That’s the part that is breaking the law and TOS.

No, giving credit is not enough. The simple act of taking and reposting is what’s illegal. That isn’t mitigated by a link back. 

It’s the same, by the way, for every photo you post that you didn’t take yourself. Simply giving credit isn’t enough. You should ask permission from the copyright holder and respect their response. Otherwise you risk this result.

Fair use arguments may apply to the reposting of images, though most arguments would come down to damages (did the person reposting financially gain from reposting? Did they act as an agent for someone who did repost?). For example, tumblr might be deleting blogs because tumblr is technically profiting off of reposted images, and may be liable as a principal or vicariously liable. It’s really not that simple and the reposting of images doesn’t necessarily carry a moral component.

Yeah, and you can also get tired of criticizing something you love. You can get completely fed up with it and decide, “You know what? Flaws aside, I love this thing, and I don’t have to waste hours of my life admitting its flaws to strangers on the Internet in order to somehow justify my love of it.” You can get sick of watching others gleefully tear it apart, for no reason other than that it’s popular and they hate that you love it. You can get sick of watching others tearing it apart with good intentions, too.

In the end, it’s just a cartoon, or a book, or a movie. It’s not that serious, and you can enjoy it without hyper-focusing on its flaws. You don’t need to justify your love of something to someone else, least of all a person you don’t even know.

You were wondering about ethnic tinhats before. To my knowledge, both members of the Camren ship are mixed race (but that might need confirmation). Does Swan Queen have tinhats who ship the actresses? If so, one of them is half-Latina. It's definitely always when both parties are white passing, that's for sure. (J-pop and K-pop have ravenous tinhatters, but I'm not counting that as involving Asians because.... virtually everyone in Japan and Korea is Asian.)

Yeah, the white passing thing seems to be really important. 

It’s hard to even say “Would this tinhat ship be as popular if the people involved were visibly ethnic or darker than they are?” because I’m struggling to think of a tinhat ship outside of Ziam where that’s happened.

For me it’s interesting ‘cause you’d think listening to tinhats that only white celebrities exist in the closet and need to be freed by their fans. If tinhats are right, why aren’t they concerned about minorities too? Why aren’t minorities sending signs with their ankles and tee shirts and instagram follows too? Why is this something that only ever happens with white passing people?

The reason depression is literally the worst is not because of the soul-crushing sadness or the wanting to kill yourself or the self harm or all the violent and extreme emotions that come with dealing with this particular mental handicap. It’s the long and painful stretches of days of weeks of months where you’re not really depressed, but you kind of just exist. The time you spend sitting in bed aimlessly browsing the Internet instead of finishing that video game you thought was fun or going out with a friend to see a movie or getting up and doing your laundry. You exist, and it’s okay, but you’re not really sure why. You’re not doing anything productive when you have all the time in the world to be doing it. You feel like you’re missing out on life, but at the same time you feel that it doesn’t really matter. That’s the worst kind of depression.
