Antônia Santos was born to celebrity-status privilege. There was nothing on earth she couldn’t have. Designer handbags, boys. This illusion of unlimited grandeur and wealth remained perfectly intact until she realized what she really wanted; a father who isn’t made of false promises but reliable actions, and a mother who would notice the cracks in her daughter’s carefully crafted facade rather than worry about how many pieces of bacon she had for breakfast. It was a haunting wakeup to realize how imperfect her “perfect” family actually was.
At sixteen, Antônia officially removed her designer sunglasses so she could see through the tinted lies her parents staged all around her. Her father was a serial cheating criminal who was using his hotel business to sleep with beautiful women. Perhaps he thought he was spiting his wife for getting her tubes tied after Antônia was born and he was deprived of having a son. Maybe he was hoping one of these many women would get pregnant and deliver him the heir he always wanted but could never have.
After learning most of her parents poorly-kept secrets, the fight was taken right out of her. The iron-grasp she had on her peers began to loosen and she tossed away her pom-poms, too dejected to cheer. Instead of obsessing over popularity, exclusive clubs and designer clothes, Antônia’s mental anguish took a turn for the worse. She dropped all of her extracurricular activities and developed a mean-streak that could rival her father’s. Her entire school was afraid of her. Staff, included. There wasn’t a person safe from her new obsession of obtaining power and control over everything and everyone she encountered. Antônia stayed on this high up until news broke that her father had been arrested for fraud and embezzlement. Then little by little she began losing everything; until the only reminder of her previous life was the pearls around her delicate neck.
Antônia knew it was time to grow up and show her mother what she was truly capable of. They could make it out of this together — as a team. She even got a job and started a savings account. However when guys in suits began showing up at their doorstep asking questions, Antônia’s mother disappeared into the night, leaving her daughter to fend for herself. With her father’s empire crumbling down all around her, Antônia found herself fighting tooth and nail to make it out alive. She even sold her favorite pearl necklace to make ends meet.
She thought everything was over until that same necklace reappeared at her doorstep with a note signed from her estranged uncle.
The world is your oyster, sobrina. It’s up to you to find the pearls - Uncle Danny.
If there’s one thing she knows about her uncle it’s that he was forbidden from ever entering their home. She’s never even met him. But according to her father, he was considered dangerous. And maybe that’s why on the corner of one pearl was a smudge of blood…
