If things are placed in there proper perspective it’s easy to see the shaping factors for hand dominance has very little to do with genetic inheritance. It’s more a case of various cultural adaptations overriding our biology. The human brain and body are both symmetrical but their relationship is contralateral. This means the left side of the brain controls the right side of the human body and the right side controls the left. The brain creates pathways (neuromuscular patterns) throughout the body, largely based on habits we establish early during development during childhood. Many people in modern culture end up right handed because the left hemisphere is largly linked to the way we learn. Every person I have trained claims to have a “good” and “bad” side when it comes to movement. Differences in the sizes of bilateral muscles are usually the direct result use. Unless you were born with an anatomical defect or encountered a situation in life that altered you physically you are a bilateral organism that moves contralaterally. What you do on one side you can and should practice on the other. Our bodies are designed to work synergistically to achieve equalibrium in every actions from standing to running and jumping. For years, most of the exercises I used to strengnthen my body took place in the sagittal plane. Pull-ups, push-ups, dips and squats are all great exercises. However, perfoming these exercises and others in the sagittal plane can cause malalignments which lead to injury during standard movement patterns, such as moving through the gait cycle (walking). The chances of injury increase when a body trained mostly in the sagittal plane is subject to more dynamic activites such as sports. The body is never doing the same thing on both sides at the same time. Therefore, it is counterintuitive to continues using training programs dominated by sagittal plane exercises. Rotate.
