But once you become a teenager, a sense of longing strikes: a loss of the childhood you had, or perhaps you’re faced with the fact that you never even had one to begin with, and now it’s gone. It’s watching the biggest moments of your life fade into memories, while more and more struggles and expectations keep piling onto your plate. It’s accepting the changes. Your body keeps growing; puberty strikes, leaving only a sparkle of a time when innocence once was.

You look through lenses, watching time pass you by, unable to stop it. You try to grasp at pieces that fall out one after the other, your birthday keeps coming up every year, and each time you try to smile, wondering if the next one will be the same. It’s a constant reminder of what once belonged to you, what used to fit perfectly into place. A time of innocence when nothing mattered other than smiling. Now you stare at the pile before you: work has laid claim to you, family expectations weigh on your shoulders, and you stare at your kids, remembering that years ago, you were the exact same. A piece of you, sacred and innocent, is staring back at you. You can’t help but wonder if time will change this child as much as it changed you.
