After Drew’s video on online gambling, I knew he was gonna start pumping out more bangers, and this is definitely living up to expectations.

My biggest take away from Dan and Phil’s new video
Dan and Phil coming out as a couple was definitely exciting, but what got me the most about their video is the way they talked about how hard it was and still is to be out as a couple.
I think a lot of queer people have forgotten how hard it is for a lot of queer people to be out, and be out with someone. Many queer people talk about how they set boundaries in their dating lives that anyone they date must be out to their family, friends, and everyone in their lives. Many queer people feel like they have to go back into the closet if they have to keep their relationship a secret in some spaces.
This boundary is more than valid, and it’s more than fair. Why would anyone WANT to be in a relationship with someone who hides them?
My problem is not with the boundary itself, but the social stigma that has come from it. I feel it has become less of a topic of personal boundaries, and more of a “holier than thou” topic. As if queer people have a moral obligation to be out to everyone, all the time, in order to be accepted by modern queer society.
Seeing two queer people talk openly about their fears of coming out as a couple, while maintaining a strong and healthy relationship, is very encouraging. They existed in their relationship almost exclusively to themselves for so long, and they were okay with it because they wanted to be together despite the hiding.
This is by far not an ideal situation. But this story is more common today than I think most people realize. It’s good to feel seen and understood in this way, and I hope their story can help more people understand that not being out doesn’t mean someone isn’t queer enough or good enough.
