rewatching stranger things and still being mad at what they did to mike's character
my boy u deserve so much better
my problem is I can't listen to ultraviolence without thinking of vol1 byler anymore
i just heard the stranger things intro music and got so upset i had to click off insta
one of the biggest missteps in the last season of Stranger Things, in my opinion, was the Holly storyline.
and look, this is not me hating Holly. not at all. when I heard she was getting a bigger role, I was actually excited. I thought we were finally going to get something deeper with the Wheeler family. Mike, Nancy, even Karen… like there was so much potential there that’s always been sitting in the background collecting dust.
but instead… it turned into something else entirely.
because I really struggle to understand why we suddenly needed to shift so much focus onto new or expanded characters when the show literally said there wouldn’t be new major additions. and yet here we are: Holly, Derek, Dr. K, Kali coming back, a whole rotation of new kids (like actually who the fuck are they) … like what exactly are we calling “no new characters” at this point?
and that’s the frustrating part. because the issue isn’t the actors. Nell Fisher, who plays Holly, is genuinely amazing. she has so much potential and she did really well with what she was given.
but the storyline itself? in my opinion, it didn’t just “pull attention away” from the og main characters… it basically grabbed the camera, spun it around, and went “actually, we’re doing this now because, you know, Netflix needs money”
instead of building on the main cast—Will, Mike, Eleven, Hopper, Jonathan, Lucas—we got sidelined into new threads that didn’t feel necessary, while the OG characters were left kind of… flat. not flat like the earth (we’re not doing that today), but flat like a cardboard cutout.
Will’s trauma? barely touched. and when it was, it felt like it opened doors and then immediately closed them again. Like, LET ME IN DUFFERS, WHY IS THIS FANDOM A PRISON?!?
Jonathan? sidelined.
Lucas? reduced mostly to Max’s boyfriend storyline.
Hopper? stuck in plotlines that went nowhere or didn’t pay off. like, he is Hypervigilant since s3.
and meanwhile we’re being introduced to new arcs that take up space but don’t really answer the questions the show itself has been building for seasons. It’s been years!
because that’s the other thing: there were so many unanswered questions that were supposedly going to be addressed… and by the end I felt more confused than before.
I went into the finale with my own mental map of the story, like I had already pieced together the world and its answers based on what the show had been building (and what i prefer🤫)
and then I finished it and just sat there thinking:
maybe I should’ve written the finale because what was that.
the idea, the vibe, the potential was there. but the execution felt like it kept stepping away from the very characters we’ve been following since the beginning… and in doing so, kind of ruined everything.
I could bet my entire existence on the fact that Netflix had a hand in this, like:
“hmm… the main cast is getting older… we need fresh meat”
and then just lovingly tossing a whole batch of new kids into the plot-absorbing blender and hitting puree.
did anyone else go into pure euphoria when they heard tracks ‘kids, and ‘kids 2, in the beginning of season 5 episode 1 🥹🩷🩷
it was so beautiful and i felt sooo very happy!
is anybody selling that nov 26 - dec 25th vol 1 sorcerer byler cocaine anymore
I don't care. The entire season was shit. Everything was shit and I don't want to hear any praise for it. "b-b-but sorcerer!" Sorcerer was shit too bc it went nowhere. I felt nothing when Will got his powers bc I was already so turned off by the awful dialogue and horrible pacing. Volume one was shit, volume two was shittier, and the finale was the shittiest of them all.
