We’re hesitant to try to designate “in character” and “out of character” as that can mean so many different things to different people, especially with Allison & Renee who are side characters in canon. That said, here are some of my favorite Renison fics, which delve a bit deeper into their struggles and really give us some insight into their characters. Of course it’s when the knife finally doesn’t feel awkward in her hand anymore that Allison shows up.
Instead of the relaxed way she usually holds her wings, they’re pulled taut behind her back. Her arms are crossed in front of her chest and there’s a decidedly not pleased look on her face.
“Hey,” Natalie says, not interrupting the sequence of stabbing moves she’s been practicing. She has no time for the way seeing Allison makes her feel.
Safe – a joke. Not alone – Allison might not even be real. Cared about – impossible.
Those kinds of emotions aren’t meant for someone like her in the first place, and she’s not going to indulge them.

“I’ve missed you,” she says before she’s registered she’s saying it out loud, but it’s true and there’s no reason not to say it, except for the vulnerability it makes her feel. Even though she’s learnt that it can be a good thing, she can’t help but feel surprised every time she comes out of being vulnerable without another scar.
Allison freezes, then puts the shirt she’s holding back down and turns to look at Renee. Her expression, usually easy to read, is too complicated for Renee to figure out.

Far-future fic. Nicky and Erik are finally getting married, which means the Foxes are about to have a mini-reunion in Germany. That'd be great, except that Allison hasn't talked to Renee in nearly a year.
Ready or Not by emmerrr [Rated T, 4913 words, Complete 2018]
Not for the first time, Allison ruminated over whether it was harder to stay or to leave. So often, both seemed such terrifying prospects.
