episode 9
everyone keeps saying that they want to be an episode nine truther, but that they don’t want to get their hopes up, but here’s the thing-
even if there is no episode nine? we’ve cracked a code here. even if there is no follow up, we’ve found the solution for ourselves. all of the signs- johan’s survival of drowning, the “LIVING” writing spelt out by the boots in ep 8, pam & carolyn floating on the water, carolyn being in debt to villanelle for saving her life, the dare, the rebirth symbolism, eve’s “reuniting” speech. it all makes sense. so no matter what happens on sunday, we have created our own ending here, and what’s more, it’s entirely logical- it’s tangible and believable.
regardless of whether JC (jesus christ/jodie comer, interchangeable) is resurrected on sunday, we know in our canon that villanelle faked her own death as her last dare for carolyn. her and eve will reunite, and they’ll live in alaska together as happy gays for the rest of their days. THE END.
HER SMILE SHE’S SO PRECIOUS
i keep seeing comments that the writers et al have made about the reaction from the finale being unfounded, because it’s “just fiction”.
for so many reasons, this is wrong- working in the visual arts, you as writers should be advocates against this rhetoric. art is everything! art is power! art is hope! art is meaningful! you should know this! what passion led you down this path? where is it now?
and television is an extremely forceful art form. it holds cultural power; it can change things. more than this, when handling queer characters, it is your duty and responsibility to at the very least do your research. understand your characters, and understand your audience. there is a history here- and you’re entwined in its future histories as a writer. there is a history of queer erasure- how many queer narratives have been destroyed or hidden throughout time? you need look no further than even another bbc show- gentleman jack- to witness first hand the true to life story of anne lister, who had to write her diary in code because of the queer nature of it. and there is history in queer death- my god, so much history. not just the tropes, such as bury your gays, but the real life history too. all the horror we as a community have faced, from the AIDS crisis to the tragically low life expectancy for our trans siblings, to youth homelessness and suicide rates.
so killing eve, as a show with two queer protagonists, one of them a person of colour, is definitely more than just fiction. we know what is make believe. like, sure, the espionage and the mysteries were fantastical. but at its heart, killing eve was so incredibly human. so intimate and personal.
take eve- she’s on a journey of self discovery, exploring all of her shades- light, dark, rainbow. and take villanelle- she’s constantly searching. for who she really is, for hope, for someone to truly see her.
and aren’t we all exploring our many shades? aren’t we all searching for hope? to be seen? these particularly deep, raw, human hungers are especially pertinent to queer communities.
how many queer youth saw themselves in villanelle’s troubled family life? how many queer youth have just wanted to have their hair stroked and be held like villanelle does? and how many queer adults have felt the pain and desperation eve has felt whilst learning that she’s different? that she needs to create her own normal, because she doesn’t fit in?
that’s why the joy and connection of these two characters is so important. it embodies the sentiment of not being alone. eve found a new normal with villanelle, and she could picture a life of excitement, of thrills, but also of comfort and protection with her. villanelle found acceptance, understanding, and a place to call home- finally- in eve. together, they were possibility for each other.
we, the queer community, need to see possibility. we need to see hope. must i really explain why, when the world around us aches and screams out? must i really explain why, with the don’t say gay bill happening right now? when simply existing as a gay person is still illegal in 69 countries- 40 more than where gay marriage is even legal. when in the UK, conversion therapy is in discussion to be banned- but not for trans people (a ban with exclusions is not a ban). the UK!!!!!!! this is just a smattering of the things we face. a raindrop in the ocean.
so to take hope and crush it is a terrible thing. this is why that finale matters. this is why killing eve as a whole matters. this is why it is more than just fiction.
because the blood, the guts and the gore may not have been real, but the human stories were. because eve and villanelle were real to their queer audience.
because they were mosaics of all of us.
Can we please send this fan's thoughts on the ending to Laura Neal, the writers and BBC? Please let's find a way to because they have grossly misunderstood the entire story.
Codename Villanelle novel series original ending, by Luke Jennings
okay i am baffled! laura neal has stated that the exploration of eve and villanelle sharing domestic moments in episode 8 was to prove how incompatible they are...but those scenes were joyous?
i believe, of course, that this is largely down to performance by sandra and jodie (god bless). maybe it’s because laura is clearly stuck with terrible heteronormative views of what relationships can be, but my god, the domestic episode 8 moments were gentle, they were blissful, they were peaceful. they were honest, they were real, and they were calm. the characters looked more at ease than they had for four entire seasons. plus, what is “domestic bliss” anyway? would it not always have looked a little different for two such multi-faceted, ever-evolving women each on personal journeys? and would that not have been a wonderfully interesting dynamic to explore? would that not have been a great statement for the show to make in its final episode- that there is someone for everyone, that there are spaces on this planet for two neurodivergent women to carve out just for themselves?
furthermore- going on a roadtrip with your girlfriend in a stolen campervan sure doesn’t seem like not being able to coexist to me. agreeing that the coffee flavour revel is the absolute worst as you throw chocolates into each others mouths sure doesn’t seem incompatible to me. bursting out in song together because you are full of childish joy in each others presence sure doesn’t seem like a sullied trajectory to me. nor does being comfortable and at home enough with each other to pee in front of each other, nor does grabbing stolen kisses in front of strangers, nor does relishing in finding out the everyday details about each other that you’ve been so desperate to discover this whole time.
that’s the thing- this whole time, the two of them have been both craving normalcy, and someone on this godforsaken earth to understand them on a deep level. they have both been craving their own kind of normal. because domestic life for villaneve is not normal. of course it’s not. but they could create their own version. and that’s what jodie and sandra gave us in those performances.
against all odds, they threw away the script and delivered a villaneve kind of normal, and it was spectacularly lovely. what laura viewed as impossible, they turned on its head into something real, and tangible. they turned it into a vision of what really could have been for the characters: two women in love, on the run, slowly healing their wounds together.
What was up with the pace in the Killing Eve Finale?
The ending of season three was the perfect springboard for a genuinely satisfying final season, with Villanelle and Eve taking down the 12 together and finding their feet in acting on their romance. However, because for some inane reason V & Es love was thrown under the bus for the entirety of season 4 (how many “break up” scenes did we get??), this final episode felt so fast and rushed and forced. We didn’t even get to enjoy the sweet moments, because we knew each one of them was tinged and tarnished with a hack-handedly foreshadowed death. We didn’t even get to enjoy the sweet moments, because the writers made it obvious that to them, queer love could only be fleeting, momentary, and ultimately “cleansed” away.
Their affection and tender moments contrasted so much with the rest of the season- full of harsh words and painful moments. If they had been allowed the tenderness seen in the final episode throughout all of season 4 instead, the pay off would actually have been so much greater. Hell, we waited three seasons! I think the “cat and mouse” thing had been done enough by this point.
What would have been honestly groundbreaking would have been allowing an entire season of positive WLW relationship representation on screen. Yes, I know it’s Killing Eve- it’s gory, it’s brutal. But the actual source material allowed for a happy ending- it’s ridiculous to tout it as impossible when the original text so blatantly is here in the world, existing. We could have had eyes being gouged out, toes up noses, and machete attacks to bring the gruesome aspects of the show, and still showed two women caring for each other.
We could have seen gentle moments which made sense in each episode, a build up of trust with both physical and emotional intimacy. An upwards arc with the crescendo being their escape together- rest assured, this would have been a much more monumental, high drama ending than what we got. They really could have made history here- they could have done something so rare and precious and beautiful. Instead they made one of the worst rated final episodes of a TV show ever.
It’s just a shame. Three seasons of waiting for Villanelle and Eve to get scenes together as a couple, only to have the pacing, timing, and rhythm be so completely off that their romantic moments were like watching sand tumble away in a sand timer. The couple-y nature of their interactions in the finale would have felt so much more real if they had given us a season of them.
They jumped from what was essentially a series of break ups throughout all of season 4 straight into what felt like a fully discussed relationship- it was disconcerting, jarring, off beat. The conclusion that they need each other could have happened in the first episode of season 4, and then the girlfriend x girlfriend relationship could have developed over the course of the series, offering a much more naturalistic progression in which the sub-plot of The 12 could still have developed alongside them.
Sigh! This is a long post, just a few tiny thoughts of many big ones on this ending.
Side note- this isn’t to say that I don’t cherish those moments as some of the very few instances where we saw Villaneve get to be happy together, nor is it to say that Sandra and Jodie didn’t give absolutely brilliant performances in those tender moments. These incredible leads are what saved the show countless times.
This take is purely one from an analytical standpoint on the writing. Seeing the writers all celebrate and take shots with every angry fan reaction has just made me!!!! Embody the emotion of an exclamation point. It’s just wild. Aside from the writers not understanding the characters at all, or having any sense of responsibility for the impact of their decisions with the show, there are just SO many technical problems with the script. It’s shocking that they can’t see that, even with reviews coming in, IMDB ratings, and so forth.
It’s also interesting to me that they have some very real sort of high ground issues, viewing fans, particularly queer fans as somehow an unintelligent mass whose opinions don’t matter. Fans are artists in themselves- we are illustrators, we are authors, I personally work in the industry myself- and are just as intellectual as them. This has been an issue for decades- ingrained misogyny in particular making female audiences out to be hyper emotional and nothing more; see the way the Twilight fandom was treated, for example. Audience reaction has and always will be important.
even the 'the twelve have gone digital' was stupid they couldn't even maintain the postcards thing yet they would send each other postcard pictures like???? a picture of a postcard??? just send the fucking postcard!!! how is it possible that you ruined even tHat.
yes!!! there were so many bizarre small details changed in season 4 which made no sense. and as someone with a background in prop making, i was so gagged when that font came up on the screen. that fucking digital postcard font was SEGOE SCRIPT. it was a free microsoft word font. why?? it was painfully hideous. what are the assassins now, big ol’ iPad kids?
Kayleigh should have been headwriter. She would never have treated Villaneve this way.
Yeah, they look miserable. They could never live like this.
