it's possible that helena herself painted it to try to cheer helly up! similar to peg painting peggy k's nails in the lexington letter. so that might explain it. my own hc would be that it's a personal/maybe slightly irrational thing she wanted to do for helly and she didn't want to garner attention by booking a manicure (maybe there's no way for her to do this because she's monitored all the time?). though it makes me laugh that she thought helly would like this muted ass nail colour if she really wanted to cheer helly up she shoulda painted it BLACK
