Effy looked at her Lanvin dress, running her fingers through the flowers on the red dress. Spring Fling had just been this weekend, and it already felt like a distant memory. So much had happened since Friday, this was the first moment since Friday she felt that she had gotten a moment to herself.
Now that she had gone, she knew that she would have responsibilities, such as making sure Rosewood had events just as amazing as it had had this year and that thought in itself made her want to freak out. She would be taking over from three girls who knew how to throw great parties. It was like going to a talent show and going on after Beyonce. She was going to have to find her own flawless group to help her at least come close to the standard that those girls have made. Effy looked down at the binders that she had gotten from Nicolette, knowing that wasn’t even all of them. But her worries didn’t take away from the happiness that she had felt all weekend. She had won because people liked her, she still couldn’t wrap her mind around that notion. But here she was, Spring Fling Queen and she was going to make sure no one regretted it.
Effy looked up at the crown that she had won, remembering how many pictures she had been forced to pose for with it on. Whether it was for her father, who basically treated this win as if she had won the Superbowl. He had introduced her to everyone at his art gallery and even at the supermarket and the gas station as the Spring Fling Queen. Or it was Mrs. Hawkins who was a daily reminder of that wise lesson of don’t judge a book by it’s cover, because on first glance she seemed beyond intimidating but speak to her for a minute and she was as kind as Soren. Or it was students activity committee needing pictures for the schools tumblr. Her face still hurt from all the smiling she’d done. As she looked over at her desk, Effy noticed something odd.
It was a velvet jewelry box and a note. A note that once she picked it up read ‘Mom’. Just reading that made the smile that was on her face fade. She knew she should have even entertained her mother by opening the note but Effy being the girl that she is couldn’t stop herself from just hearing-or in this case, reading her out.
‘Effy, I know it’s been a while since we have spoken, and for that I apologize. I know that what has transpired hasn’t been easy on you and I never wanted that for you. You are my daughter and you know that I’ll always love you. That’s why Hugh and I are looking at houses in Rosewood, it’s so we can be closer to you and be in your life. As Mia and I were looking for classes for her to take next year at Rosewood Academy, I noticed that you had won Spring Fling Queen, congratulations. I knew that I had to give you something to celebrate your win and that’s what’s in the box. Just remember that I love you, and tell your father, I send my best. xx Mom.’
Effy felt a small smile make it’s way onto her face, not because she was happy to hear from her mother but because she just wouldn’t give up. Effy didn’t want to be a part of her new family. She didn’t care for Hugh and his ability to make everyone around him feel less worthy. In another world, Mia and her would have probably been friends given the fact that she was actually one of the coolest girls she knew but due to the circumstance, she didn’t care to hang out with the girl. She was perfectly fine with her father and her. It was the only family she needed. But now she would have to deal with her mother and Hugh. Just because she couldn’t sense her father and her were happy.
Effy opened the box, just to see whatever lame necklace she had gotten for her but when she noticed the necklace, she gasped. It was lame at all. It was her grandmothers rose necklace. Effy’s grandmother had died when she was eight years old and that was a huge blow for her since she had adored her grandmother, she was everything that Effy had wanted to be. Effy picked it up, the diamonds gleaming up at her. She couldn’t believe that it was. But then she remembered that this was being given to her to easy up the blow of having her mother actually move to Rosewood. This was just a piece of her game.
So Effy ripped up the card, letting out her frustrations with every rip of the note and then placed the necklace back in the box. She made her way down the steps to the living room where her father was idly watching television. She placed it on the coffee table with a thud.
"Send it back to her." Effy said, coldly. It wasn’t a tone that she used often, she could even see the look of surprise in her fathers face when he looked up at her.
"Ef, it’s your grandmother’s neck-" He tried to reason with her, but Effy shook her head, she didn’t want it. Not under these circumstances.
"I don’t want it." She said and he sighed, nodding his head. He grabbed the box and Effy turned around to go back to her room, trying her best to keep on a strong facade despite the fact that she wanted that necklace. But now it was tainted.
Just like everything else regarding to her mother.
