TED Talk5 tittle: What is the new technology for helping Alaskan children with hearing loss?
Susan Emmett, the presenter of the Ted talks program. she said, it was difficult for Alaskans to carry out their main activities such as fishing, deer hunting, berry harvesting and other activities important to Alaskans. As hearing loss in Alaska is not just limited to rural areas, it extends to all urban areas. Where she said in his speech "The Global Burden of Disease Project estimates there are 1.1 billion people living with hearing loss worldwide. That's more people than the entire population here in sub-Saharan Africa.”
Then she mentioned the story of a three-year-old boy he treated in Alaska his name was Anuk. As she said among his words Ear infections started when he was barely four months old. “Whereas his parents brought him to the clinic because he could not hear well. Whereas, if he is not treated at the earliest opportunity, it will be difficult for him to communicate with others and he will suffer from social isolation. If people with hearing loss are treated quickly, their lifestyle will improve after that.
After that, the presenter of the program began to introduce himself, saying "I'm an ear surgeon working with partners around the world on new pathways for hearing loss prevention. This solution comes from my collaboration with a tribal health organization called the Norton Sound Health Corporation." And from what she mentioned in his speech that the process of evaluating the hearing is a very complex process. It requires a lot of equipment. She began by examining Anuk first in a soundproof room under a microscope and then decided on his treatment plan. The tools needed to assess hearing are not available in areas that are far from health centers where many costs are required to reach the habits that assess hearing. Then the city of Alaska ran the Village Clinics with a group of specialists who triaged out health problems.
Doctors in Alaska developed a project aimed at examining patients with hearing loss in cooperation with a medical institute. They integrate medicine with mobile screening technology. As she mentioned in some of his speech, describing this new technology, saying " we are merging telemedicine with mobile screening technology that extends the reach of expert triage beyond health care settings. This cell-based screen, developed in South Africa, costs over 10 times less than traditional equipment and does not require advanced training.”
She used this method for treating Anuk in the school, where he examined Anuk's ears through earphones and used a telephone adapter instead of a microscope, and within minutes the examination was done and pictures were taken, then the Alaska telemedicine technique was applied.
As this new technology will lead to more care for children and reduce cost and time. As it is necessary for the world to develop hearing correction techniques in the world.
