I recently came across papers with my grandmother’s birth dad’s name on it. She was adopted at age 1.5 and her unmarried mom also had another daughter by the same man, that daughter was put in foster care. When I googled the name of my grandmother’s biological father, the only thing that came up was a listing for a grave. He was buried next to his wife, I don’t know what I was expecting, but not that.
Virtual Russian monuments - Google Street View - Russia
Episode 2
A motionless trip in Russia.
I love that I've personally been to and seen the last of these monuments (the one that says Birobidzhan)
“When times were good and there was money to spread around, these were the towns that proved Marx wrong, that managed to increase the proletariat and simultaneously, by calling it middle class, to co-opt it. Such towns were organized around the sedative idealization of team sports, which were believed to develop “good citizens,” and therefore tended to the idealization of adolescent males. During the good years, the years for which places like Lakewood or Canoga Park or El Segundo or Pico Rivera existed, the preferred resident was in fact an adolescent or post-adolescent male, ideally one already married and mortgaged, in harness to the plant, a good worker, a steady consumer, a team player, someone who played ball, a good citizen.” Reading Joan Didion on Super Bowl Sunday...

Reading M Train: Patti Smith writes that she's not interested in symbolism in books then a few pages later there's William S Burroughs who "enjoyed a little target practice and was still a great shot".
Back when "crossdressing" was a crime. From the amazing @h_e_r_s_t_o_r_y Instagram account.
Deep, almost geological changes had to occur; in my case, the habits of a lifetime’s solitude, and a sort of implicit selfishness and self-absorption, had to change. New needs, new fears, enter one’s life—the need for another, the fear of abandonment. There have to be deep, mutual adaptations.
Oliver Sacks made me cry when I read about his falling in love at age 77 in On the Move
A quarter-century ago, Buzz Bissinger wrote about the big-time stakes of small-town high school football in Friday Night Lights. Now he talks about the impact the book had on the players and himself.
Twenty minutes in this interview goes off the rails in the best possible way when Buzz Bissinger starts to talk about his cross-dressing, his leather fetish and his predilection for BDSM. Between the lines it’s fairly apparent that all that used to be tangled up in a whole mess of problematic behaviors and lies. It’s beautiful to me that he’s now comfortable wearing women’s boots on a daily basis but understands that the deceit and the shame was problematic. That he can separate that. People live entire lives without being able to make that distinction.
I want to be Messy
(interview with Montana Ray for TCJWW)
“A gun and a woman together is a violent situation, but it is also a sexualized situation. This book was [...] a process of working out what's cultural versus personal in terms of conditioning that relationship.
I was trying to figure out if the terms of my intimate relationship(s) and my personal fantasies and my picture of self are unique to me, or inevitable given the way that the language of violence and the language of romance, or sex, are spoken.“

A hero
The City by the Bay
Last winter two bodies were found in Norway and the Netherlands. They were wearing identical wetsuits. The police in three countries were involved in the case, but never managed to identify them. This is the story of who they were.
As the grandchild of someone who attempted to cross the English Channel "illegally" in an open boat 75 years ago, this strikes a chord. I don't want to ever forget that just because Fortress Europe now (provisionally?) includes me, it still excludes and kills many many other humans who are different only by virtue of what papers they happen to hold.
