I find this book endlessly inspiring and comforting. I experience Patti Smith's candour about her creative life as an open-hearted invitation to more fully step into my own.
I think reading just kids first makes all of Patti’s other work so much more heartbreaking. Just kids shows them at the start of their lives, full of inspiration, ideas and youthful energy. But her later work like M train and year of the monkey show them nearing the end of them, full of memories and nostalgia. These people that you’re introduced too as young-up-and-coming artists now older and wiser, and to hear about their, sometimes up to 40 year friendships, is so touching. It hits hard when you’re told about their last days on earth, while impossible to truly know what it’s like to lose a friend of that long, just knowing their life as a twenty something year old adds depth to these representations of people. I wish I could erase these books just so I could pick them up and read them again, they mean the world to me.
won a free copy of Patti Smith's new memoir from Goodreads and tbh I'm super pumped for it because I was also gifted M Train and thought I would be underwhelmed by her writing about being super rich and flying around the world just to stay in hotel rooms in different countries while attempting to write an epic poem that she eventually trashed but it ended up moving me deeply so I'm obviously an insufferable stan at this point
