AZURE RAY, "As Above So Below" One Sheet

When they were setting out to write their new six-song recording,As Above So Below, Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor of Azure Ray were intent to depart from their original sound; that lushly haunted, dreamy folk pop that was born twelve years ago with their self-titled debut. The duo, who met and began playing music together at fifteen years old in Birmingham, revived the band in 2010 after a seven-year hiatus to release the full-length Drawing Down the Moon. “For Drawing Down, we focused on revisiting the very first Azure Ray record.” explains Taylor. “For As Above So Below, we wanted it to be more like Azure Ray in an alternate universe.”

Certainly the themes of alternative universes, Mother Nature, beginnings, endings, and re-birth surface in the songs. There is wisdom in the record, an understanding of the patterns of the Universe and a sense of magic -- and a coming to terms with our powerlessness to the wills of nature and cycles of love. “It was hard not to think of those things,” laughs Fink, “Maria was eight months pregnant during recording!”

Sonically As Above is a sparser, more minimal and more electronic experience than past albums. “We looked for inspiration from James Blake, Nicolas Jaar, and Apparat in keeping the music minimal and modern but still working as a textural and emotional extension of the lyrics.” Conveniently, Fink is married to Todd Fink of the celebrated electronica band The Faint, so they didn’t have to look far for a guide into digital territory. “We enlisted my husband and Andy LeMaster (Bright Eyes, Now It's Overhead) as our dream team,” says Fink.  The Omaha-based Finks then packed up for Birmingham, where Taylor is now based with her boyfriend and baby. “Todd and I moved in with Maria and her boyfriend for a month to focus on experimental production and ideas before we even went to Andy's studio,” says Fink. “Then the four of us holed up at Andy's and worked side by side for another month.”

Longtime fans will be comforted to know that while in some ways As Above So Below is a departure, what isn't left behind is that unmatched, dreamy essence that arises when Fink and Taylor harmonize. You know an Azure Ray song when you feel it- it’s chilling and familiar, like a draft of wind on the heart. It’s a haunted dreamscape that’s so compelling and evocative it’s seen its way onto many soundtracks, appropriately as the protagonist is falling in or out of love. Azure Ray captures expertly that fuzzy feeling, the unknowns of the beginnings and the deterioration of the endings; they are guides through the dark corridors and unknown passages of the heart. Says Taylor; “It reflects the uncertainties in the future that we all feel- along with the wonder and beauty." As above, so below. As in nature, Fink and Taylor heed, so in our lives.

As Above So Below is set for a September 4, 2012 release on Saddle Creek. The band will tour the US in the fall.

It’s nice to know that even indie-rock sorceresses still get attitude-checked by their mothers. Victoria Legrand, vocalist and keyboardist of the beloved dream-pop duo Beach House, got hers checked just the other day. “My mom said, ‘Well, at least you’re not a secretary,’ ” Legrand recalls. “And the thing was, I hadn’t even been complaining. I was like, ‘Mom, I know—I’ve been a secretary.’ ” Legrand, who was born in Paris—she’s the daughter of a painter and the niece of French composer Michel Legrand—has a voice that can sound hauntingly powerful in one breath and heartbreakingly crushing the next. She was raised in Maryland and Philadelphia, where she spent her teen years, but returned to France to study acting at L’École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq before landing back in Baltimore, where she met her musical other half, Alex Scally, through a mutual friend. “It was an inner feeling, like fate,” says Legrand. Offers Scally: “She was over at my house one night, and I had all these organs all over the place. We were probably drinking—it was 3 a.m. in the middle of summer—and I started playing some chords. But it wasn’t a cheesy TV moment like I’m describing—it was an insanely natural thing. We wrote our first song, ‘Saltwater,’ that night.”  Seven years later, Legrand and Scally are releasing their fourth record as Beach House, titled Bloom (Sub Pop), the follow-up to 2010’s critically acclaimed Teen Dream (not to be confused with Katy Perry’s 2010 album Teenage Dream—“guess we have to write a song called ‘i kiss [sic] a girl,” Beach House tweeted.) “We had a specific vision forBloom,” says Legrand, referring to the album’s enchantingly carnivalesque vibe: “Myth” is a powerful torch song, and “Wishes” feels like an end-of-summer Ferris wheel ride—nostalgic and full of longing. “We wrote a lot about the power of imagination,” she says, though both she and Scally are loathe to overanalyze their music. “I want people to feel how it makes them feel,” Legrand adds. “You get older and you realize that everything changes, that nothing lasts. But that also makes being in the moment and having the experience that much more meaningful.”

ALEXZ JOHNSON BIOGRAPHY

Alexz Johnson is never quite what'd you'd think: she is always, instead, a surprise. While she writes intimate, down-to-earth lyrics, they’re delivered with a larger-than-life, crystalline voice. “Growing up I was afraid of it,” she says, about realizing she could sing big as a small child- the sixth in a brood of ten-- in Vancouver.  “I thought it would blow me away.” And while at first she might be able to blend into the sea of other fresh-faced, struggling artists on the streets of her current hometown of New York City, she’s actually an entertainment veteran with fifteen years in the industry and a Gemini Award under her belt. Ten years ago she landed the lead role on Instant Star, a hit Canadian TV show which gave her a platform for her music. Alexz and her brother Brendan wrote the celebrated pop songs that her character, Jude Harrison, sang on the show. “I’m so grateful for my time on the show,” says Johnson who still acts and enjoys it, “and for giving me this loyal audience,” she says. “They've kept me going at times. At this point I know in my bones that there is an audience for what I do." 

When Instant Star wrapped after four seasons, Alexz endured her share of off-camera drama in her music career, when both Capitol and Epic, respectively, ended up shelving her records due to internal conflicts . "It’s been tough,” she says, “but something always keeps me going. Even with no money in my pocket, things land where they land and you keep moving.” Today, she's landed in New York City, in a move to re-launch and redefine herself as an artist. "It's been great, I’m living with my best friend in Brooklyn, and I’m meeting so many great people, working with so many great people, seeing amazing music," says the singer who will not only start playing around NYC soon, she’s about to launch a campaign for a major tour and funding for her next full-length via Kickstarter.

Currently Alexz is about to independently release the Skipping Stone EP, a five-song taste of the new music she has been writing in LA and Nashville, where she meets up to collaborate and record with singer-songwriter Jimmy Robbins. "I love Nashville, it's definitely affected me creatively," she says. "At one point when I was there and I was writing, I stopped in front of a wall of photos of all the great women at the Ryman -- Dusty Springfield, June Carter, Patsy Cline-- and I thought about how back then the voice was enough of a 'story.' You didn’t need the gimmick or the drama to be a singer. It was about how you sang." 

   It's fitting that Alexz would be leading her career in an independent direction, as her influences have been such free spirited and strong women themselves. She has cited the haunting nature of Stevie Nicks, the poetic spirit of Ricky Lee Jones, the style and independence of Diane Keaton as muses. At twenty-five she is feeling more whole, noting that she doesn’t feel the need to divide her acting self and her singing self the way she once did. “Look at Streisand and Cher,” she says. “Both incredible voices who could really act and be taken seriously.”

“I feel stronger, wiser,” she says of the songs on Skipping Stone. "I’m in love now, and writing from that place. I can look back at old relationships, old situations from a vantage point." The EP mirrors Alexz's new direction: it’s stripped down and airy, leaving room for her crystal clean, operatic voice to roam in styles which range from Johnny Cash-era country, to 40’s style ballads, to seductive, smoky world-beats. This time more than ever though, she says, "the vocals are the star.” While her music can tap into other times, Alexz herself has always been very attuned to the present moment.  “I was never one to look back or rely on what I may have done in the past,” she says.  “But that also meant I still needed approval, like I couldn’t give myself credit for what I’d done. I don't feel that way anymore. I can act. I can sing. Maybe it's time I take accountability for everything I have done and can do.” Sarah Durham Wilson

“My mother’s nickname for me is ‘Positive Patrick,’” says 18-year-old Patrick Schwarzenegger, who’s calling from Los Angeles after a day of classes at Brentwood School. “I like to live up to that title.” The dashingly handsome oldest son of Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger is doing his best to do just that. “I’m very fortunate to have been raised in my family,” he says, “I learned early about the importance of giving back. Two years ago, as one example, Schwarzenegger co-founded Project360, a line of apparel and accessories emblazoned with hopeful messages. “I’ve always been positive,” he says. He has also always liked clothes. “I love to go shopping and see what catches my eye. Having inherited his mother’s cheekbones, Schwarzenegger signed a contract with L.A. Models earlier this year and subsequently landed a campaign for Hudson Jeans. The campaign included a sky-high billboard of the former governor’s son shirtless over Sunset Boulevard. Which asks the question: Will he one day follow in his father’s footsteps and go into movies? “I’m not ruling anything out,” he says. “If an opportunity arises, then I won’t use school as an excuse not to work.” But right now, with college on the horizon—he’s looking at schools on both coasts—Schwarzenegger is more focused on spending time with his family. “I’m working on a big stained-glass piece for my mom for Christmas,” he says.

Sarah Durham Wilson is a former music and arts journalist who has worked at Rolling Stone, GQ, Vanity Fair, Vh1, Flaunt, and Interview Magazine. Two years ago, she left her magazine career in New York and L.A. in search of herself. She now lives in the Berkshires where she writes, practices Reiki, and runs DOITGIRL, an inspirational newsletter with a spiritualistic, pop star bent.

As a lifelong music fan, Wilson says lyrics have always been the most powerul medium in her life. “I painted every inch of the walls of my bedroom with lyrics. It was a lot of Pearl Jam and Hole. And growing up in Charlottesville, a lot of Dave Matthews. I realize now music was my dharma, the lyrics were my mantras. When my parents split when I was 12, I turned to music. When my mother died when I was 17, I also turned to music. After my engagement fell apart – to a lead singer —I was too sad to talk to my friends and family, so I just kept making them mixes to tell them how I felt, like what part of the process of it all I was in. I really didn’t even talk to them—I just sent mixes. Also, that’s when I truly surrendered to the power of pop music. Kelly Clarkson, Pink— those girls can write a break-up song.” That was also when she started to finally face the big questions “the ones I had been running from for so long.”

Now, Wilson quotes the empowering words of female musicians everyday and often in her newsletters. These days she mixes Rumi with Beyonce and Adele with the Dalai Lama. “It seems to work for the kick-ass women who are attracted to DOITGIRL. But I don’t mind using Springsteen or any other dudes for inspiration— as long as they are equal opportunity.” Wilson believes all women are potential rock stars in their own lives—“but most of us are side stage, watching our boyfriends- the men in our lives- live and play. They get to mess up. They get to put themselves first. They get to walk away from bad situations. Not us. The rules suck. For a very, very long time my self-esteem rested on men’s opinion of me. I just didn’t know any other way.” She says her intent with DOITGIRL is to get women to put themselves back in their own spotlights and center stage. “I cannot stand to see other women and young girls doing what I did for ridiculously long—watching life through the glass, from a little box. Punishing and apologizing for myself for feeling pain, or for even expressing myself in anyway at all. I was an approval addict. And I cannot bear to watch women compete with each other when we should all be banded together.”

“It’s true what the Dalai Lama says,” says the 32-year-old writer and Reiki master. “Western Womenwill save the world. But first, we have to save ourselves. Self-love is a quick jump to Universal Love— like the Jitney from the City to the Hamptons. We should all be at the wheel –driving our own lives. I think so many of us are stuffed in the trunk- with Fear and Self-Loathing driving. I know I was for all of my twenties. I know I still find myself in the trunk some days. That’s why DOITGIRL is as much for me as anyone else,” says Wilson, who has lived in N.Y.C., Omaha, L.A., Martha’s Vineyard, and now resides in an old red barn in the Berkshires two miles from the Kripalu Yoga & Wellness Center and Tanglewood.

“It’s a journey, an endless evolution. I think about the first day I was consciously kind to myself. It felt really weird. But that moment everything started to change, because self-love is transformative. If you love yourself, every single aspect of your life will change for the better. For me, having lived so long as my own worst enemy, I ran out of choices. It was as if that fear-based idea was true, that the world really was flat. I felt like I fell off. Nothing in your life really works without love.”

“I know self-love isn’t ‘cool,’ and I know some people think I’ve gone crazy,” she laughs. “But I also know- thanks in part to the newsletter- that I’m not alone. I do think celebrities like Russell Brand, who openly talks about meditation, or Lady Gaga, who champions self-love and individuality, are bringing in a new wave of honesty and enlightenment about how hard it truly is to be human. For me, I see someone like Lady Gaga or Beyonce like living Statues of Liberty— torch-bearing women symbolizing strength. I think it’s no coincidence that these women- Gaga, Adele, Nicki Minaj, Florence, Beyonce, Katy Perry— are so popular now. It’s time for women to find their strength. I love using them as examples of “Doitgirls.”

As far as the name of her newsletter? “It’s supposed to be fun and silly. I think it just serves as an instant punch of inspiration to conquer whatever you’re facing at that moment. I want the women who read this to know that they are capable of all. Unfortunately, I think a lot of women are afraid to live out loud, be seen, heard, messy, alive. So the name is really like a kick in the pants—or the lycra bodysuit.”
