I’m about to get super corny but I’m feeling so emotional right now. It’s been such an honor to watch Kaori over the years. She’s been my favorite women singles skater for years now. I’ve seen her grow into the confident and talented skater she is today. She emerged at a time of a quad revolution in women’s skating and managed to persevere without 3A or any quads. She has shown the world that talent is not just based on how many revolutions you can jump, but also artistry and mastering your technique.
Not only that, she has been such an excellent role model and example of true sportsmanship over her career. She has worked hard to transform the environment of figure skating from being hyper competitive to embracing one another. Her smile and sense of humor truly light up any stage she’s on. I can’t wait to see her move forward in her professional career as a coach, and wherever else life takes her
She has left her mark on the sport and hearts of fans forever
Thank you Kaori, for everything 💕
"Kaori Sakamoto saved Women's Figure Skating. She saved it. Because she was the shining star in the dark cloud of Beijing, and then she pushed every woman in the world to skate better. She pushed every woman in the world to jump higher, to jump further across the ice on their double Axels. And frankly, to be nicer to each other too. She sets the tone. She sets that tone we're talking about with the way they treat each other. I think her legacy is going to be so multifaceted, but the fact that she will be leaving this figure skating world a better place than what she found is amazing. Amazing." - Adam Rippon, Ashley Wagner and Sarah Hughes via The Runthrough podcast
Happy retirement to the four-time Olympic medalist, four-time World Champion and six-time National Champion, Kaori Sakamoto! ♡

Mone Chiba's LSp4 (BV 2.70 + GOE 1.35) | 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics, SP
Mone Chiba achieves a perfect score for her level four layback spin, garnering +5s for its grade of execution from all nine judges. She becomes the second woman ever to receive a unanimous +5 on a layback spin, following Satoko Miyahara at the 2018 Grand Prix Final.

i am thinking of how in 2018/19 many prominent north american skaters, coaches, and commentators closed ranks to cover up john coughlin’s actions after he died, and it only stopped when ashley wagner — who is much more decorated than that pos ever was — named herself publicly as a survivor of coughlin’s actions.
i am thinking of how in 2019/20 when morgan cipres was charged with soliciting a 13 yo at his rink, his then-coach was accused of helping cover that up. that coach received a six-month suspension and went straight back to coaching and is at the olympics right now. cipres’ ex-partner vanessa james pretended nothing wrong happened and she had a new partner for no reason whatsoever, and skate canada was perfectly happy to let her do this if james could get them an medal in beijing.
and now, six years later, the who’s who of ice dancing closed ranks around nikolaj sørensen even though skate canada suspended sørensen for six years. training mates still invite him to weddings. commentators still gloss over why fourner-baudry switched partners. meanwhile, the one person who used her public platform to call this out lost her job over it.
a suspension or probation does very little for athlete safety, when the message from the skating community is that they’ll protect abusers for as long as they can.
