Monika Paulsen (née Pricken) was one of the first Hamburg-based Beatles fans, right from when the band performed at the Indra and the Kaiserkeller in 1960. She was interviewed for a German book about the Hamburg days; a translated except follows: “Because I spoke English quite well... a friend wanted me to ask The Beatles a question. I stuck with Stuart Sutcliffe and because we were always there [at the Indra], we got acquainted. The first contact had been made, after all. But when The Beatles moved to Kaiserkeller, Stuart was almost exclusively with Astrid. That’s how I got to know George better. I was 17 and he was 17. George was unbelievably funny and open, and we had a lot of fun. Mind you, it was completely platonic. […] I invited them all to my house. That was about three or four weeks after I had met them at the Indra — so probably about September 1960. They wore jackets and black pants, sort of like waiters’ pants. And they were very friendly and extremely well-mannered. […] My mother and grandmother cooked a meal. […] Before they headed back to the club, each of them politely said thank you with a handshake and a bow. That was quite cute… My parents met The Beatles as nice and unspoiled youngsters.” - Mach Schau! Die Beatles in Hamburg (1992)
