INK DRAWINGS BY VICTOR HUGO (FRENCH, 1802 - 1885)
In addition to penning masterpieces like Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, French novelist and politician Victor Hugo created more than 4,000 drawings over the course of his lifetime, utilizing such innovative techniques as ink blotting, object impressions, folding, rubbing, finger-smudging, use of his non-dominant hand, looking away from the page, the incorporation of unconventional materials such soot, coffee grounds, and charcoal from matchsticks, and even drawing during séances! While Hugo himself downplayed his talent for visual art for fear it would overshadow his literary output, his drawings were admired by contemporaries like van Gogh and Eugène Delacroix, and are viewed today as precursors not only to subsequent artistic movements like abstract expressionism and surrealism, but also to psychiatric techniques later experimented with by Sigmund Freud and others. Delacroix reportedly claimed that if Hugo had chosen to become a painter, he would have been among the best of the nineteenth century.
