Tips on slowly forgiving yourself
1. Admit your fault. It was your fault. You did something wrong. You messed up. Admit it to yourself where you went wrong.
2. Ask yourself, why did I do that? Or why didn’t I do that? Your answers may not come to you as soon as possible. You can talk to trusted people about this. You may come to a point of denial and it’s okay. Understanding is a process.
3. Apologize to people involved. If you’re brave enough, let this be the first thing you do when you mess up. It takes real strength to swallow your pride and admit to people that you went wrong and apologize.
4. Face the consequences. This can be the hardest part. It’s going to involve you and other people who were part of what happened. This is a process. This can take a lot of time. Just go through it and grow through it. This teaches you patience and perseverance.
5. When it’s all over, stop bringing it up to yourself. The only time you remind yourself of this is when you need to reflect what you’ve learned and apply it to the next circumstance you’re going to face.
6. Accept it happened. Understand that you’re not perfect. You messed up and you will mess up again. When you’ve finally accepted it and let yourself grew with what happened, no one can use this against you.
7. Move on. Stop blaming yourself over and over again. Don’t think about it at night when you’re about to sleep. Don’t let yourself live in the past. You’ve got so much going on in the present, don’t let a mistake ruin that.
8. It is so hard. Just keep going.
