Now on view, “Unexpected Light: Works by Young Il Ahn” presents abstract paintings from the artist’s “Water” series inspired by his experience of being lost on the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Santa Monica. In 1983, Ahn was aboard a small fishing boat when he was caught in a fog so dense that he could not see his hands in front of his face; suddenly, the fog cleared, revealing sunlight on the water all around him. In each “Water” painting Ahn attempts to interpret the infinite ways in which light, water, and fog interact on the ocean. From a distance, the paintings appear static, each canvas a flat surface rendered in a single vibrant color. You may be familiar with Tony Smith’s monumental sculpture, “Smoke,” which greets visitors as they enter the Ahmanson Building. Now you can learn more about the artist and his lifelong exploration of patterns found in organic life that led to the massive sculpture in the new exhibition “Tony Smith: Smoke,” on view through July 2. Through approximately 25 objects in all media, the exhibition traces the work’s evolution, beginning with Smith’s early Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired buildings of the 1940s and early 1950s, cellular drawings and paintings from the 1950s, and related sculpture and sketches from the 1960s and early 1970s. #lacma #TonySmith http://ift.tt/2mnGeBX
