Safe Haven

The house deepest in Harland Grey had always been isolated from the rest. Even with recent property developments and the move of the Uchiha family inhabiting it a few years ago, it remained more or less the same. Quiet, slightly aged, and bearing the appearance that it possessed all the knowledge in the world within its walls.
For behind the rock and cement barrier that separated them from the outside, stood wooden bookshelves laden with thick, and occasionally dusty tomes. No matter how many times Itachi explored the house, he seemed to discover more and more secrets that were ordinarily hidden from view. Markings, usually. Strange engravings that were carved into floorboards, behind cupboards, even the furniture themselves.
It was an intriguing home, but at this precise moment, Itachi was more interested in the company of his beloved little brother than anything else. Especially seeing that their parents were going to be busy entertaining guests for the evening. Work-related, perhaps.
“He’s out in the garden,” their kindly mother had said, with her usual warm, gentle smile. “Be sure not to stay out too late, ne?”
It was with that that young Uchiha Itachi traipsed out to the back, school backpack forgotten on the floor, and dark, curious eyes searching as he looked for his beloved little brother.
When he did find Sasuke, the ever familiar feeling of affection washed over him. He would recognise that stuck up hair anywhere.
“Good evening, Otouto. What are you doing there?”
Tongue puckered out in concentration, Sasuke was crouched in the corner of the yard watching as a caterpillar inched along. Mother had been busy all day- busier than usual and little Sasuke had had no desire to get in her way his nose wrinkling in thought at the extra chores. All he wanted to do was wait for his older brother to get home so they could play, the thought of Itachi causing little ears to perk up at the sound of the elder's voice as it called out to him.
“Good evening, Otouto. What are you doing there?”
Turning around, the tiny tot bounded for the elder of the brothers, excitement thrumming throughout his very being. Ever since big brother had started to go to school, Sasuke's favorite time of the day was when Itachi came back.
“Niisan! There's a caterpillar! Over there! Come! It's going really slow!” Grabbing a hold of his brother's hand in his tiny two, Sasuke set off pulling the older boy behind him.
Coming to the spot where he had been watching it, Sasuke put a hand to the top of his brows, as he scanned the grass where he had last seen it, standing on the tips of his toes to get a better view before turning to Itachi with a saddened expression.
“It got away Niisan.”
