and not to sound like a conspiracy theorist but another reason I hate the return of 2000’s th*nspo shit is bc starving does make women frail and has longer term consequences like early osteoporosis, brittle bones/teeth, insomnia, ect. Your muscles will start eating themselves. It also makes you extremely emotional and severely lowers your capacity for critical thinking not bc you’re a girl but because your brain isn’t getting any fucking nutrients so idk I just feel like its very convenient that every time there’s an uptick in fascist rhetoric and women’s rights are being stripped suddenly it’s peak fashion for women to be starving, weak, and exhausted

I think what’s important to understand about HDB and Elysium is that in another fantasy world Harry would’ve been thee chosen one. his birth is almost biblical in its description, born to a single mother, surrounded by dying communards? A blizzard raging outside?

He has Magic Powers. He’s smart, sensitive, fit. He has the energy and insane drive to make the world Better. He doesn’t want to hurt anyone.

Nothing lays this out more than the Greatest Innocence. Harry is an avatar of the world spirit, a mirror held up to all of Elysium. So many characters see themselves reflected in him.

Except Innocences aren’t actually real. They’re the narrative's way of ripping apart the Great Men Of History concept. They’re an elected position. They’re people who commit mass scale atrocities and claim those atrocities were an inevitability after the fact.

Harry is in essence what Innocences claim to be. So he will never be one. He's a disabled nobody from an occupied nation the world left behind.

It makes me sad when people frame 'pre-martinaise harry' as this horrible person that in/post canon harry is seperate from and who he hates and must attone for being. We don't see a lot of it but he doesnt seem inconsistent with the people harry can be played as to me, and I don't see losing your memory as a 'rebirth' in this case as much as a desperate and violent final act to end his own pain, either by dying or by cutting off the largest sum of himself he can. I think the text shows this as incomplete- he is still in pain, he just has this new unstable position and the danger and freedom that comes with it. He's haunted by it because of that too, because it did not truly go away just because he lost his memory, he just can't understand it or have a sense of reality around it. I read this as also applying to his self and who he is. 

A lot of the fanfic I've read just assumes that he must have been awful, and must owe everyone who knew him an apology and proof that he has truly and essentially changed. I think this ignores the failure of care implied in the text and what it means that harry is someone who was in a lot of pain and tried to kill himself to escape it. I don't think he was a horrible person before, I do think he was suffering. I love disco fic writers, I'm spoiled by them every day, I do also wish that the common post-canon vision for him was less focused on this complete reinvention and sobriety-relapse-attonement deal. I've never played him as getting fully sober, it never even occured to me to do so. I don't think adding a romance with kim or making him get sober or fixing his relationship with his colleagues- as sweet and hopeful and sincere as it can be to imagine- is the 'best' or 'right' outcome from his character.
