- It’s got mind-blowing world building, like seriously, and to me, this series is what the HP world could have looked like if we’d have gotten a much deeper look. It explores how different wizarding cultures approach magic, it separates wizards into 2 (well, 3 really) kinds : Dark Wizards, Light Wizards and then some bonus Gray Wizards, and has all the culture that comes with these differences. NOT ONLY THAT, but it also has an actual major plot point about magical creatures and how they’re treated in the wizarding world, and it’s so so so fascinating I could talk about it for hours, it’s all so inspiring too. I remember seeing a post going around about how it would have been cool to have some sociopolitical exploration of the werewolf condition, and well, this fic actually deals with that among other stuff.- Seriously awesome characterisation : - Harry is obviously very different from canon Harry because he had a *coughs* different *coughs* education. Actually a little warning for that but Dumblebubble and Lily are not portrayed in a very positive light (though I love them both and it didn’t put me off), and James, Sirius and Remus have their really bad moments too, but to me it didn’t feel like the usual bashing, especially for James, Sirius, and Remus, they just felt like real human beings making a shit load of mistakes in a way that I rarely read in fics and published books but resonated so much with me, which sums up a lot of this story’s characters and is what contributed to making me love it. Still, if you really can’t stand fics that criticize them constantly, especially Dumblebounty, Lily and James, this is probably not going to be the most pleasant experience for you. Anyway, it’s a very different Harry so there’s definitely an OOC mention there, but I feel like some of canon!Harry’s traits come through sometimes, mainly the self-sacrificing thing and the absolute need to save everyone (which is the one thing that’s actually dismissed in many of the slytherin!Harry fics I’ve read before), and I just love this fic’s Harry so much, I fell in love really, he can feel very disconnected sometimes and I think it put some people off, but it’s actually what I loved about him, how he learns to open up and realises he doesn’t have to be on his own and just how much he changes over time. - Snape is perfect, he’s an asshole who cares very deeply only about a select few people, he makes mistakes again and again and again, and you want to slap him so often and sometimes are reluctant to admit he’s right, which sounds perfectly canon to me. - DRACO IS AMAZING, this fic’s Draco is probably my favourite Draco, you see him grow along with Harry obviously (since Harry is sorted slytherin+it IS a Drarry fic), and his character development is masterful, the subplots with his character only serve to make him grow and learn which I love, but he also keeps a lot of his flaws and has to work hard on them, just like we all do, and THAT my friend felt so good. You really feel the influence of characters on each other, how these dynamics change them for better or for worse. These 3 are the main characters and I’m really keeping myself from talking about others because it would really make this way too long, but honestly, every character’s characterisation is amazing, and they’re all there so that’s saying a lot. from McGonagall, to Cho, to Scrimgeour (and he’s actually one of my favourites in this), it’s just hard not to love them all. Add the awesome OCs (because they ARE, don’t run because of the OCs mention, there’s a lot but they’re amazing) and for someone who loves to be driven along by good characters, it’s heaven in a fic. The one character that’s not complex in some way is actually Voldy (not that I can remember anyway), which put me off at first but actually makes sense if you think about how he’s a guy who ditched several parts of his soul, so I grew to sort of love that. And the other villains are so good you won’t even care. AND I should definitely mention the Malfoy parents because DAMN are they well-written too. Narcissa is fucking badass but still a bigot at times and Lucius is beautifully complex as well, and his relationship with Draco is wonderfully explored and just as complex as they all are. One last thing, but the thing I loved about the character development, and that is actually probably due to the fact that it’s VERY long, is how long it takes for them to really change, how they keep making mistakes after having been given a lesson, and how it’s not that easy to understand things that go against everything you’ve always believed. IT’S SO GREATI’m going to avoid saying much more because this is definitely way too long, but if anyone does want to read it, be aware that there’s heavy, heavy angst; in the same way that characters drop like flies when the war strikes in canon, the war in this fic is way more like the wars we’ve all read about, with several battles spanning the years and ennemies that are genuinely going to make you think the “good guys” could lose, so a lot of characters die. This goes along with some heavy as fuck gore (in torture contexts), like, some scenes I had to skip it was so horrific, which is not something I usually do, and it also has some terrible rape scenes in the context of the war (not as many as there could be, I actually think there was only one but just in case there’s one I don’t remember, be aware). There are also some explicit sex scenes that start at the end of the sixth book if I remember correctly, and then several others that happen during the seventh (all the really explicit ones happen between Harry and Draco, other pairings’s sexy times are only talked briefly about). The author does talk about the potential harmful content at the beginning of every story, and does that for every chapter on both ffnet and skyehawke, so you’ll definitely be warned properly. While some people consider the fic to have aged a bit, and I guess it sort of has, as someone who wasn’t there at the start of the fandom and the first drarry fics, I still thoroughly enjoyed it and couldn’t believe I’d never come across it before, because it was such a wonderful journey for me, and it might be cheesy but I felt really changed by it. And I mean, I’m not recommending it here for nothing Okay so I’m going to stop there, if you want to know more before reading it, especially about other potential warnings, ask away and we’ll see if I remember everything, but in the meantime here are the links :It’s both on skyehawke and ffnet, but the author had to censor the sex scenes on ffnet because of their policies (and not the super gory ones which always makes me laugh bitterly) but I’m pretty sure they aren’t censored on skyhawke (might be wrong though), so there you go. OH and it’s probably going to be obvious but the first book is Saving Connor (Skyehawke link) (ffnet link). Here’s a link to the main page for all the books for each website, which both include an explanation of some of the author’s choices/reasons to write the story (among other story-related stuff), and it’s more developped on ffnet :Skyehawkeffnet
