About us.
The words echoed in her mind, memories flashing through her mind. Maybe they could start over, with only the good things. She could leave out how she’d left when she found out that Jean had killed Xavier - how he’d yelled at her, telling her that she just needed to calm down and listen to someone.
Maybe this was a second chance, to get things right.
“Yeah, of course. I’ll tell you whatever you want, darlin’.” Her lips curled into a half-smile, only breaking his gaze when she went to glance around for a street sign, finding her bearings. “I know a place, if you don’t mind walking a couple blocks.”
Rogue had seen the bar on her way to meet him - funny how Logan had started to frequent places right around the bar they used to always go to. They’d spent more than a few evenings there, drinking whiskey and playing pool until the bartender made them leave. So many good memories, remembered only by her now.
“Well, to start off, we met upstate - at Xavier’s school.”
Logan gave a nod of his head at the words. He didn’t mind a walk. As long as they had drinks like she promised and he could listen to her ramble a bit, he would have followed her to the end of the world right then and there. He stepped in time with her, sticking rather close to her side so that their arms were brushing as they walked.
“Xavier’s,” Logan repeated. “Heard ‘bout that one. S’a school? For mutants, ya?” he wondered. “Someone invited me there, didn’t go, ain’t sound like my type of gig. Guess it was, though?” he hummed thoughtfully.
“Oh dear, you really don’t remember do you?” Emma sighed. Logan didn’t intimidate her, even with his height. “And here I thought you were just playing a little game with me.” she couldn’t help giving him a sly little smile. “I know I annoy you Logan, but I didn’t think I was that bad.”
But, it seemed he really didn’t remember. “Let me refresh your memory then. My name is Emma Frost.” she began, moving a little closer to him. “Perhaps you’ve heard of Frost International, but that’s not how we know each other. You first knew me as the White Queen of the Hellfire Club.” she paused, wondering if those would spark any memories. Any recognition.
“Around the nineteen-eighties, you and I both joined the X-men. Cute little group of mutant heroes, darling. I was a thorn in their side for quite a while- until the witch Selene Galliomurdered my students.” Logan knew this- she’d told him this before, but if she wanted to ring any bells- the whole story had to be told.
“The X-men found me, took me in, I left the Hellfire Club, have been plotting to kill Selene ever since. It’s all a rather dull tale. But before you left, I was sure we were becoming friends.” She looked at her nails, feigning boredom. “We all wondered why you took off like you did. Never even said goodbye.” she glanced back at the bar. “And these bars are dreadful, dear, let me take you somewhere to get the good stuff. I’ll buy.” she cocked her head. “That is, if you trust me and don’t try to kill me with those cute little claws of yours.” she paused. “Speaking of claws, darling, you should keep an eye on your daughter.”
“This ain’t no fuckin’ game, do I look like I play games?” Logan asked her. He wasn’t really sure if he had before, but that part didn’t matter much. He wasn’t the type right now, not with this. And, yeah, she was kind of annoying him, but... well, everyone annoyed him, so she was ahead of the game getting him to talk, at least.
When she moved closer, even with the introduction, he let out a growl deep in his chest. He knew about Frost International, he’d heard it a bit on the news, but it didn’t strike any memories, nor did the Hellfire Club. Was he apart of this club? He didn’t seem like the type to go and join boy scouts or any clubs. Sounded fancy.
“That’s the second damn time I’ve heard X-Men, I ain’t... I ain’t hero material, darlin’,” Logan pointed out. It could be a coincidence. Logan, X-Men, Mutant. It was a long-shot, but he just... didn’t feel like a hero. Matter-of-factly, she didn’t seem like a hero, either.
His lips pursed at the mention of murder. That had to be tough, but it didn’t bring a tear to his eye. He’d heard a lot of stories lately, after-all. “Ya didn’t get a good-bye? Wonder who pissed me off ‘nuff to leave like that, then,” he reckoned with a one-armed shrug. “We can get a drink--” Logan began before pausing. “Fuck ya mean daughter?”
Her eyes snapped up to meet Logan’s when his hand touched hers. “Oh. Alright.” Rogue was dumbfounded by his reaction - he couldn’t tell her from Eve, but he was being this genuine with her. Maybe he would actually take the time to relearn everything he used to know about her.
But God, I wish he would just remember.
Rogue pulled her hand away, ignoring the way his hand felt through her gloves and tightening her fist around his tags. She wanted to talk to him more, find out what had happened to him - or at least what he knew. Rogue needed him to know her, too, and needed him in her life most of all. He was one of the only people she could trust. “We should.. D'you… Oh, hell. Come have a drink with me? Looks like I have to make a good first impression.”
Logan dropped his hands when she pulled hers away, glad that she’d decided to keep them like he wanted. She clearly had meant something to him. The tags, the way he felt so... comfortable around her already. He didn’t know what they were, but it was a needle in the hay for him. Maybe, she’d link him to a memory or two. If not, well, if he spoke to her a bit and kept in contact, maybe he’d at least have something from his past.
He slowly bobbed his head at the question. “Ya, a drink sounds good. You can... tell me ‘bout some stuff. ‘Bout us, how we know each other?” he reckoned in a somewhat hopeful tone.
Bobby couldn’t help the confusion that stretched off of his face when the other replied back to him. He had definitely been gone for too long. How long as the other been like this? Was it something new or was it something that’s been going on. “Uh… okay.” He looked at the other and sighed, he didn’t need more angst for him in his life, especially since he mostly came to get advice from his old mentor. “What’s the last thing you remember, grump.” He asked the other while he crossed his arms and tried to get to the bottom of the situation.
“Uh… about twenty sum years ago.” Bobby stated, answering the other. He always put other’s before him, so his situation with John was put on hold. He sighed and looked at the other with a soft expression.
“You were with the X-Men, before I left. Well, I don’t think you were decided about joining or I don’t know. But we went on missions together before.” He looked softly at the male and looked around. “What happened to you, Logan?”
Logan eyed him for a moment, narrowing them into a glare at the question. “Don’t fuckin’ remember much of anythin’ past waking up one day a couple o’ years ago,” he admitted. He’d tried to recall... anything about his past, but it was all a cloud of mystery to him. He just had... feelings, sometimes, when things felt familiar.
“Twenty years? So, I was ‘ere ‘round then,” Logan claimed, trying to piece together some broken timeline from the few people he’d found himself speaking to lately. “X-Men?” He repeated in a clearly confused tone. He was sort of familiar with the group. Mutant heroes.
He didn’t feel like a hero.
“Dunno, kid,” Logan claimed as he stepped away to grab another cigarette to light up.
Jimmy let out a growl as he moved his face close to his alternate father’s own. The vein in the side of his neck showing as he spoke rough and sternly between clenched teeth “Get your damn hand off of me.” The claws on his captured arm all popped out the second he had finished speaking. The Jean of his world had given him a mental crash course of his father’s history, she had even downloaded some of his recordings from the danger room into his mind on top of the training he performed on his own. He knew any Wolverine would have been dangerous for and stepping up to them was a death sentence, for most. But he didn’t fear the man, nor did he show any sign of concern over it as the sides of his mouth curved a bit to reveal his teeth ever so slightly.
His light blue eye flared as he spoke to the man with his teeth a bit unclenched. “I was born with them, a gift from my father. Remind you of someone do they?” Yanking his arm away, Jimmy readjusted his sweater before continuing. “Didn’t know I was a mutant til I flipped my car and somehow all my muscle and skin started to grow back. As for you well, from what I hear, no one is too sure on that.”
Logan let him go as he stared at the claws, his skin crawling at the sight. Especially when the kid mentioned that they were a gift from his damn father. There was no way this was happening. He couldn’t remember his life before a few years ago, that much wasn’t new, and yeah, he wanted to remember everything. Eventually. But right now? He wasn’t ready for a kid to be apart of that equation. Not a kid, not a lover or a wife, not a family. It was too much.
It had him stepping back to create some space between them. “Ya, well, they ain’t the only ones who can’t tell ya,” Logan claimed. “I dunno what the fuck ya were thinkin’ was gonna happen... lookin’ for me, but this ain’t what ya’ think. Take yer ass on home.”
“Not from here, exactly. Well, I guess you could say-” She stumbled over her words, hand raising to the chain around her neck, flustered in more ways than one. It was Logan - James, Logan, the name didn’t matter - but he’d forgotten her. And not like he forgot other girls, no. Rogue could tell he was trying to remember, but it was just out of reach.
Deep breath. Panic later. Don’t let him notice, please god don’t let him notice.
“Sorry. It’s been.. oh, that don’t matter, I guess.” Rogue gently pulled at the chain around her neck, removing it to reveal a set of dog tags - the tags he’d given her when she left, the tags she hadn’t taken off since.
“I figure you’ll be wantin’ these back.” She looked down and ran her thumb across the engraved name across one of the tags; Logan. “You gave ‘em to me, a long time ago now. Made me promise to keep 'em safe for you. Told me they were the most valuable thing you owned, and I’m the only person you’d trust with 'em.”
She hadn’t meant to say that out loud, but the words poured out of her while her eyes locked on to the tags. Shaking her head slightly to break her gaze, Rogue held her hand out. “I’m sorry about your place. I always did like taking road trips up there with you.”
It was easy to pick up on how she was feeling. Her scent was sending it to him in waves. Logan wasn’t good at comforting people, he knew that much. But, he found himself wanting to try with her. He still didn’t move into her space, though. She seemed uncomfortable around him, even before she knew he’d lost parts of himself.
His eyes darted down towards the dog tags. He recalled a dream or two featuring dog tags similar to the ones in her hands. He didn’t mention that, though, she was upset enough.
Logan reached up, but instead of taking the tags like she wanted and expected him to do, he covered her hand to close it around the tags. “If I trusted ya to keep ‘em safe, I think ya should keep ‘em,” he admitted to her. He was collecting pieces of himself, yes. But, this woman... she had to mean something to him. He wanted her to have something from his history, something that was important to him and part of his identity. They were military tags, for sure, and that was a big discovery for him.
My… My name? He doesn’t recognize me?
Rogue took a half-step backward as Logan came towards her. She flinched internally as she gave the upper hand to him. Rookie move, Marie. It had been so long since she’d seen him. Too long.
“You’ve gotta be playin’ with me.” She shook his gaze and forced a laugh, hoping it was a joke, but the confusion in his eyes gave it away. “It’s me, Rogue.” That’s wasn’t quite true though. “Well, to you, it’s always been Anna Marie.”
“You really went and forgot about me?”
“Anna Marie,” Logan repeated in hopes that it’d ring some bell for him. It didn’t, it was a high-hope, but he wanted to do something because she smelled upset and that made his stomach turn a little. He couldn’t explain it. He’d ran into quite a few people who supposedly knew him these past few days, but she was the only one who brought forth a reaction.
“Can’t say I remember much of anythin’,” he admitted to her. He reached into his back pocket to grab his wallet, opening it up to show a driver’s license for Logan James. “Went to the address, but damn place got burned down,” he claimed with a one-armed shrug, snapping his wallet shut. It was all he had on him when he woke up. “Didja know me from ‘round here? Met a few who know me last couple o’ days.”

Normally, Logan stayed away from the busy parts of the streets. He could blend in with a crowd pretty easily, but it always had him unsettled. It wasn’t always avoidable, though. He had to get some stuff done and that involved him going in and out of stores. One of his priorities, oddly enough, was trying to figure out how the hell to parent since apparently he had a kid (or two) running around.
As he moved around a corner, he paused at the shrill yell that rung in his ears. It had the hair on the back of his neck standing up. He didn’t want to get involved, but when he found the source of the screaming to be in the back of an alley, three people incapacitated, two struggling from a corner and five with guns trying to wrangle the people up, what little good in him decided to make itself known.
Claws out, Logan, hating himself for getting involved, ran forward and leaped over one of the parked vans, landing on the ground with his claws right into one of the gunman’s shoulders. He ripped them out and took a spray of bullets, easily shaking them off as he began fighting the five while the other two tried to wake and drag their friends off.
gabby liked the real world. it was brighter, and there was less killing. and she had laura again, and jonathan. she wasn’t as alone as she’d been when laura escaped. but the best thing was also the worst thing – her decisions were her own now. her life was in her own hands and every single action she took was her responsibility. the very idea left her second-guessing every instinct she had, wondering what was her and what was x23_4gab. she was still working out how to separate those two.
but the school – that was her favorite thing. an entire mansion filled with mutants learning how to be themselves and preparing to save the world. she liked that idea – she clung to it, hoping that saving the world is who gabrielle kinney was. and she spent a lot of time waiting, though she wouldn’t admit it to anyone, not even laura. she waited for her father. the famous wolverine. he probably didn’t even know she existed, and all she knew about him was what she heard from her sister or read in comic books. and if she’d learned anything since escaping the lab, it’s that real life isn’t always what you expect.
gabby snuck out with the help of jonathan, who proved to be a successful distraction from one small honeybadger jumping out the front door. he joined her once she was off the grounds and together they got to work – sniffing. she and laura had been born from him, and gabby was positive that she’d be able to sniff him out. they shared half of his dna, after all. but it took… hours – and when she finally did find him, he was in a bar with a cigar hanging out of his mouth. gabby couldn’t decide if it was underwhelming or disappointing or both, but he was… not the wolverine that comic books made him out to be.
she pulled herself up on the stool next to him, ignoring the bartender’s protests against both her and her wolverine’s presence. gabby tapped his arm, eyebrows creased, mouth pressed together in a tight line as she wondered whether finding him like this would be worth it. that is, assuming, he even believed her. she didn’t really want to claw out in public like this.
“su es logan?” gabby asked, eyeing the lines on his forehead and the mutton chops framing his face. “me llamo gabrielle. el es jonathan.” she pointed down at the wolverine at her feet, wearing an x-men vest – courtesy of teamwork between herself and laura – and bearing its teeth to someone staring. “soy tu hija.”
Logan had been having a good night. The last few days had been a whirlwind for him, He had received clue after clue, one little piece of the story following another piece of the story. Some of them years apart, some of the connections having been lasting for years. His mind was a mess and he knew he needed to look deeper into things. He needed to go to this Xavier’s place, for one, but he was avoiding it.
It was strange. What he’d been looking for all these years, he was scared to actually grab when it presented itself to him. He wasn’t sure what was laying ahead for him. He wasn’t sure if he was going to like the person he’d been in the past, not that he liked himself right now. Eventually, he’d have to get over it and start getting everything together again, hoping that whatever made him forget wasn’t going to bite him in the ass.
But, for now, he sat. Drinking, smoking, just taking a moment to really think on things. He was used to interruptions, but he could tell you one thing: a kid in a bar interrupting him, that was a first. How the hell did she get past the bouncer?
Frank, the bartender glared for a moment, but then his expression turned to amusement. He leaned over to whisper to Logan what in the hell she’d just said, causing the man to tense up.
“Fuck no she ain’t,” Logan replied, causing the asshole to laugh even louder. “Nuh-huh, listen here, ya brat,” he said as he turned to point to her. “I ain’t yer fuckin’ dad, dunno who the fuck put that in yer brain, but no way. Now, you take yer mini-bear and hike ya asses outta ‘ere,” he ordered.
He stood up from his seat, ready to go.
“Take your kid, Logan.” “Do I fuckin’ look like I bred either of these?” “Well, the wolverine looks--” “Fuck you, Frank.”
Logan brushed it off and tossed money on the bar as he walked around, hurrying out the door, refusing to even look back to see what the hell the kid’s next move was.
Even in a different time, she still loved the way New York felt. The dark alleys, smoke in the air, dim streetlights casting long shadows. The sort of peaceful you can only get with the roar of a city behind you.
Her high heels kept time with the music playing over her headphones as she walked, eyes darting from the ground beneath her to the neon signs above her. She’d been doing some digging, looking for any signs of anyone she could trust - and Logan was the first one she’d stumbled upon. Cage fighting, if he couldn’t get any more predictable.
Rogue just hoped he wouldn’t be unhappy to see her. Well, she paused, sighing. Not too unhappy. She had run away without a word, leaving when she realised what Jean had done - how they had all lied to her, made a fool of her. But Logan, he wouldn’t do that. She trusted him.
Click, click, click.
She had seen videos online of him taking hit after hit, coming up without a scratch. The people had even shared their location when they posted them on that web page with the bluebird she’d found. Nearing the last intersection before the bar she’d seen the video at, Rogue suddenly felt her stomach turn.
“Shit,” she swore under her breath. “I should jus’ turn around and go home…”
Rogue took a deep breath, steeling herself.
No. I can trust him.
She pulled at her lace gloves, pushing onward and crossing the street. It wasn’t much longer before she saw him - saw Logan. Rogue stopped dead in her tracks as she saw him lean back against the building, anxiety building in her chest.
Two steps forward.
What do I say?
Two more steps.
Does it even matter?
Deep breath. Nearly there.
You can trust him.
“Not even one, for old times’ sake?”
Normally, Logan didn’t bat an eye at anyone who approached him. He wasn’t an innocent man, of course he took people to bed sometimes, but most nights he preferred the ‘me, myself, and I’ crowd. Tonight being one of those nights, he was feeling stressed and all he wanted was a good cigar (but he was settling for a cigarette), a few more beers and then to pass-out in his trailer.
Which was why when she first stepped up to him, he was determined not to give her the time of the day, not even look at her. But, as she closed in, something hit him. He near-blocked out her question. Old time’s sake, it phased him just barely because her scent gave away the fact that he definitely knew her, or once had.
Cigarette dropped and forgotten, he pushed off the wall to step closer into her personal space, getting another catch of her scent before blurting out, “What’s yer name?”
Bobby didn’t know what to do at this point. He didn’t regret picking his husband over the X-Men, but he knew that they needed some help or guidance. Everyone from their old ‘home’ now hated John. And now they had to just pack up twenty years and move back to where it all started and Bobby just didn’t know how he felt about that.
He decided to go to someone he felt that would give him a neutral standpoint. He knew Jean and Professor would tell him that he should forget about John, because John caused him to abandon everything - not that Bobby had an issue with it. But he needed an unbiased opinion and Logan nearly always offered that. So using his cyrokinetic perception he perceived where the other male would be and when he would be. Ice glazed eyes found their target and soon Bobby was driving off to where Logan had went.
Once he landed at the spot, he saw Logan already heading towards another bar. “This man.” Bobby chuckled to himself, he was definitely still a major jokester and doubted that it would ever change. He soon walked faster to catch up to the man. He walked a little slower, because he didn’t Logan to get a whiff of his scent just yet. He saw that the other looked the same and was happy, because apart of him felt like he was home again.
“Still as grumpy as ever.” He chuckled and looked at the other with the shake of his head. Moving next towards the older male. “Long time no see, old man.” He chuckled and waved his hand and took away the cold energy away from the small atmosphere around the lighter so that it would light easier.
“I wanted your help… well advice.”
Logan hated the vibes the man was giving off. They were too... positive, bubbly, it wasn’t something he was used to. So, in response, he glared at the young man while he took a few long, silent-filled drags from his cigarette. It wasn’t until he admitted the reasons for seeking him out that Logan’s brow raised. Long time no see? He knew this man? The last few days had been ones of discovery, he couldn’t piece together how the few he’d met could possibly link together. Unless, this kid was a mutant, too.
Pushing off the wall he was leaned against, he closed his palm around the cigarette to extinguish it, dropping the butt of it carelessly to the ground before he moved to tower over the slightly shorter man.
“Fuck yer advice, ain’t interestin’ in helping,” Logan claimed to him. “Unless, yer willin’ to answer some questions, too. Ya said long time no see? When exactly did we last see one ‘nother?” he questioned curiously, not wanting to push it.
It was obvious that the giant old fool hadn’t been really listening to him. It wasn’t like Jimmy blamed him much. He was literally some random guy who didn’t really exist here coming up and talking to him. Still, it would have been a lie to say it wasn’t at the very least annoying let alone disrespectful. But at least he now saw where he got it from.
Jimmy let out an annoyed sigh before taking a few steps back following the man for a few seconds before holding his closed fist out and quickly launching al three of his long claws out from it less than a foot in front of Logan to stop him. The claws were bone at first, but slowly, a liquid metal like substance spread across from them. It coated them turning them from ragged bone into sleek sharp and perfectly coated metal. “You know, Red….Jeanie, talked you up quite a bit. It’s a little disappointing.”
Slowly, he retracted the two on the side but kept the claw in the middle out only a few seconds longer before it quickly went back into his forearm and he dropped his hand. “What did one expect from a boozy fossil.” Jimmy took in a breath of the cold air that still reeked of booze and blood and then begun to walk away.
Logan stopped in his tracks when the other moved in front of him, blocking his path towards the bar he had been planning to drown his night away in. He fists clenched tightly, he really didn’t want to beat the hell out of this kid, but he was testing his limit. Neck turned to crack audibly, getting himself limber, he took a step forward, ready to honestly throw one good punch at the kid just to get him to scram.
However, he stopped at the claws that came out. His eyes focused on them for as long as they were out, barely registering Jeanie and Red, whoever the hell they were.
Logan’s arm reached to grab the boy’s, his grip tight and relentless as he rounded on him, a growl escaping from deep within his chest. “Who the fuck are you?” he asked sternly. “Where’d ya get those? Jeanie, Red... did they do this?” he asked, because the names now were starting to feel familiar. Maybe they were who turned him into this. “Ya got ‘bout five fuckin’ seconds to answer me.”
“You know, those will kill you one day. You’re starting to get old, old man.” It wasn’t much of a surprise, running into Logan here. New York might have been a big place, even in this world. However, his nose was just as good as the other’s and he picked up his scent a while back along with the stench of stale booze and blood along with it. Of course, this scent was close but not quite the same as his father well, the Logan from his Earth.
Jimmy never got to meet Logan, the old man had died before Jimmy had ever known that he was his father. Before he knew the parents that had raised him weren’t actually his parents by blood but were in ever sense that matter. But her, in this world, Logan was alive and his parents, they had no idea who he even was. The thought of it caused him to let out a low and short growl.“You sure you wanna add smoke to the already numerous odors you’re giving off though?”
Logan took a long drag off his cigarette as he half-listened to the young man to his side. Probably some church-goin’ kid who was trying to save his lungs and stop him from sin, Logan reckoned, and if he was: he was wasting his time. He finished his cigarette in two or three silence-filled drags before dropping it to the ground and stepping on it to put it out the rest of the way.
“Get outta my face and go get yer damn diaper changed, ‘specially if yer smellin’ somethin’,” Logan claimed as he walked past the young man with the intention of heading back into the bar, hoping that the brat behind him wasn’t old enough to follow. He wasn’t in the mood to toss some kid against a wall. Maybe tomorrow.
Well, here was a mutant she didn’t think she’d ever see again. She’d know the feeling of his mind anywhere. Wolverine. They’d joined the X-men at the same time- back in the 90s- struck up a friendship. But then he’d vanished before Jean went crazy- years before she went crazy- and Emma hadn’t seen him since. Figured he was just another friend to dump her last minute. Like Astrid. Like everyone else. And now here he was, popping up in New York, at every shitty bar in the city.
She’d been following him, discreetly. Well, as discreetly as Emma Frost could follow someone. She herself wasn’t very discreet, dressed in all white, and usually quite revealing clothing. She didn’t fit in in these dive bars he was choosing- it was quite obvious she was a rich girl who should be in one of the higher class bars with fancy drinks. Which was true- she wouldn’t be caught dead in any of these places. But she’d gone inside every single one- hoping he’d eventually recognize her and tell her where he’d been all this time. It was only a matter of time before she approached him herself.
When he finally did sense her coming, she leaned into the brick wall, crossing her arms. He almost looked in sad shape. She felt kind of bad for him, but the part of her that loved pushing peoples buttons wouldn’t let her feel that for too long.
“I’m surprised you don’t recognize me, darling.” she began, “I’ve been following you all this time and you never once said hello. It’s been, oh- what? Almost twenty years?” Give or take. “I thought we were friends, Logan.”
Logan took another drag off his cigarette, for a moment quietly wishing he had a cigar instead, before he turned his eyes to the young woman before him. She looked way too dolled up for this part of town. A bit seductive, but a street-worker was far from his thoughts when he looked at her. She looked like she was too good to be touched by anyone who could possibly roam around here. Which brought his thoughts back to: what the hell was she doing in a shit-hole like this one?
His whole body tensed at the words that fell between them. Twenty-years ago? And friends? She knew him. He took a sniff of the air around them, hoping that her scent would ignite.. something. That it would bring back even a broken memory, but as always: he got nothing.
Cigarette crushed in his hand, his palm regenerated from the burn before the butt even hit the ground, he pushed off the wall and moved to tower over her. He would have brushed it off, had she not called him Logan. Anyone from the bars only knew him as Wolverine and he liked to keep it that way.
This had to be a joke. Even if couldn’t remember much of anything, he didn’t look like the type her type called friends.
“Who are ya? And, how do ya know me?” he asked, wondering if that’s why this place seemed so familiar and he couldn’t shake it.

For years now, Logan had been chasing his dreams. Unlike most who did that, he wasn’t aiming for his happy-ending, just picking up the pieces for the beginning and middle. He never got much to go off, but sometimes places felt familiar and scoping those places out tended to help him feel... something and that was all he could ever ask for.
And, that’s what he felt around here. New York, he couldn’t remember ever visiting (but remembering wasn’t something he was good at these days), but it seemed every corner-turn he took, something was nagging at him inside. He could have moved on as easy as he always did, but the feeling he tended to get had never been this strong. So, he stuck around, jumping from dive bar to dive bar, fighting for their entertainment for a few nights before he moved onto the next one.
They paid little, but afterwards, he could drink to his heart’s content and that’s really what was important. To a man who had the regenerative system of Logan’s, ‘heart’s content’ usually ran out after the fourth or fifth bottle and he’d find himself kicked out again. Luckily, again, it was New York. The next bar was right around the corner and he had enough money to drink ‘til last call (he hoped).
Before heading inside the next one on the corner, Logan took a moment to stand on the sidewalk (politely away from their business perimeter) for a smoke. Against the brick wall, he struggled with his lighter, not looking up at the person he caught whiff of standing a bit too close to him.
“If yer wantin’ to bum one, move on, this ain’t a damn charity.”
