Cesare, 1000's era boy: "it takes a village to raise a child"
Steve, a space clown: "That's it?"
Cesare: "the fuck do you mean that's it?"
Munkustrap, cheerfully: "well back home it litterally takes a circus to raise a child"
Lmao but anyway clown families concept wherein:
Clowns have a Parent TM which is any clown that outright spawns said New Clown. This is usually one specific singular clown, they are The Parent. No gender on clown planet btw this is any clown that meets specific factors, bam, spontaneous Clown generation occurs. Egg, maybe probably something else, still kinda committed to the "it varies sometimes" thing with Where Baby Clowns Come From.
The Clown Parent will, more than likely, be a part of a group. Clowns naturally move in packs (very mammalian), henceforth referred to as a Family Circus, or just a Family.
As far as clown to Family relations, there are 3 levels (3 rings lmao).
The first ring encompasses "immediate" and usually life long connections. This will usually, more often than not, include the Parent Clown. It will also typically include any other children clowns in the same general age range, potentially the romantic partners of the parent clown, and generally very strong attachments formed in youth.
The second ring follows and is much less significant, but still very family oriented. Where as the closest comparison to ring 1 in humans is "the nuclear family", the closest comparison to a clown's second ring family members is "extended family" and encompasses, generally, everyone the clown in question knows in said family. This is cousins, related and unrelated, aunts and uncles, grandparents, anyone they are connected to personally. If a clown has never met a grandparent, they are very, very unlikely to consider them as part of their second ring family, as the concept of family is more about bond than it is about relation. Clowns sometimes use the term Family Line and Family interchangeably, but in a semantic level, Family Line is intended to refer to genetically related individuals. Clowns rarely care about this distinction, however, and clowns tend to defy this genetic logic anyway (because WHIMSY).
The final ring of the clown's family is.... incredibly flexible. There is a very, very high likelihood that most clowns haven't met the entirety of their Family or Family Line, and furthermore dont know its extent at all. They probably do not even know with clarity where their family starts and a closely related but separate family begins. This is because clown Families tend to change. Clowns are a naturally nomadic and "unattached" people that tend to rotate in and out of families easily, whether to follow best friends, chase after partners, pursue certain aspirations, or just to move on by whim. Clowns that leave a family for another are often considered 3rd-ring family members, although ties are sometimes severed entirely.
On average, a clown born into a family is raised by the circus as a whole. The parent clown is obviously the one responsible for bringing them into this world, and is usually prerequisitely eager and ready for a caregiving role, and their partners are often equally interested in this role. But on the whole, one can rarely predict who else from ones family will bond with and take interest in the care of a child on a deeper level, although it is generally expected that you can relyon anyone in yoyr circus for Babysitting TM.
It is extremely common for maturing but still-juvenile clown offspring to go off on their own to explore other clown families, though fairly often, they tend to return to their original family. Clowns are generally very loose with child rearing on the whole (they are, after all, a magic and impervious species, with child mortality rates being at a whopping Zero)
Anyway all this concept to say "wouldn't it be neat if clowns had huge ass families that look completely different from each individual's angle?" Mixed with "isn't it fascinating to have such a long lived species, but yet they have little to no concept of Permanence on a social or even physical level?"
saw a comment that misspelled “kind gesture” as “kind jester” and am now imagining a beautiful world where we praise good samaritans by calling them kind jesters. good on you, you gentle fool. you’ve made the world a sweeter and sillier place.
(90% Silly but dont look at the other 10% too hard)
Also, Bonus Thomas:
your main characters are:
THOMAS!
-His hair is long. it wont be for long.
-Known as the "Teachers Pet' for Theater Club's leader, Professor Jones. Im sure it's normal.
-For their final Senior Year production, the theater club is performing Cats the Musical, and Thomas has the part of Munkustrap. His life litterally depends on nailing this role (or so he says)
-He's the youngest for once hehe. He doesn't know Cesare is older than him.
-He's "not dating" steve. dont ask about it. but also its very clear they're a thing.
-A+ Student. Favorite Subject is Literature, unless they're doing space sciences.
-Pale and Blotchy and flushes red very easily. Sunburns like hell, too.
-Has extensive college plans, intends to double major and minor, plans for a doctorate, etc etc etc
-Is about to combust on the spot, probably, from stress.
STEVE!
-Currently a short king. wont be for long, he's gunna get huge by the time he's like, 22. He's a late bloomer.
-Big on most hand crafts. Has a new jacket every week, often with painted backs, or new patches, or random embroidery. Also enjoys building things.
-Used to be in a robotics club and in workshop. Cut back so he could focus on Theater Club (for thomas) and Home Ec (he's a teaching assistant the now, yay, he loves cooking)
-Facial scars. Was raised in a cult. Dont ask about it.
-emancipated minor recently turned adult; lives alone on subsidy.
-doesnt really know what he wants to do after graduation.
-straightening his hair right now. He's just as curly and wavy as Thomas naturally. it's just a phase, frankly.
-more aware of everyone's issues than they all think. He's supportive how he can be.
-Way more anxious than he's letting on.
CESARE!
-New to the school. Recently transferred, banned from his old school.
-Rumor has it he killed a teacher. Don't ask about it.
-Currently in a halfay home situation, aging out of foster care.
-Joins the theater club at the new school and immediately decides he doesn't like the teacher for no reason at all. Rapidly starts to form a coup.
-Frances and Conrad (freshmen) are already in the theater group, and join Cesare's coup basically immediately. Billy, Tim, and Penny (also freshman) are in Steve's Home Ec Club; when Thomas starts spiraling about losing three performers, Steve rallies his own troops into joining the theater club too.
-Allen, who attends another school (Cesare's old school, freshman) starts showing up to the theater club too. Anyone who tries to argue he can't join the production because he doesn't go here gets threatening looks.
-Cryptid Nerd Maximum. WILL be caught ghost hunting at 4am in abandoned properties. fully believes in aliens. would talk about it more but doesnt trust people wont mock him so he's Very Aggressive about it.
-also big on art and joined an art club along side theater.
-Failed his Junior year once already. He had a lot of reasons.
-Has tentative plans to drop out at the end of the current school year, will be his last school year anyway.
-Big Rivalry is with Thomas instead of Steve. He and steve basically buddy up the instant they're left alone together, they get along and have a lot in common.
-Cesare is not having a great time. At all. but! no one needs to know he's on the verge of a meltdown every fucking day, thank you. If things don't go his way, he's on the cusp of some very drastic actions.
It would be funny if Steve said he had to "cut back" and eat healthily but for clowns that's just awful awful food. High sugar deserts and high fat deep fried bullshit.
Can't have burgers tho. So he's eating cake with a tear in his eye
