Remembering Monique Snowden and The Chilli Man
Horse racing stirs a lot of very strong emotions in us. Washington based trainer Monique Snowden is said to have been very emotional, and became depressed years ago when her mother died of cancer. With the death of her trainee The Chilli Man on July 17, she was devastated and may have faced a despair so deep she could not bear it again. She was found the next day having apparently committed suicide.
We’ll remember Monique for her love of horses and horse racing, and her deep emotions. The story is a reminder that the people in the industry are just as real and vulnerable as the rest of us, and some are fighting their own inner battles like those of us who can only dream of the things they do. We want to see them all pull through, they’re part of us and one of us.

Lani update: Targeting Champions Cup, 2017 Dubai World Cup and Breeders Cup
This older video may be in Japanese, but you can’t miss that big bad grey (#15), Lani ( ラニ ), who became the third-place closer in this year’s G1 Belmont Stakes. He has been back in Japan and is in training as he finishes a 90-day quarantine. According to owner Koji Maeda, Lani’s goal for the second half of the year is the G1 Chukyo’s G1 Champions Cup (formerly known as the Japan Cup Dirt) on December 4, likely preceded by a prep race. In 2017 Lani will target some of the biggest races with the G1 Dubai World Cup at Meydan, and G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic which will be at Del Mar. Lani is likely to also run a prep for both of those races in Dubai and the US.
But wait, there’s more. We may get to see another Lani take on the Triple Crown crown series. Koji Maeda says Lani’s younger brother will be trained by an American trainer. Maeda previously had success with Sunday Break trained by Neil Drysdale in the US. Sunday Break won the G2 Peter Pan Stakes and finished third in the G1 Belmont and GI Wood Memorial.
Good luck to Lani and Maeda. We will miss Lani and his team over here at this year’s Breeders’ Cup.

American Freedom Iowa Derby 2016 Replay
Friday night at Prairie Meadows Bob Baffert took down another Iowa Derby, this time with favored American Freedom. The three horses that vied pretty equally for second choice filled out the superfecta, with multiple stakes winner Texas Chrome finishing second. American Freedom won by 4 ¾ lengths under a hand ride with Rafael Bejarano up in the 1/16 mile grade three race. Looks like he should try another move up in class from here.
Yes, it won’t be long until American Freedom makes a patriotic music video like this one…

This mare got her claim to fame by becoming unbeaten in 17 races as a three year old, earning $1.54 million that year. Her winning time in the Miller Memorial at Meadowlands at 1:51 was the fastest mile ever by a three year old trotter filly.
Bee A Magician was named 2013 Horse of the Year by the U.S. Harness Writers Association, becoming the first three year old trotter filly to win the award since Continentalvictory in 1996. She was also named 2013 Trotter of the Year.
