@yugimew hereâs to you!
A cold breeze woke Sylvia. She curled up into a tighter ball, trying to ignore the chill. It was almost dawn. Too early to be up and about.
Ever the early riser, Wander was busy dragging firewood into the cave. The constant scrap of bark again stone drove Sylvia to her feet.
She stood up, yawning. âCanât you give it a rest for five minutes? The sunâs not up yet.â
âWell, good morning to you, too.â Wander looked up, smiling, from the cumbersome branch he was struggling to drag along. It was so big, it looked like a small tree. âSorry to wake you. I know itâs early. Iâm trying to get ready.â
âFor what?â Sylvia wiped sleep from her eyes. âWhatever it is, canât it wait another three hours?â
Wander blinked sympathetically. âSorry, no can do. Itâs gettinâ colder by the second out there. Bad weatherâs coming.â
âBad weather?âSylvia pushed past him and squinted at up the sky. It was an unbroken sheet of gray. A solid bank of clouds stretched from horizon to horizon. âAre you sure?â
âPositive,â Wander grunted. He pulled on the branch. âTrust me, Sylvia. Itâll be here soon enough.â
âLet me help you, buddy.â Sylvia hefted the huge branch across her shoulder and added to the pile stashed at the back of the cave.
âThanks,â Wander puffed. He sat down on his heels and wiped his face.
Sylvia shook her head, gesturing at the huge pile. âLook at all this wood. How long have you been gathering?â
âNot long. About an hour. Maybe.â
âJust how bad is this weather supposed to be? Why donât we just leave?â
Wander shook his head violently. âNo! We have to stay!â
âSylvia, itâs a tradition. We have to stay and watch the first snowfall.â
Sylvia cloud not believe what sheâd just heard. âSnow? Really? Itâs way too early in the season! How can you be so sure?â
It was too good to be true. Snow was her favorite. Snow many crisp air. Warm food. Good times all around.
A grin split her snout. âYou planned this.â
The huge smile on his face was a dead giveaway. âMaybeâŚâ
She noogied him affectionately. âThatâs why you wanted to come here! Snow always comes early to this part of the galaxy.â
Wander patted her back. âYep! No better way to welcome the season!â
Another gust of air blew into the cave mouth. Colder this time. Much colder. There was a bite to the breeze. The first taste of a frozen promise.
Almost quivering with excitement, Sylvia dragged Wander outside. She rocked back and forth on her heels, staring intently at the sky.
âCome on, come on,â she whispered. âHurry up and snow already!â
She stuck out her tongue. A single snowflake fell. Then another. And another. Soon the air was thick with swirling white. Sylvia threw back her head, trying to catch an elusive flurry.
Wander laughed. âHappy first day of winter, Syl!â
