SAVANNAH’S STORY
If there’s one person in the world who Savannah aspires to be like, who her biggest inspiration is, it’s her mom. Holly might not always be around, but when she is, Savannah will soak up all of the attention she can from her, and she loves her more than anybody or anything. Savannah likes to think that Holly is her best friend, because that’s what the older woman acts like. She’s more a friend to her children than a mother, and rather than be upset by it, Savannah embraces it.
Raised mainly by nannies and her grandparents, Savannah’s head was always in the clouds. She has one hell of a set of pipes on her, and could sing like a pro from as far back as anyone could remember. She’s a rock and roll baby, obsessed with the likes of Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and Metallica just to name a few. Rock has always been her style, and the drums are her instrument of choice. Before she was even old enough to play, she would drum on any and every surface she could. Her toys were rarely played with the way they should be, and instead she’d just beat them to make music. As soon as she was old enough, her grandparents enrolled her in drum classes, alongside guitar.
Savannah was that little girl sitting by the window at eight in the morning with her jacket on and bag packed whenever Holly said she was coming home at eleven to take her out for the day, and would stay hopeful even after eleven had been and gone with no sign of her. She’d sit there all day long, telling her grandparents she’d be here, then would make up an excuse for her when evening came and there was still no Holly. All her mother had to do was call a couple days later with an excuse and Savannah would instantly forgive her.
Named after the city in which she was conceived, Savannah always wondered why her mother, from Lima Ohio, had been in Savannah Georgia. Holly’s story was that she was touring with a famous band, a member of which was Savannah’s father. She never gave her his name, but that was fine. It meant Savannah could leave it up to her wild imagination, and to this day stands by the belief that her father is a famous rockstar, just like she plans to be.
Apparently her mother wasn’t a huge fan of children, because when Savannah reached sixteen, Holly started coming around more than she had done throughout her childhood. She was a very irresponsible parent, but that never mattered to Savannah, who would always take her mother’s side when she’d hear her grandparents telling her she wasn’t allowed to just come and go from the children’s lives, and when they told her she couldn’t take Savannah on the road with her for the summer, Savannah flipped out. She eventually got her way, as she usually did.
It became something of a tradition for Savannah to spend summers with her mother since then. She would look forward to being on the road throughout the entire school year, then when summer would come, she’d pack her bags and Holly would come to pick her up for their new summer adventure. Savannah would always come back with a new haircut, crazy hair color, or more recently, a tattoo.
There was never any point in trying to get her to go down a “practical” route as far as a career. Savannah had always dreamed of being a famous rockstar like her unnamed father, and enrolled in Iowa State to major in music so that she could walk the path she wanted. Iowa may seem random, but it was a place she visited on her road trip with Holly and a place they both loved. She’s only in her freshman year but Savannah is loving college life. She tells all of her new friends stories about her famous father and her wonderful best friend mother; even going as far as having them all call her Holly - Her middle name; just another thing that has Savannah convincing herself she’s close to her estranged, frankly deadbeat mother.
