Savannah comes from a big family. Sheâs the second youngest of five kids and the only girl. It was pretty clear her father never really wanted a daughter, and Savannah found herself in a complicated situation. Her father would only pay attention to her when it was to yell at her for not having a cold beer ready for him when he got home from work. If Savannah wasnât being of use to him and helping her mother do the âonly things they were good forâ she was invisible to the man.Â
!!! TRIGGER WARNING: slight mention of physical violence/abuse !!!
Savannahâs father is a big, loud, overbearing man and what he says goes. Her mother was too afraid to stand up to him and most of her brothers didnât care enough. But Savannah was rebellious and opinionated, and she wouldnât be treated like lesser than because of her gender. She and her father argued a lot about the way he treated her and her mother, and one night he drunkenly lost his temper and hit her. She was only fourteen years old and while her father had hoped the incident would whip her into line it only made her more willing to go to war with him.Â
Savâs oldest brother Anthony, whoâd been pretty silent about everything up until that night, had started looking out for her more. Heâd try to comfort her when Dad would go on one of his tirades and had even offered to teach her how to fight, hoping that beating on a punching bag would help her deal with some of her anger and pain. Anthony became her favorite person in the house, and at times she feels like heâs the only one she actually liked. When heâd go hang out with his friends heâd let Sav tag along.Â
Her family wasnât well off by any means. Her father didnât make a lot of money and her mom babysat kids around town for some extra money. There were too many mouths to feed and not enough to go around, and Savannah can only imagine that the financial burden and stress helped make her father the way he was. Not that it was any excuse. Anthony, being the oldest, was forced to help out any way he could because thatâs what a man does according to their father. He ended up dropping out of high school and got a job working for a mechanic to help support their parents. Naturally Sav began hanging around the old shop as well, because wherever Anthony goes she does.Â
The owner of the shop was a nice older man who took pity on the Wrides kids, so he would be pretty lenient when Anthony would have to leave work early to deal with his siblings or help his parents. When Savannah showed an interest in cars the man even fed her curiosity and taught her everything he could.Â
Their father lost his job when Savannah was sixteen and things in the Wrides household changed drastically. With her father around more Savannah found the attention sheâd wanted all this time was suffocating. He constantly criticized the way she dressed, the people she hung out with and the thing she was allowed to do.Â
With the financial burden placed on her mother and older brothers until dad could find another job, Savannah saw first hand how desperation could push people into making decisions that would alter their lives forever. Theyâd never had it easy money wise before but now Anthony had too much to hold up on his own. Heâd stopped showing up for his shifts at work and had gotten pretty distant with his siblings. No one else questioned the change in his behavior, chalked it up to him finding a new job that demanded more of his time because no matter how absent he was, there was always money for groceries and bills now. Savannah knew something was off and followed her brother one day just to see what the deal was. She learned heâd started hanging out with some of the criminals around the island and had even begun a betting ring on the illegal street races. Between the profits from betting and helping his new friends rob the very business owners whoâd looked out for their family, Anthony was providing for the Wrides.Â
Savannah tried to bring it to her parentsâ attention, concerned for her brotherâs safety but her father didnât seem to care very much. Her mother expressed worry as well but ultimately decided that Anthony was strong enough to take care of himself. Trying to reason with Anthony didnât help her much either and her brother assured there was no risk in what he was doing.Â
To prove a point Savannah decided to enter one of the races, âborrowingâ her dadâs car. If the crowd he was hanging out with was âno riskâ then he wouldnât care if his baby sister got involved, right? She lost that first race but it was enough to wake something inside her. Racing gave her a rush unlike anything sheâd ever experienced. She was a pretty rebellious and reckless teenager, skipping school, sneaking into bars and smoking in alley ways to get some sense of freedom from her overbearing father. But racing was different. She canât explain it but it was the feeling sheâd been looking for this whole time. Anthony was pretty pissed off and her dad went into one of his fits when they got home with his car, but it didnât even matter.Â
Savannah kept sneaking out and entering the races and there was nothing her parents or Anthony could do to stop her. Over time she got better and started earning some money from it. Sheâd even begun to make friends with some of those same people she was concerned about her brother being around. They werenât big evil people like society had originally expected her to believe, they were actually pretty cool and way more fun than her lame high school friends who thought getting high in the gym was peak rule breaking. Savannah quickly went from in trouble with teachers to in trouble with cops. It didnât matter though, something about running from the police was exciting. And doing the things she was doing now she was making more money than her father ever had, and she was spiteful enough to want to rub it in the manâs face that the big earner of the household was the same kid heâd thought was lesser than.
Savannahâs grades had never been good, but they certainly plummeted now that she was spending less time studying and more time breaking the law. Her mother, sweet as she was, began to worry about her little girl and her father made it clear that she was not to be living her life like this. Which was rich considering there was no problem when it was Anthony. Her parents looked into putting her through one of those scared straight programs, hoping hearing prison horror stories would knock some sense into her but all it did was teach Savannah that she just had to be careful to not get caught. She had to be smarter and faster and better than them.Â
One night the cops busted one of the races and Sav and her friends managed to get away just fine, but Anthony hadnât been so lucky. With her brother in jail life in the Wrides house got even harder for Savannah. She was feeling guilty enough as it is, but it didnât help that her brothers and father put all the blame on her as if Anthony wasnât a grown man capable of making his own decisions. Her fatherâs anger reached new heights and shortly after graduating high school Savannah decided she just couldnât live under his roof anymore. Hell, she couldnât live in Corona anymore. She packed her things, gathered up whatever money she had and hit the road.Â
Savannah found herself in Los Angeles with no place to stay, no friends and no family to hold her back. A few months of working at a skeevy bar that didnât really do a decent, yet alone thorough, background check and sheâd heard whispers of a street racing circuit in the city of angels. Well, the rest is kind of history. She made her name known, found her crew, and life was golden.Â
She did some stunt double work here and there but her main source of income was always the racing. But you canât put illegal street racing on a resume, now can you?
Her mom kept in contact with her the entire time she was away, and Sav also called and wrote to her brother whenever she could. Theyâre the only people in her family she feels a real closeness to. Â
In addition to her injury, Shank only came home because her brother would finally be getting released from jail on good behavior.Â
