the way that sawyer reacted startled him. sure, he had seen his friend upset before, even enraged, but it was never directed toward chardon. he kind of took a step back, his face became a mix of sadness and anger. “fine, go ahead move on. go find your check.” he answered quietly, not being able to find any other words. he didn’t really want to accept the apology, but he figured he’d offer something. “let me know if you’d want to go out for a drink sometime. after you feel better.”

witnessing chardon’s reaction ... it caused a pang of guilt as sawyer knew that he was reacting in the poorest way possible. but it was the only way he knew how, and no one seemed to expect any different from him so what did it truly matter? “how refreshing, i was expecting more of a fight.” the brunette said with a huff, running his fingers through his hair as he took a moment to breathe, maybe even calm down as he knew chardon wasn’t deserving of his anger. “you’ll be waiting a lifetime, then, pal. don’t think i’ll ever be feeling better,” his dark hues met char’s, shrugging, before offering some sad excuse of a lopsided smile, “so i’ll take that drink whenever you’re free.”

“yeah, i know.” his response was automatic; there was no introduction needed, and yet it felt like it was necessary. sawyer hadn’t seen lauren in years and certainly never expected her to be here of all places. his mind was racing a mile a minute, so much so that he nearly forgot where he was or how many birthdays he’d celebrated. “like i could ever forget you ...” his tone was calm, voice nearly hoarse, his brows narrowing as he really got a good look at the girl before him. “what the hell are you doing here, dev?”

babe’s arms circled the boy and sawyer’s only response came from his muscles tensing from the contact. it was an unexpected gesture, but one he didn’t realize he needed as much as he did until it was too late and he was reciprocating, pulling her into a tight enough hug with his arms around her shoulders. it was as if, even for a moment, he could lower his walls and let in some genuine care from someone he considered to be a close friend. his hold loosened as she spoke up once again. “it’s pretty damn permanent, babe ... i’m fucked.” his tone was soft, gaze too as he looked past her shoulder towards the floor with a lopsided frown, “it’s over.”

yes, sawyer knew chardon was only expressing his concern for a friend, and yes, he knew that he shouldn’t get angry over that. but he didn’t need to hear what or wasn’t his life from someone else in that moment. “you think i don’t fucking know that, chardon?!” he spat, his expression very clearly reading anger despite the pain it caused. “you’re right - it’s my whole fucking life. and no - there’s not a damn thing they can do to help me or put me back on that damn field. so if you don’t mind, i’d like to move on from idealist hypotheticals and focus on finding my fucking check.” he let out a breath, finally having taken one, and swallowed hard as he squeezed his eyes shut; there was some remorse in his tone now. “it’s been a shit week ... sorry.”

He couldn’t help but grimace at the picture that was now painted at the possibility of hurting yourself in over-doing it. The other made it sound like it was coming from experience, causing him to make sure to keep all that he was being told in mind. He didn’t know the brunet all that much but he seemed to know what he was talking about. Hearing Sawyer’s exclamation to yoga, the older male playfully lifted his arms up defensively, letting out a soft chuckle and a small smirk paint his features. “Damn, alright, alright. I respect that. How many days a week would ya recommend I do it? Yanno, if I wanted to get into that.” Realizing how little he knew about all of this, Jamie began to wonder if he should invest in a personal trainer or maybe just head out with someone else who knew what they were doing. “…You down to have someone else join you while you’re pullin’ some weights? You seem to have this whole thing figured out and honestly, I don’t trust myself to remember any of this stuff.” He admitted, bashfully scratching the back of his neck.

it was impossible to suppress sawyer’s gruff laugh in response to jamie’s inquisition regrading yoga, like it was deserving of secrecy. “it’s alright, man, you can say the word ‘yoga’ outloud and no one’s gonna call you out on it,” he smirked, shaking his head, “but plenty of professionals do it daily - yanno, in the morning before coffee and shit. supposed to be wicked good for that whole mind, body, spirit cohesion.” he shrugged, knowing full well that he should get better at practicing what he preaches when it comes to that principle alone. it was jamie’s next question that caught him a little off guard, simply because they weren’t all too close, but sawyer always had a hard time passing up a gym bud. “yeah, it is a lot of shit to take in all at once,” he found himself laughing again, “you should come along, i’m up at the gym pretty damn early every morning but i also like to pull night reps occasionally too - so pick your poison, it’s a hell of a lot easier when you’ve got someone there to pump you up.”
