“did i miss the part where you put sunscreen on in slow mo? cause that’s my favorite part.” laurie bit her lip to hide a proud grin, always eager to get a reaction from him. “hm? oh yeah, burgers, right.“ laur was normally all about food that would never grace her parents kitchen but a girl could only have so many burgers. she climbed up the first rung of the lifeguard’s chair to get closer to sawyer “or... i have some ramen stashed in my cabin, if you’re interested.“ she whispered as if it were anything worth keeping secret.

sure, it had been a while since the pair had last seen each other, but she looked different. less pristine or fine-pressed, as her parent’s preferred her; the lauren before him was one that he found himself to be most familiar with and even still, it was different. he let out a huff of a laugh at her mentioning his eye, which he sheepishly looked down to the floor once he remembered just how hellish he must have looked; it was not the image of himself he had painted in his mind if the day ever came where their paths crossed again. “none taken, don’t even feel like myself lately.” he admitted, a tinge of sadness in his voice despite the lopsided grin he took up as he brought his gaze back onto hers. “ah, but some things never change do they.” he started, nodding his head towards the poster she was hanging up advertising her musical tutoring services, and naturally that’s, mostly, what he was referring to. “yeah, been here for more than a year now. can’t say i ever expected to see you in chicago, let along here in this shithole … don’t tell me you’re slumming it down here with the best of us?” he was teasing, the smirk gave that away.

before leaving her nicer more expensive apartment she applied the konmari method to her belongings and accidentally went crazy with her hair products. she didn’t plan on restocking until she was fully settled but that left her with less than luscious locks when meeting her ex. laurie’s brows furrowed at his less than chipper tone “well that’s not good to hear.” before she could ask about the abrasion he changed the subject swiftly. “i guess not, i mean i’d hope not after all that tuition money you’d hope something would stick.”  she chuckled returning the flyer she had offered, when she didn’t recognize him, back onto the pile. “I first moved here three months ago... to be in the chicago symphony orchestra, but like i said i needed a change.” she quickly tried to change the subject with a perky smile “hey what are you doing now? we can grab coffee and catch up, these flyers can wait.”

“yeah, i know.” his response was automatic; there was no introduction needed, and yet it felt like it was necessary. sawyer hadn’t seen lauren in years and certainly never expected her to be here of all places. his mind was racing a mile a minute, so much so that he nearly forgot where he was or how many birthdays he’d celebrated. “like i could ever forget you …” his tone was calm, voice nearly hoarse, his brows narrowing as he really got a good look at the girl before him. “what the hell are you doing here, dev?”

the familiar voice struck a nerve for the small girl, she looked up into the man’s eyes for the first time since they entered the room, beyond the bruised skin was a pair of hazel brown eyes she once considered home. “sawyer?” she murmured with a chuckle. she was conflicted whether to be happy or concerned, there were a thousand and one other emotions in the back of her mind but those two were at the forefront. she quickly brushed down her hair all of the sudden feeling bare and indecent at his kind and nearly solemn words. “in my defense you don’t exactly look like yourself” she vaugly referred to his eye, not sure if it was topic for this particular moment. “i’m well-” how does she explain dropping out of a symphony and practically throwing away her harvard life to become a music tutor. “i needed a change... apparently it wasn’t big enough.” she smiled tucking an unstyled piece of hair behind her ear. “do you live here?”

Arlo took a look at the paper once she handed it over, raising his brows in delight once her read it over before looking back up at the other. “Damn, do you really play all of these? That’s rad as hell! I’m lucky to even know piano guitar and drums.” He snorted before grinning at her introduction, and offering a clumsy bow with hand gesture. “I’m Arlo! It’s nice to meet you!”

lauren smiled nodding humbly at his question “hey a fellow musician! oh please one instrument is really enough i’m just an over achiever” she chuckled holding the papers against her arm and body. “likewise, and i like your name arlo, it’s super cool.” she tilted her head graciously.

lauren was taping a poster advertising her tutoring services next to the mailboxes in the lobby when someone she could only assume was a new neighbor walked in. “i’m uh about to start posting these around the neighborhood,thought this might be a good place to start.” she explained offering a poster and friendly smile “hi, i’m lauren, i just moved in.“

  ( lauren devineaux + cis female ) sure looks a lot like ( haley lu richardson ) ! they were born ( twenty two ) years ago and blow out their candles on ( july 22nd ). ( she ) just moved in, and they seem pretty ( reliable & sweet ), but they’re also ( privileged & forgetful ) on occasion. they love to ( play & listen to music ) when they aren’t working as a ( gelato scooper ) at Malnati’s Pizzeria & Gelato Shop. you can find them in apartment ( 502 )

laur is a boston native privileged smol child, she’s not mean by any capacity but can be a little naive at times.

she graduated from harvard school of music, she’s a band geek if like that geek was also head cheerleader.

she’s played violin for many orchestras, including the chicago symphony orchestra which is why she’s here... and not in boston

however deciding that going back to her roots and becoming a music tutor is what she really wants to do with her time. she prefers working with kids but has students of all ages and she teaches guitar, ukulele, cello, violin, trumpet, trombone, french horn and her fave of course piano

besides that handful of instruments she also knows how to play the accordion and harmonica which makes ten total her life’s brightest achievement.

as rewarding as being a tutor is it’s not the best paying job and laurie’s too independent to take her parent’s hand outs so she moved to a new building with a roommate to help pay for rent

while she’s very musically inclined she can’t sing for shit

she loves musicals both movie and live and they always bring up her mood like she uses any small inconvenience as an excuse to cuddle up with chinese take out and watch a musical and you’re very welcome to join her but she might be spouting trivia the whole time

loves podcasts dislikes most tv shoes (friends, charmed, buffy, the nanny and sex in the city are the biggest exceptions)

she’s sawyer’s ex from massachusetts, they were pretty hot and heavy but after a few years she was expecting a proposal and he wasn’t willing to give her that so they went their separate ways
