“i’d vote for a cat,” sawyer admitted, shrugging slightly, “i guess it makes sense that i’d vote for a raccoon then, too. but i’m totally with you on the environmental stuff—shit needs to change, you know?”

it’s just tomato juice, sawyer’s encouraging cheering diminished into muffled yelling. aaron stared down at the mix—no, the juice, before taking in a deep breath. “alrigh—okay, i’m,” he throws his head back, eyes shutting painfully as he gulped down a mouthful of—aaron starts coughing, the atrocious flavour of milk, orange juice, ketchup, tabasco and something else filling his mouth and senses. head jerking to the side, aaron slides the mug towards sawyer, too focused in trying to get rid of the aftertaste to speak.

sawyer practically screamed when aaron took the leap and drank at least some of the concoction he’d created for their pleasure. he could hardly believed he’d been able to actually talk someone into drinking the thing, but the sound of aaron’s coughing told him he wasn’t dreaming. “how was it?” he probed, shit-eating grin on his face, “was it as fuckin’ delicious as it looks?”

“Are you physically capable of having fun right now?” Fawn asked, amused. “Your arms are entirely out of commission. It limits our options by a fairly substantial amount. The games are completely off limits, for example.”

“the lady at the stall offered me a plastic bag but, like, i’d rather not be responsible for the world dying, you know?” sawyer said, lips pursed as he tried to think of an alternative. he wanted to do and see everything, and while his snacks were important too, they were kind of getting in the way. “you think one of these vendors is selling bags or old lady shopping trolleys or something?” he asked, head nodding in the direction of the stalls lining cape hazel.

“Should we get them laser removed together? Would that be romantic?” Solomon laughed as he took an enormous bite from his own cotton candy, right off the stick. Threads of sugar clung between his mouth and the fuzzball as he munched. “I don’t know, it is kind of weird. But I don’t really know what to do with a mayor who isn’t talking shit about me on the web. How will we engage? How will it feel like they’re more than just a mayor?”

“i think that’d be more painful than romantic, babe,” he said, reaching over to steal a pinch of the cotton candy solomon was munching on. he nodded as solomon answered his questions, thoughts and head in the clouds. “yeah, i don’t know how i’d survive without the person governing me calling me boring every two seconds,” he laughed, “i got so used to it that i think i tricked myself into thinking that it meant he liked me.”

“what should we check out first?” sawyer asked as they walked, mind and arms occupied with the treats he’d just loaded up on at one of the many stalls the businesses of cape hazel had to offer. “let’s do something fun.”

“Are you excited to find out who the new mayor’s gonna be? I’ll be honest, I was a Zeff fan, but as long as his replacement isn’t a murderer, then they’ll probably be all right,” Solomon chuckled. He had his hands in his pockets as they walked the festival.

“our tattoos are kind of unfortunate now that’s he’s, like, a whole killer or whatever,” sawyer said with a laugh, though the topic wasn’t all that funny. the fact that he and solomon were stuck with these tattoos forever, though? that was kinda hilarious. “i don’t mind who takes over, though. do you think the new person will take up the blog? keep the weird tradition going?” he pondered, shoving a blob of cotton candy in his mouth as he posed the questions.

Last year a festival followed her arrival in the cape and now another one fell on the one year mark. A lot of things happened some good some bad, (the burning of her favorite restaurant still stung) but she’d do it all again (except losing Around The Clock) Eva had actually had time to make things to sell during the festival. “I wonder if hiring someone to run a vendor table for me would be a thing to do in short notice… I have way too many trinkets I haven’t sold yet…”

sawyer had been hanging out near eva’s booth for a while now, mainly for moral support as she sold her stuff but also because he was just exhausted from a day jam-packed with activities. his feet were sore and his eyes were fighting to stay open, but it sounded like eva needed some help, and he was always happy to do so. “i can man the booth for a while if you wanna go out and see the sights,” he offered, “i’m, like, not terrible at maths so you should get all your correct change back.”

“That’s a good point, maybe his vice president is who we should be looking into.” Maia thought. “Also it’ll be adorable if the blog posts are gibberish.

“imagine him typing with his little raccoon hands,” sawyer said, letting out a loud laugh. he wasn’t sure how his train of thought had started on politics and ended on the overall cuteness of big jimothy, but whatever. the little dude was adorable.

sawyer’s social media pages are love letters to the people in his life. he’s always leaving nice comments on their posts, captioning his own posts with the things he admires about his friends, and is always letting the world know just how in love he is. he’s all about spreading kindness on platforms he’s seen so much hate on, wanting to help create positive changes wherever he goes. he posts covers of songs he loves and his own stuff, too, though doing so makes him nervous sometimes.

“We can kill a whole day, easy, if they do,” Fawn pointed out. “Some top tier escapism there. The shows I used to go to didn’t start until around midnight, but I’m sure whatever they have start earlier. Again, assuming they have anything. There really could be nothing. We might have to initiate this rebrand ourselves.”

“i’m ready to take over a whole town and completely turn it around if you are,” sawyer joked, looking out the window as they finally began arriving at their destination. as far as he could see, it looked pretty similar to home, but much like cape hazel, he was sure there were some weird and wonderful secrets to uncover throughout town. “where should we start?”

Solomon turned on his side, skimming a hand through Sawyer’s hair as he spoke. “Yeah, like, how did they even get his platform, to be honest? What I want to know is who’s actually running the show, then maybe I’d vote for them. But I do want to know more about their conservation plans. Maybe we should go to a press conference or something.”

sawyer leant into solomon’s touch gently as he thought about cape hazel politics some more, nodding along with his boyfriend’s points. “i mean, if the platforms good, i guess whoever’s ghostwriting for a fucking raccoon must be a good person, right?” he reasoned, scrolling through his phone once again in search of election news and events they could attend. “says here he’s dedicated to preserving the wildlife and beaches of cape hazel,” he read, “and that there’s a press conference about his plans tonight.”

dominic raised his eyebrows. “oh, shit, i heard about that actually. it was on the news in california; the whole thing with hope? so sad.” he thought for a moment. “big jim, though? are people actually voting for a raccoon?”

“oh, shit, really?” sawyer asked, brows raised in surprise, “i sometimes forget that this town doesn’t, like, exist in a vacuum. it never really occurred to me that cape hazel news would reach places outside of maine, you know?” he laughed when dominic inquired about big jimothy and his votes, though, nodding slightly. “i think he’s a favorite to win, actually,” he said, checking the blog again, constantly in need of updates about this election.

“eugh. same, honestly.” she said, grimacing. resting her chin in her hands, bea hummed and shrugged. “i voted for big jimothy.” she said, tipping her head up to watch the sky for a moment. “i felt a little silly voting for a raccoon, but like. i like the platform, y’know?”

sawyer nodded with understanding when bea revealed who she was voting for. only in cape hazel would voting a wild animal into office seem reasonable, but he was used to this little, wacky town now. “i’m thinking big jim, too, to be honest,” he said, “i, like, feel stupid about it, but that little face gets me every time.”

“In this political climate, a literal raccoon is better than a scam artist. I’d vote for a trash can if they’d allowed it.” Maia stated unapologetically. “And obviously a human has to run it since he doesn’t understand why people want socialism.”

“true again,” sawyer said with a laugh, “but will we, like, get to know the human behind him? how do we know we can trust that person? i’m still leaning towards big jim because i adore the little guy, though.”

“If it’s not fully themed, we’re leaving,” Fawn corrected sternly before smiling. “We can get a picture with the sign. Reasonably speaking, we can’t be the first people to have brought this up. Right? They’d have to have, like, some kind of local theater with a display or something. I’m sure we’ll find something interesting.”

“like, at the very least,” sawyer emphasised, his excited about this new cape building more and more. he was thrilled to be out and exploring with fawn, the potential for some rocky horror themed adventures only sweetening the deal. “maybe they’ll have, like, a production or something,” he said, “that’d be fun.”

the ‘alright, fine,’ was slipping out of aaron’s lips before he knew it. worrying his bottom lip between his teeth, aaron took a sniff of the drink (???), gagging at the smell. “i could smell the orange juice—and, uh, did you put in tabasco?” aaron was intentionally prolonging the conversation with irrelevant questions—he shouldn’t have agreed to this. “i hate tabasco.” aaron took in a deep breath, “alright. okay. okay. let’s do this. come on. you can do this, aaron, it’s just tomato juice,” he whispered to himself.

sawyer couldn’t help but grin when aaron noted the hint of tabasco in the concoction he’d created, a confirmation even if he wouldn’t say so in words. he watched then as aaron hyped himself up for the dare, then, the anticipation building with each passing second. “yeah, you can do this! it’s just tomato juice!” he said, cheering him on in the background as best as he could.
