she smoked now ? oh, for fuck’s  .  .  . “ so you’re trying to kill yourself now, huh ? ” he said, mockingly gesturing to her cigarette as she had gestured to him and his shit place of employment. this town was so fucking small; he couldn’t even get a second to breathe ( or suck up three inches of cancerous chemicals, rather ). taking a drag, as if on cue, benji let his leg drop from the wall, his body moving slightly ( but not too dangerously ) close to hers as a cloud of smoke followed behind. “ why don’t you just admit you walked by here — at this time, on this day of the fuckin’ week — because you knew i’d be standing outside, smoking a cig, like i always do. just admit it, s. you couldn’t fucking shake this even if you tried. ”

serena rolled her eyes, tugging at her sleeve defensively as she held the cig in her mouth, spattering out words. “no, dumbass. it takes off the edge.” she shrugged, placing the cancer stick in her left hand. “you should know something about that.” she said, getting dangerously suggestive, pointing a finger at him. her eyes followed his as he stepped closer, just begging to provoke a reaction from her. while her breathing hitched very slightly, she stood like a marble statue; tall, cold, and unaffected. listening to his comment, she threw the cigarette to the ground, stepping on it like a bug. “so now i can’t just go for a walk at night time in my /own/ city because it’s the night you work on? that’s funny.” she said sarcastically, ponytail bouncing as her attitude heightened. it was very much an obvious lie, of course she walked here hoping to see him. but she’d never admit that in a million years to feed his ego.

     “It’s perfectly acceptable to have a beer… or ten… on a Wednesday night, right?” West asked, trying to convince himself that it was okay as his fingers toyed with a six pack, debating whether or not he should put it back.

“I mean, I guess if you can take the hangover next morning.” Serena commented, quite amused by the very prospect of West getting wasted.

     It certainly wasn’t the first time he’d chased a girl off with his commentary on literature that often bordered on a little too passionate, but it didn’t dull the sting of her sudden change of tune. She wanted out. 

     “Certainly,” he replied. “Favorites are subjective, of course. You ask my students what their favorites are and they are usually not Wordsworth or Pope. Kind’ve a freak’ve nature, me.” A single hand ran over his face, stretching his skin and distorting his flushed face. 

      “Nah, I got it,” he insisted, reaching for his wallet. “So you teach?”

“yeah, ninth graders. how about you?” she asked, raising an eyebrow. as she put away her wallet in surrender, she took in a breath and exhaled. this conversation was getting old, and although she liked a challenging debate serena had far more important things to do these days; like grade exam papers. not to say that papers were more important than west, but they were her focal point really. plus, she wanted to prove him wrong about the whole spiel of kids not enjoying romeo and juliet. the paper she assigned was on that topic, actually. treding lightly, she cleared her throat to ask another question. “and are you a l w a y s this charming?” she quizzed, undertones of sarcasm in her voice. he was attractive, but s only had eyes for one. this meeting wasn’t a bad idea, but it wasn’t her greatest either to go on okcupid and try to meet someone through the internet.

serena was always so quick to avoid conflict that in some respects it bugged olivia to no end, but then she had to appreciate it; perhaps if she were as cool as her blonde counterpart, conflict within her life would be of a significantly less amount. “work. smoke. repeat.” it was the same as her regular days; summer vacation for the kids meant nothing to liv. she still had to earn that living and such. "as soon as school finishes for england i’ll probably go visit my mom. but other than that.. irritating seb to no end and cranking up the ac so high that it makes a whirring sound. let me guess – you’re going to read at least ten books and work on your tan?” 

“actually, only five books. i’m not that much of a nerd. i’’ve got to save some time for my girl, as well.” she flashed the raven haired girl a smile, taking her hand within her own. “i’d really love it if we could go see a concert one time too. since you just love music so much.” she chuckled, eyes flickering to the ground and back up to her friend. “although i’ll probably end up passing out from the walking alone. you might have to carry me, romeo.” she joked, taking a jab at the girl’s dislike for the play. serena could keep olivia on her toes, and vice versa. that’s why they made a good pair.

Glancing down for a moment at the plate pushed before her, brown orbs returned to Serena. “If you’re sure..” Desirae began, before picking up a fry and nibbling on it. “But the invitation’s always open if you ever decide you wanna, cause it certainly won’t be the last vacation I ever go on.” 

Serena’s ears perked up with interest. “I mean, right now I can’t. That’s for sure, a hard no. But if you ever wanted to do it say in like; the next s i x months I’d say yes.” A nervous, bubbly laugh left her lips before she picked up the tab for the check, glancing at her iPhone to see what time it was. “Oh, would you look at that? It’s almost time for happy hour. Unfortunately, I’ve got to skip to get going soon.”

        having been a freshman just three years ago, rylan knows that the only difference serena is making in most of those kids’ lives is an increasing amount of stress and displeasure. with only a small percentage of teens actually holding an interest in english … well, he wouldn’t be surprised to find out that more students hated her than what was let on. but who was he to tell her that when she was so clearly happy with her job ?? just because he’s halfway miserable doesn’t mean he has to always take it out on everyone else. ❝ that’d be neat – writing books. see, i just work as a cashier over at the king street grocery, right next the cupcake shop. so nothing fancy, y’know ? ❞

serena was more than happy to be graced in her untouched bubble, far away from the minds of adolescents that couldn’t care less about william shakespeare or poetry. she believed in her students for the better, which was seemingly uncharacteristic of her own teachers growing up. she had the experience with one teacher, that changed her perspective on education forever. that’s the type of teacher she wanted to be. but being a teacher also came with restrictions and writing, gave her the freedom to speak her mind whenever she wanted. lost in thought for a moment, she took a second to recollect herself and listen to what the boy was saying. listening to him degrade himself though was something she couldn’t stand for. “oh, i’m sure that’s not true rylan. i would be lucky to have my groceries bagged by you.”

Harper’s eyes shot up to meet her coffee-spill victim, for a moment seeing the anger in the businessman’s eyes. She blonde leaned towards him with a napkin to help, but was promptly swatted away by the annoyed man. Watching him scurry out the door, she sighed and shook her head at Sawyer. “Welp, that’s two days I’ve ruined now. One by forgetting a lollipop and other by ruining a suit.” Her solemn expression faded as a small smile reappeared. “You better watch out, you might be my next unlucky victim.”

Serena let out a giggle, watching the man leave. “I think that was my fault.” She piped up, moving her hands up in surrender. “I’d prefer not to get coffee spilled on my new white shirt though, Harp.”

her laugh sent a confusing chill down benji’s spine —— what was it with him ? serena was everything benji didn’t need. in fact, she was everything he didn’t want. what they had before—sex, it couldn’t have been anything more than just sex—happened almost as quickly as it ended. but even benji couldn’t deny that it was nearly something, especially at the sound of her missing him ( no one ever fucking missed benjamin andrews ). benji shook his head; he couldn’t let his brain wander any further down memory lane. “ look, ” he said shortly, his head back in his hands, “ i don’t know what you want from me, but i also don’t think you know what you want. you might think you know, but what you want—what you want i can never give you. so just— ” he stopped, lifting his head back up to meet his tired eyes with hers. “ just help me out, and don’t. just don’t. —okay ? ” benji could taste how harsh his words were, a bitter, familiar taste. but what else was he supposed to do ? set himself up for the inevitable ? set serena up for even worse ? fuck no.  

"don’t what?” serena asked, feeling herself become suddenly heated as she stood up. “don’t admit that i miss your cynical jokes and your curly locks of hair that would always find their way in front of your damn eyes?” she shook her head, with a frown forming on her face. “i can’t do that, benji.” she whispered his name, vocal chords tightening. they couldn’t be trusted at this time. all she could feel was the blood raging up to her veins and a cold shoulder to the boy. she took a deep breath, hoping to calm herself from the high she was reeling. “you say you can’t give me what i want, but i think we both know you’re too scared. and maybe, i was at one point - “ she slung her bag over her shoulder, looking down at him. “but i’m not anymore.” she let a sigh fall out of her mouth “but if what we had was really just SEX. i’ll see the door and won’t bother you again.” she reached down in her bag, looking for something. it was revealed to be a keychain. one he had given her, because he said he didn’t want it anymore. “i think this belongs to you though. i, on the other hand - no longer do.” she spoke quietly, feeling quite fragile at the moment. she threw the keychain in his general direction, and afterwards clenched her fists together. hating the feeling of weakness.

        ❝ says you, ❞ rylan states with a roll of his eyes. he rests his elbow on the table before reaching for his shake, sliding the glass closer and then lifting it to bring the straw to his mouth. he takes a lazy sip and lets the chocolate beverage sit on his tongue for just a moment, waiting for it to melt slightly more than it already is (( because of the stirring )) before swallowing it. he always drinks his milkshakes like this – it’s a quirk of his, one could suppose. as he places the glass back on the smooth surface between them, rylan gives the blonde a curious look. ❝ d’you think you’ll ever get tired of it ?? of teaching, i mean, ❞ he questions, trying to avoid a debate over the value of romeo and juliet in schools, which he’s currently not in the mood for having.

“I mean, I suppose some day I will. But right now, it’s good. I feel like I’m making a difference in these kids lives. It’s the little moments for me, when someone asks for my commentary on their work or wants me to encourage them to do well on an assignment.” She takes a breath in between rants, this was something she had thought of many times going into college with this field in mind “but I will eventually get tired of it. I think by that time though, I’ll take up writing on my own. Professionally. To get published, I guess. Mostly I write for myself though. What do you do again, Rylan?”

the clock was just about to hit midnight, the neon signs of many downtown charleston establishments buzzing with fluorescent light down at an empty street. having just finished his shift, benji was leaning against the outside brick of the movie theater—waiting for nothing, but always potentially for something. an unlit cigarette dangled between his lips awaiting a flick of a flame from his lighter; benji was too distracted by his own, dark thoughts to bother to ignite the thing ( could he be anymore of a john bender wannabe ? ). instead, he had one leg up against the wall, his hand anxiously tapping against it, and the other running through the front of his messy, dark hair. at the sound of approaching footsteps, benji’s head shot up. “ you ? ” he scoffed upon realizing who it was, “ can’t you see i’m trying to be brooding ? ” finally, he reached up to light the cigarette, smoke slowly pouring from his nostrils as the numbing, airy buzz began soothing his head. 

“can’t you see i’m trying to take a goddamn walk off a SHORT pier?” serena countered back, stopping in her tracks - unable to resist being so abrasive with him. she just had her heart basically ripped out by the boy, and had to put it back together herself. she just needed a walk to clear her head, filled with distracting thoughts of him only. “that’s what you should be doing though.” she mumbled, stuffing her hands in her pockets of the only leather jacket she owned. she began walking again, only to stop in her tracks with a sigh. “nice to know some things don’t change.” she gestured to him, then the movie theater behind him. taking out a cigarette of her own, she lit it up only to cough a fit when she pressed it against her lips to fill the void his once did. “fuck,” she cursed, inhaling the cold harsh air.

“…and then he just ran out of the hospital, gown and all.” Harper sighed, rubbing her forehead with the tips of her fingers momentarily. “I just don’t understand people some around here. I mean, all I was gonna give him was a shot and it would have made his life a whole lot better.” Shaking her head, she put her coffee to her lips. “Sorry, I’m babbling. I guess I’m just glad to not be working anymore.” she nervously smiled to the other as she turned a little too rapidly, spilling her coffee all over the nearest person. “Oh my goodness! I’m sorry! I didn’t burn you right?! I am a nurse after all, I can help with that.”

“well, yeah but harper when you’re coming at someone with a large scary needle; i think their behavior should be excused.” serena pointed out, “besides, this was a little kid coming into the doctor’s for the first time. they just needed a lollipop probably.” she started to drift her eyes over to the coffee creamer, reaching for it to put in her mocha latte. she wasn’t too big n the actual taste of coffee, more for the milk like substances added into it. watching her friend spill coffee all over another person, she couldn’t help but burst into laughter. noticing a glare from the other person, she quieted down immediately. “whoops..”

“not to sound creepy – “ sure, it wasn’t the best replacement for hey, how are you? but sometimes, nico didn’t think before he spoke. “but like, could i take your picture? or like – a few pictures? possibly in different locations?” his eyes squinted as he looked at the other, fingers tapping on the camera that was secured around his neck. “this customer wants some faceless pictures for her website but i can’t find anyone that fits the look that she wants.” his explanation eased up the weird factor, but the fact that was a little high probably didn’t help. “please? it would be like, a HUGE help if you could do this for me. a huge help. physically the biggest help ever.” 

serena had been sitting down on a wooden, antic bench across from a store when nico approached her. at first, caught up in a book the girl didn’t realize he was talking to her; after all - she was no model. she abruptly lifted her head, to turn and face him after his little monologue. “well, i guess i can help you out. but what’s the website for?” if she was going to be put up on a website, she wanted to know what cause she would be ‘donating’ to.
