i s2g every time i want to revive this muse i like lose my muse a week later
Edward Zo, an Asian actor who tried to audition for the role of Light and was rejected on grounds of being Asian, made a Vlog speaking about whitewashing
Light wasn’t Asian? Japanese
Japan…is in….Asia…..
But there are already 2 Asian actors who played live action Light Yagami. The English version should have a white person. Or at least ambiguously mixed race person.
So because there was already a live action movie made with real Asians any subsequent interpretations are fair game for whitewashing?? That makes no sense. ‘The English version should have a white person?’ Does it hurt you so bad to see people that don’t ~represent your race~ in a movie about Asian people? Perhaps stick to movies about white people if you can’t bear to see people of another race cast in a movie that takes place in fucking Japan. You certainly wont have any shortage of movies to choose from since white people dominate the film industry in the U.S. Dear white people: NOT EVERYTHING IS ABOUT YOU.
It’s not a movie about Asian people. The source material is Japanese, but it’s set in a modern world. The English adaptation does not require any Asian culture for it to work. Having an Asian main character would be awkward and reduce the overall effectiveness of the story. Why even bother making an English adaptation if the cast is Asian? That would be ridiculous.
Look, I get it. Hollywood is white washed. I too, a a progressive tumblr user, ask for a more diverse representation in the media. But this is a terrible example to make an issue with.
death note is legit set in japan lmao
So Japan isn’t apart of the modern world, there are no Japanese people that can speak English, works set in and made in Japan by Japanese people aren’t somehow Japanese and movies can’t have more than 2 Asian actors because they’ve met the quota.
“I too, a progressive tumblr user”
death note is undeniably set in japan
you literally need to only watch one episode to realize this
the main character is light yagami, a japnese man
everyone involved in the kira task force is japanese except for L, Watari, and the two criminals L brought for an arc (i think). and then theres Mello and Near some FBI and CIA people but
I mean then theres some on Japanese characters but its. set in Japan. it begins in Japan and ends in Japan. the majority of the cast is Japanese. this is literally episode 1. more than ¾ of the plot and acrion is in Japan.
the lengths people will go to forgive whitewashing is incredible

Sayu’s the kind who goes through a lot of friends in life. She has a few longtime friends since she was young, like most people, but most friends she have are just people she knows for a year or two before drifting apart from beyond awkwardly saying Happy Birthday once a year on Facebook. She has like one or two (maybe three) close friends, and everyone else is sort of in the now. That being said, she’s more than fine with that.
