April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
I challenge you to share a photo of yourself with why you believe when a survivor of SA of shares his or her story with #ywbelieve, so we can create a supportive & nonjudgmental community online. For starters, I challenge (four friends) to join in.
The campaign is “Surviving in Numbers” http://www.survivinginnumbers.org
These are horrific numbers that we don’t always hear about.
That’s why it is important that we #startbybelieving…your response matters

FYI - at least 8 trans women and gender non-conforming individuals have been killed in the U.S. in 2015, averaging about 1 per week thus far this year...
All but one of these individuals are people of color. These lives were cut short by intimate partners (at least 2), family members (1), police (1), and in general, hate.
The first TWOC (trans woman of color) that was murdered this year in the US (that I am aware of) was Lamia Beard. She lived in Norfolk, VA. I wanted to ensure that my colleagues doing antiviolence and other related work have these murders on their radar. Many of these deaths have not received much media coverage.
Please take some time to look through the resources that FORGE provides @ http://forge-forward.org, and subscribe to their mailing list if you have not done so already. FORGE'S archived webinars and resources have been extremely helpful in my experience. -- Kaylin Tingle (member of VCU's The Well Dream Team)

Note: The following story contains descriptions of sexual assault that some readers might find upsetting. It was Andrew's sixth night of freshman year at Brown University when he was assaulted by a male student in his dorm bathroom. When Andre...
