what was your first job?
“I worked as a movie theater concessionist way back when I lived in Texas and it was such a small little town, and I remember seeing only the same fifty or so people every couple of weeks, whereas here I barely see the same face more than once.”

“I sleep with the little ones in my bed so it really depends on how they’re sleeping. Usually Izzy’s tucked into my armpit and Dawson’s head is where his feet should be.”

“Full of pampers and used paper towels.”

“Last time I checked plastic surgery costs thousands of dollars. And--no, I wouldn’t. I’d rather spend that money on a trip or Dawson’s and Izzy’s daycare costs.”
what is your daily make up routine?
“I don’t really wear makeup--just a little bit of mascara and chapstick.”
what piece of jewelry do you have that means the most to you?
“Dawson made me this macaroni necklace and said it was my necklace for being the best big sister ever, and I’ll wear it no matter what I’m wearing because it reminds me what I’ve been trying to work so hard for.”

“Anything by Stephen King. His books are scary.”

“I did--his name was Rompy, and I kinda don’t wanna talk about what happened to him.”
As a child, what was your dream job?
“I wanted to be whatever Bear Grylls does, or the host of Fear Factor.”

“Oh jeez, it’d be honestly be my dream to go on a date with Catalina Garcia--it’s like something someone would win out of a teen magazine or something. And Elain’s pretty cute--her accent is to die for. Plus, her lips look very... inviting. And heck, maybe even just a parent-like playdate with Morticia. We’ve been on plenty of those.”

Looking down at herself, there wasn’t too much damage. Her head didn’t hit the ground, at least not hard enough for damage. The quick assessment was that she was fine, though she’d need to make sure she wasn’t bleeding too bad before she rode off again. “I couldn’t just take your helmet.” Elain waved Sawyer off. “Why thank ya.” She smiled, tousling her braids slightly. “No ma’am, Alabama, born and raised.”
“I’m from Texas myself. It’s kind of comforting knowing there’s a country girl in these city streets. It’s weird how we’ve never run into each other before. I’m just--on my way to Treatz. Do you wanna... join me maybe?”

Elain lay on the ground for a moment laughing. It hurt, it definitely hurt, but something about falling always made her laugh. She always wondered if it was some sort of defense mechanism her brain had built in. She lifted her head to see the pretty blonde above her, taking her hand to lift herself up. “I should probably invest in a helmet, huh?” She looked down to see her jeans had ripped in the fall. It was nothing new, but a little annoying. Those were her nice jeans. “Elain.”
Right off the bat Sawyer couldn’t get enough of her laugh--it was so cute that she laughed after falling off her bike. She could tell she didn’t take herself too seriously, and she loved that. In her head, she could imagine running through a field of flowers with her and randomly adopting a puppy and going to arcades with her siblings with her and oh goodness--was that a southern accent she heard? “You could borrow mine. You don’t know how many times I’ve hit my noggin on the ground, and I’ll never learn my lesson. I, uh, I like your hair... You’re not originally from San Francisco aren’t you?”

“Well, the effervescent Catalina Garcia is my celebrity crush and she could block me on Instagram and I’d be okay with it. And there’s this super cute girl who fell off her bike the other day. I want her to ride on my handlebars.”
“… You have got to be kidding me.” Percy doesn’t know just how long she’s been staring at her freshly egged car. Yolk is dripping down the windshield and eggs are hanging off the side mirrors, and in the san francisco wind the whole mess is drying into something disgustingly crusty. If Percy was a lesser woman she might want to cry. After all, this car was a rental. As it is, she’s just pissed. “What the fuck…” Percy turns left and right to try and find the culprit, pointing to her car as she snappishly directs her question to anyone on the street, “Did you see who the fuck did this?”
Sawyer, in fact, did see who egged the woman’s car and what was she going to do about it. Standing at 5′2″, there was no way she’d be able to stop the vandals on her own. She sheepishly shrugged, licking her lips. “Yeah... it was...” then aimlessly pointed the opposite direction from where the woman was coming from. “He had an SF Giants baseball cap ‘n was wearing cargo shorts. Then some girl with, like, a boho skirt and strappy sandals came up and asked to join in. It all happened so fast.”

Elain loved riding her bike through the city. The hills made it difficult, but that only made it more fun to her. Sure, she liked to be poised, but she would always much rather be rough and dirty. The amount of times she had fallen off of her bike was too many for her to count. She sped down a hill, much too fast for a bike without good brakes. She lost control, skidding to a stop and falling at the feet of a random stranger. “I’m fine.”
One thing Sawyer refused to give up as she made the sacrifice to move away from Texas was her skateboard. Also, her siblings--but her skateboard was her one possession that she kept to remain some sort of identity. Too much changed all at once and if could have something familiar then that would mean all the world. She liked to skate from job to job throughout the city because she hated staying underground in a stuffy train.
She stopped at the edge of the curb to wait for the crosswalk light to turn green when she heard a sound all too familiar. She turned to see a runaway bike with another petite blonde attached to it. If she had super strength, she’d stop it but she blinked and they landed at her feet. A giggle bubbled at her lips. “Careful Lightnin’ McQueen, there race hasn’t started yet. She lifted her elbow to show a gnarly scrape. “This happened last night on Potrero Hill on my way home from my shift at the cafe.” Then she opened the hole in her jeans by her knee where a bruise lay. “I ran into a light pole this mornin’ and I already have a bruise.”
Sawyer reached out to help the person up. “Sawyer.”

Normally Gideon would be irritated by a stranger asking such an intrusive - personal - question, and touching him no less, but there’s something nearly completely disarming about this person. He looks her over rather blatantly, albeit blankly, before really focusing on what she has to say; she seems almost to be out of place, as if from another time. “I don’t know that it was just one moment.” A procession of moments, events that robbed the warmth from his heart bit by bit until he couldn’t feel where it was in his chest anymore.
“Not for me, at least. Really, I have a harder time remembering a time when I felt like anything but an adult - even when I was very small.” He pauses, frowning just a little. “Has someone said or done something unkind to you?”
sawyer studied the person’s face--where did she know them from? “more like life was unkind to me,” she mused, plopping down beside him. her mom was lovely; she loved her children as much as she could but that love couldn’t be compared to the love she had for booze and crank. “if i had dime for every time i asked god why he was testing me like this i’d be rich enough to stop calling for him. i’m sorry--do i know you from somewhere?”
