Trust in human nature. Expect those around you to lie, sue, cheat, deceive, ridicule, criticize, double-deal, blackmail, equivocate, and obfuscate. Expect those around you to be lazy, late, immature, self-centered, slow to pay, short-sighted, and vain. Your opponents will not play fairly and, probably, neither will you. That is because neither you nor your opponents are āplayingā and there are no mutually agreed upon rules of conduct in this life. While you can expect shocking and outrageous behavior from your enemies, there is no reason for you to feel either shock or outrage. The villainous behavior of humans is as predictable as the venomous behavior of rattlesnakes.
I once encountered a rattlesnake in my garage. After an hourās spirited chaseāin which it hid behind and under my mower, paint cans, work benches, tool boxes, shelving units, and lumberāI captured the terrified creature, carried it out into the desert, and released it. While I was stalking it, I fully expected the snake to strike me if it could. I was therefore careful not to put myself in a position where it could get its fangs into me. When you are dealing with a rattlesnake, it would be idiotic not to expect it to strike at you. It is in the nature of the rattlesnake to strike at animals who threaten them. The human ape is likewise true to its own duplicitous nature. It would be a very bizarre reaction for you to become outraged, shocked, or offended when a snake behaves like a snakeāor when a human acts like a human.
Feeling the emotions of shock and outrage when humans behave like humans is a dysfunctional reaction on your part. Those emotions only make you feel churned up inside. Feeling shock and outrage at some piece of human behavior does not help you respond effectively or efficiently to the people exhibiting the behavior. Instead, feeling those emotions may prompt you to do something stupidāmeaning something self-defeating. And, your exclamations of shock and outrage will not make your enemies lose a momentās sleep. They will rationalize and justify their behavior, finding support for their actions from others of your enemies. They will feel smug and self-righteous that they have caused you to suffer or be frustrated.
So, do not become outraged by the treacherous or evil means used to oppose you, though you may pretend to be outraged, shocked, or offended at any time that it seems useful to do so. Do not engage in a personal feud with someone who has betrayed you. Do not allow revenge to become one of your goals. Your life must not be defined by the actions of others. Respond to their behavior with a counter-move that brings you closer to your own goals.
