So this blog was created because I thought scale house was going to be fun this year. The tips on surviving are exactly that. How I'm surviving. What I've learned.
Also some dogging on creepers.
If any Tumblr/farm girl ever finds this blog and is like 'huh, cool,' I hope you stay safe and I hope something out of here helps.
Its not a super common job and it usually only lasts for like a week but it's changed my life already.
The Last Seven Days in the Scale House:
I have dealt with burning semis
Called 911 for the first time (for said semi)
Had to deal with a pedophile truck driver hitting on me and telling me to run naked
Dreading going to work because I knew I would have to interact with said pedo.
Been yelled at
Helped batten down the hatches for a huge tornado that came by
Get snapped at by my favorite cousin because I thought it was a little bit cool
Seen the worst hail and lightning storms in my life
My favorite dog got hit by some asshole driving too fast on the dirt road and died last night
Spent hours doing pointless jobs at the scale because the wheat has been too wet to harvest or the columbines are stuck in the mud or the grain carts are broken or the same guy driving the burning semis had another truck break down
The custom cutters kept switching trailers and not telling me so their truck weights keep changing and it's *my fault we didn't get the weights right*
My parents got to go to Nashville and I was invited by the singer too and didn't get to go even though we've been doing absolutely nothing
There's been the spirits of the recently deceased old owners of the farm hanging around freaking me and my aunt and our recently deceased pup Eli out

This has been the worst week I've ever had in my life and I'm crying rn

Dangerous situations are scary. Panicking is even scarier. Don't panic is the single most important thing to remember. Best thing: make sure your boss knows what's going on. Have a fire extinguisher nearby. Hold on tight to the metal beam keeping you on top of the elevator. Most importantly pray to whatever or whoever you believe in earnestly and with abandon.
Drink lots of water afterwards. Hydrating after an adrenaline rush is extremely important. Eat something too, and then get back to work with new knowledge of safety and protocol.
Stay safe guys. And when you can't, stay smart.

DO NOT. UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. PANIC.
It's not helpful and will scare other people too. For dangerous situations, see Tip #7.
Less dangerous situations won't need panic. Simply hustle and be willing to learn. It's nothing personal. There are people around to help you.

AUTHORITY IS SCARY. Acting extra cheerful but very quietly will help. When in doubt, say less and with a big smile.
When not in doubt, be yourself. Most people on the road and doing boring jobs will be happy to see a normal face.

To the people who see this, I’m in the FFA. And I recently gotten first place in a LDE, so feeling pumped up, I go into the search and I type ffa. Damn I regret it. Instead of the future farmers of America, I see fat fetishes. Idc what y’all are into there’s no shame in it. But it was just shocking lol.

I'm here because I want to educate people about one of the lesser known tasks of a farmer- processing and logging crops on a large scale.
Also I'm exhausted and waiting for trucks of wheat can be boring/ I have office tasks that can be pretty tedious although important.
I'm in FFA, and do a lot of work with my local chapter and my extended family that runs the farm. But I like memes too much not to make my job one.
Me, in near tears as the protein tester from 1982 malfunctions and stops scanning samples: Please. Please just work. Please. I sold part of my soul to the old gods just to get you to turn on. I'll sell the rest if you just let me finish this one sample I've got so many trucks to do-

If you are detained momentarily and have to leave your post, leave a note telling drivers their bin number. They should be able to scale their own load.
Also, be in constant contact with your pit managers.
