// Oh yeah. I'm still alive. I just had a real bad flare up with my ear infection recently and am in the process of getting that treated. If updates are coming, they're unfortunately going to be even slower. Sorry fellas. Thank you again for your patience. I hope you all are well and healthy <:)
The floating book in front of the meditating amphibian closed shut in what seemed like an firm slam.
"S'matter, Brome? Ya been finicky all day. More than usual." The blue bearded dwarf took the smoking pipe out of his mouth to remark to his Mowlai friend across the fireplace.
"The stars....They've been gazing down with a stare, piercing like daggers...And they breathe with frigid gusts of wind.
Something is amiss. Something big. And it's starving."
ISO peddled their metal feet on the floor in a repetitive pacing. All while shuffling through paper upon paper, with more than half of them scattered on the floor.
"You act as if you should have known this was going to happen.
You hardly know this client."
All the tree could do was watch as their anxious, canine roommate circled. They really couldn't have know, yet they feel like they should have.
"I knew something was up. I SAW that look! I KNOW that look!
Why didn't you tell me you saw those messages in the chat? I-I could have said something! I-...."
"You know I only lurk around the chat to tell you what you missed. And you seemed awful busy with your job, Dagwood. Besides. It looks to me you didn't need an entire server in a scramble to figure something was amiss."
Insensitive as it sounds, Sycamore was right. The papers say it all.
They're all desperately written letters, addressed to the same individual.
Chimizo.
All received as if it was at once. If not messages to Chimizo, many more addressed to a family by the name of Minett.
It was serious. And if the sudden influx of messages wasn't telling of that, the sporadic and numerous portals that brought ISO's job to a halt was...If not serious, very unnatural.
ISO's gaze was captivated by the portal.
"I don't need to ask to know what that look means." Sycamore stood up and began walking away. "It's just like you to get attached to people you hardly know."
"You're not coming?" They shouldn't so surprised, but ISO always was when Sycamore was this dismissive. So much to the point of them not even gracing the canine with a reply aside from the rustle of their leaves from turning their gaze. ISO looked the letters in their hand, holding themselves back from crumpling them in their hands out of stress.
"I know. I got a job to do. And I intend to do it." ISO began to circle one of their fingers on the screw in their cheek, fidgeting nervously. "But all these letters for Chimizo. I can tell he's very loved. I can't sit around and wait and see when something could happen to him.
I know a good person when I see one."
Suddenly, their nervous expression changed to the usual, smiley one they plaster on their face while on their job.
"Besides! Can't give Chimizo his package if he isn't okay, right? It's the very least I can do for him!
If you're gonna stay here, keep it safe until Chimizo arrives to get it. Okay?"
More silence was ISO's answer. They can only assume Sycamore heard, the way their head slightly turned at that request.
With a bag on their back, the hand on their wrist rotating and their hat straightened....

Little irl updates under the read more.
Nothing all too big right now (hopefully. And hopefully it stays that way :') ), but July activity is gonna be weird for me and probably super unpredictable!
Borthday coming up in a little over a week....
I'm teetering on the fence if I'm gonna be participating in Artfight or not this year. My artist side is telling me "DO IT!! Fight your friends with their silly OC's!" but my drive to make art has been super finicky since this is my first year being moved out and a huge change in my schedule and energy.
Praying on my hands and knees my computer battery holds on!! It's been frequently having problems of not wanting to charge despite being plugged in and unfortunately, I am using a mac (derogatory) and I can't stand how expensive it is to get those batteries replaced. It's started acting weird with me recently again, so I'll have to se if my battery remains working or it's gonna give up the ghost. And if it does? That will DEFINITELY hinder my schedule.
It's still super hot over here and it's only supposed to get warmer and that's definitely been a big factor of my activity overall :')
As far as my last doctor visit, still having that monitored, but I went to the doctors yesterday and no news on that, which is actually good news!
That's....about the summary of it? Really, it's just me being unsure how this month is gonna go, but I guess it will be a matter of time to see what happens! Either way, thank you all for your patience! I hope yall are well!
OH! And to my artist friends that ARE participating in ArtFight, have fun!! I'm rooting you on whether I end up joining later or not!
Ohhh, it always paid off. Dutiful surveillance of certain plumbers meant not only new scores, but new targets. The various kingdoms throughout the world, now all with decent transportation options thanks to Mario? Ohhh, the rabbit could cry, it's such pure perfection.
The Kingdom of Bonneton in particular... ahh, it was a bit barren, honestly. A monochrome paradise full of cute little spirits in shapes of various headwear. They all seemed friendly enough, sheesh--maybe a bit too friendly to someone they'd just met! Nevertheless... upon scouting of the area, aside from the occasional coin laying about and admittedly breathtaking sights, there wasn't much to speak of in terms of potential heisting.
Nabbit had been casually peering into these little... hat houses... through their windows as she wandered about all casual-like. Nothing but sightseeing here! Definitely aided that quite a few tourists were here to do the same thing. Err--sightseeing, not sizing the kingdom up. She had PLENTY of other kingdoms to do the same for, and, as she finished peering through another set of windows, she'd begin to turn, and...
"DWAEEYAAAAHHHH!!!"
...Immediately get spooked by one of the hat ghosts being right beside her. No need for coherent thought; she had instinctively hightailed it to at LEAST the other side of that house!
It was quiet in the Cap Kingdom of Bonneton....Too soon to say too quiet! Not that Cappy missed some older days where the air was filled with smoke from the destruction of the kingdom instead of the usual, monochromatic fog! Heavens above the Cloud Kingdom, no. That unexpected visit from the koopa king wasn't missed at all. But the tour around the world and the sights from it? Oh, most certainly. So much variety. So many people! Outside of the occassional visits from the Mushroom Kingdom and further out, things were back to a routine of the mundane. Cappy's home of tradition felt all too traditional. Even for him!
It was all black and white....And... ever so slightly? Purple?
"Hoh?"
The difference was juuuust enough to make the spectral hat fellow turn their gaze in an instance to see a figure dawning purple, sticking out like a sore, nonexistent thumb on Cappy's nubs! Not to mention...Those bunny-like ears that poked out from up top! Could it....No it can't...The Broodals been gone for a good long while now! Why would they suddenly show their bushy, cotton tails?
Well, no taking any chances right? It was far too uncanny of a similarity! Tilting their hat face in front, they floated to the violet, colored visitor...slowly now....While her head was-....
"HOWAHHHHHHH!"
She turned! With his rim in a fringe and nubs in a flail, Cappy shot like a ghostly dart to the opposite side of Nabbit. Even after all this time, they're still easily startled!
Or at least needed a second to regain their focus. Remaining at a safe distance (and out of sight)...
"Are...are you with that Bowser? Or those Broodals? C-cause if you are, you're STILL not welcome here!"

Croaks, coos and frogsongs filled the atmosphere of the Uchawi's Hearth, what felt like the only sanctuary for the Root Sisters and many others gifted with magic and mana flowing in their blood.
Gifted? Cursed? It was debatable with the current state of Talamh. Something much more worrying for Brome and what was left of his people. His family.
To the crimson Mowlai, this was his home. Home to him and what he could find of his children. Two with him at the water covered ruins. There were still some missing out there in the wide, dangerous world.
And many others..already...
"Aye."
Brome's slit gaze rose from his sleeping child he was holding and to his blue-bearded friend, scratching the back of his head sheepishly. The water bubbles Brome's arcana was conjuring and hovering around him and his child to catch their attention popped and dropped into the puddle below them.
"I'm, ehhhhhh. Not interruptin' anythin', I hope. I can come back later."
"No. Not at all, my friend. Your warm company is always welcome and trusted here. And certainly with my family.
But...I request...around my hatchlings, not..."
"Heh. T'smoke? Nah nahhhh. The pipes reserved fer the bonfires and heartheoots when Galandra 'n the scarecrow get back with dinner...Shouldn't be long from now unless they got themselves into some trouble. Wouldn't be surprised if those two did."
A smile widened on Brome'a face. A sight that seemed much more rare in these trying times. But a very familiar one to Karl. He always was the kind of person to think more about those around him. Something so admirable to the Mowlai.
Stretching his arms out, Karl sat himself on a rock near the waters with Brome and his children. A good two of them. One sleeping in Brome's arms and the other wading in the water, staring at Karl and reaching out to him with little, grabby hands.
"Looks like he remembers you. Uncle Karl." So he remembered that little thing he called himself when he saved his child.
"And I remember YOU! You were real brave in those caves in Grandery! Can't say I'm surprised knowin' yer papa. Gahaha!"
Karl gave a smirk at Brome and back at his child, giggling.
"You know you can hold him. I trust you with my kin."
"Nahhhh I...I ain't used to the lil croakers like his father is." Karl did, however proceed to jump into the water and lean on his knees to bring himself closer to the child's height.
"...S'ppose I'm gonna have t' change that in a few years with rocklings of my own, huh?"
"...Are you nervous?
About being a father, I mean. I know how fearless the great and mighty Karl is, but your expression right now is one I'm unfamiliar with."
Brome's remark wasn't even met with a stare from Karl. He was leaning his head down, as if he was aware of his poor poker face.
"Am I that obvious? Thought I was better at that."
"You? Subtle?" Brome tilted his head into the collar of his cloak. "I'd be deeply unsettled if you were."
Now that was enough to get a look out of Karl. A very unimpressed one before he tilted his head and looked to the side.
"Ahhhhhh...New territory fer me is all... Don't...Don't s'ppose ya got any advice on bein' a father...when that does happen...do ya?"
"So that's why you wanted to come and speak to me?"
Brome's answer was immediately followed up by a laugh from him, just quiet enough to only get a small movement from the child he was holding. A very unexpected response to the dwarf, considering the Mowlai's reserved nature.
"What? I'm serious!"
"I know. I know, just...You'll have to forgive me, Karl. I just find it rather humorous that you're the one coming to me for advice. When I've always sought you for wisdom and answers."
"Mmmmm I guess...Just don't got the answers for this kind of thing. 'n you and I both know Galandra and Cider don't exactly have that experience under their belts and cloaks."
"That is true. And I suppose if you did have the answers you are looking for, you wouldn't be asking me about them."
Karl pointed his finger at Brome as if it was a way to signal a nonverbal "bingo" in response.
Brome descended closer to the water below him while he was floating, as if he was trying to ever so slightly ground himself to speak to his unnaturally anxious friend.
"Well. When I had my eggs, I had to come to the conclusion that this isn't just responsibility.
My family is my responsibility, yes. But they're so much more than that as well. When I first had my eggs, I saw them as a necessity to keep my people alive. And keep me together.
A feeling you're probably deeply familiar with."
A sigh exhaled from underneath the dwarf's mustache in response. His expression, cold and hard as a rock, like the one he was born from, was all Brome needed for an answer. As he did, it was as if the child in Brome's arms was following in reply, yawning with their eyes shut tight and little arms reached out. Brome set his finger out for the child to grab onto as they fell back into a slumber.
"My children are important. To both me and my people.
But I can't be the one to lie on their shoulders for them to bring me hope.
I need to be the shoulder they lie on when they need hope."
"Mmm. We have to be mighty mountains, even to the smallest of pebbles that rest on us...We're their mighty fortitude."
Ahhhh yes. The dwarf's poetry, as beautiful as ever. It was met with a smile and glance from the Mowlai.
And how did he fail to notice for this long that his friend was holding his other child just now?
"And here you are, asking me for advice when you put it much more eloquently than I ever could."
"Just a little poetry! Y'know me, Brome..."
"Indeed I do. And I know you well enough that you're going to be an excellent father when that inevitable day comes when you return to the furnace and greet your young ones."
"Don't butter me up, kid."
"I mean it! For one, you've got to be the most level-headed of us all. Especially me and my...
Raging storm of emotions."
That last, quiet remark was covered by Brome turning his head in shame. His lack of control in his emotions is nothing he's proud of.
"GACK!" Brome's guilt, along with Karl's response was interrupted by the Mowlai in the Dwarf's arms, playfully tugging at his blue beard and laughing. "Eaaaaaaasy there. Well. Somebody's gotta make sure ya youngsters don't go running off and gettin' tangled with goblins or eaten by a mushtroll."
"...Spoken like a true parent." He really does sound like a parent to those three sometimes, doesn't he? His fellow rebels in arm and Root Sisters.
Having strayed from the rest of the dwarves from their eternal servitude in the mines to the Underking, the Root Sisters were all the family he had now.
"Well, ah...I ain't one yet. I'm new t'this...Sometimes I forget that yer new to this being a father thing too. Seems more natural for ya."
Brome slit pupils couldn't help, but drift into his reflection in the waters below him. Seeing his peering eyes and the child of his very own blood and arcana in his arms...
"...In these bleek days, I would never consider this blessing natural. To those of us that bear magic, no less. You, me...Mother Uchawi...Uchawi would know more than the rest of us...I'd more consider this a miracle to all of us, knowing we have that sliver of a chance to have blood of our own just caught between our fingers."
"Mmmm. Guess I should have gone to Mother to ask these questions too."
Karl leaned back down to put the child back in the water. Before they were going to rip off anymore of his beard.
"Welllll, I'll get outta yer uh...Well. Ya don't got hair.
I'll leave you and yer youngin's be. 'least until I got the catch Galandra and Cider bring back all cooked up."
The dwarf stood back up to take his leave to bonfire above, ready to greet the other two in their eventual return to the sanctuary. He could only get a good five or so steps away before Brome halted him with a quick...
"Wait."
"Hm?"
"Apologies. My friend. Can I ask you a question?" It'll be brief."
With a scratch under his hat and on the back of his neck, Karl kicked to turn himself around and stress out a looooooong "Aaaaaalright. 'm all ears."
"I wanted to ask for your input. On a name for one of my children...How does...Karl Hijada sound?"
The question was met with Karl. The dwarf. Not the Mowlai. Nearly choking on his own breath.
"Ya serious?!"
"Absolutely.
No better name for one of my kin than someone that is near and dear to me, especially in these times me and my family can rely on you most...If that's alright. I hope you're not upset."
"Upset? I'd pick the word honored! And uh...surprised...I really mean that much t'ya?"
"No. You mean so much more than that, my friend. For even being one of the last friendly faces I've seen in this world." Brome's remark was such a bittersweet truth. It's dispiriting to know how little people that possess magic can rely on, but it truly did make their companionship all the more meaningful.
It was rather instantaneous, how there was nobody in front of the desk one moment and somebody there the next. This in itself could be explained away by how this particular bloke appeared: pale white and translucent. A phantom, and quite the lofty one at that.
“This is FETCH Enterprises, correct?” Chimizo leaned forwards, unintentionally looming over the robotic canine. “While I don’t need anything delivered at the moment, I was wondering if you provided a service like most post offices – a P.O. Box, to receive letters here rather than elsewhere.” A brow raised as he scanned the room. “This is mainly because I don’t have an address.” He coughed. Not one he was willing to divulge to just anybody, anyways.
Shaking his head, he went on, “If you do, my name is Chimizo. C-H-I-M-I-Z-O. And as for any fees, I’ll gladly pay them up front. All I ask for is a schedule to follow, so I know when to drop them off.”
"HUOH?"
ISO felt as if their eyes short-circuited one second and then the very next moment they reactivated, the pale figure was there the next moment. As if it was a mechanical blink and you’ll miss it.
Their lightbulb nose let out a single beep at they made a tiny hop from being surprised and just about scattered a pile of letters from miscellaneous clients. A reaction lured out less by the client’s spectral appearance and more of just…how did he get there so quickly? And how did ISO miss him?
“AH! S-sorry! About that. I…I didn’t see you come in! Or uh…hear you.”
That last part being the most head-scratching and cog-turning thing, considering their keen hearing...Maybe it wasn't working as well today...
ISO frantically got to their scattered papers with one hand and tilted their scrambled hat from covering their face to properly reply to Chimizo.
“But, ahhhh. You came to the right place, sir! That’s us! FETCH! Or uh…it’s lil delivery scout. Hahaaaa…”
Their nervous chuckle was followed by ISO holding their floppy ears, tugging and petting them in a nervous fashion.
“Mmmm. P.O. box huh? I gotcha. I gotchaaaa.
I got just the address. Hereeeeeee ya go!”
Digging from under their hat was a card with an address.
“ Trust me. It might look like a lil, middle of nowhere place, but it’s just the place to find me. But uhhhh. I’m flexible to work anywhere, really. Got my number, just tell me to meet ya wherever your heart’s content.
Now that name. Let meeeee. Just....
C….H….I….M…..”
The rest of them spelling out their client’s name was silent as ISO glanced up at him.
Something seemed…Off. About their client.
“Hey uh….
I don’t mean to pry, uh…Chimizo, right? And I’m not sure if you got any preferences, but I can get you something? Before you go I mean. Something to drink? Something to eat?
I don’t wanna assume anything, but uh…I don’t want to leave a client unwell or tired.”
Call it intuition. A dog thing. A worry. Or simply the way ISO was looking at Chimizo and his appearance. Something in their cold, metal chest told them to look at their client the way they did now.
