Nothing.
Its empty. Devoid of anything.
But a cat. Frozen in time. Staring at the door and waiting.
[Scarecrow quickly lept out a window, landing on his feet and pacing to the side, out of view of the window. The gasser finally ran out of gas, powering down and going out. He grit his teeth, grabbing something from his pocket.]
[Matches.]
[ Scarecrow ripped the package open, pulling one of the matches out. . . . His mind crashed down on him. Sitting there and staring at the match in his hands. He could kill them right there. And possibly even take out respawn for good. But.. something in him hesitated. Maybe it was the offer that the sniper made him? His current employers would probably find a way to fuck him over after this.. But considering what he did.. He looked away, crushing the match in his hand and dropping it. He pulled his mask down and inhaled shakily, wiping his grimey sleeve across his face. So that was it. Now what.]
[It was so quiet in the desert.]
(Demo trods through the confusing halls of the RED base, making his way down towards the hallway where the hatch to the respawn system lies. He carries a flashlight, unable to see well in the dim red emergency lights. He was rather tired, now regretting coming all the way down here. The power needs to be turned back on though, and nobody else seems to have been fixing it.
As he nears the next hallway, close to his destination, he pauses. His ears pin back a bit as he sniffs the air. A familiar, unpleasant smell wafts through the air. He’s suddenly very uneasy, fear kicking up in his chest. The smell raises alarms in his head and he tenses when he hears talking around the corner. At least two people are there, reeking of explosive gas and the power had conveniently gone out a short while ago. He was unarmed, but… Wait, is that Sniper’s voice? He quickly turns the corner, shining light on the source of the voice. His heart drops to his stomach.
There they are, Sniper and Scarecrow.)
"You should head back to the van, it's probably safest for ya there, kid. If they find out that you're--"
He abruptly stops mid-sentence as soon as the light hits the two, freezing him in place. His mind begins to race. What would happen to him if he were caught near their respawn? Nothing good, he reckons.
Against his better judgement, Sniper turns on the invis-watch, and begins to flee. He swiftly changes back into the Spy disguise in hopes that it would do something, but his thoughts are moving too fast to know what.
@scarecrowsuggests
[Scarecrow was still gathering himself when the light was shone on them and sniper was g o n e. The breath gets caught in his lungs as he looks at the light, squinting. He couldnt even tell who it was.]
`` Damn you!- I'm not the one with respawn!``
[He reached for his knife, but decided it was no good and quickly thought over the layout of the base.. there were exits past the person, but he wasnt taking that chance. And he didnt know how many other ones were awake. Amazing. Scarecrow doesn't take another second to think about it, bolting past them and ducking to try and avoid any swinging attacks.]
@demomansuggests
(Demo reacts instinctively, grabbing the intruder by the collar of their shirt, pulling them back in front of him. He tosses them to the ground and goes to pin them, holding their arms behind their back.)
You’re not gettin away this time y’ bloody bastard.
(They look up to see if there’s any trace of Sniper, detecting the faint trail of dark stains rounding the corner. That trail won’t last long, he thought, how could I go after him without leaving this other guy here. He tries to work through it in his head, pausing. He keeps his grip on Scarecrow’s arms tight though.)
[ He struggled and tried to kick them in the side as he was pinned, the air getting knocked out of him and his hat being thrown across the ground.]
`` Damn you!- ``
[Scarecrow growled at them, trying to pull his arms out. The gasser on his back was still running, giving scarecrow an idea. He ripped one of his arms out of their grip, hurting his wrist in the process but itd be worth it. He grabbed one of the tubes on the gasser, ripping it off. The gas shot in demos face, the containers they were in quickly going ice cold as it was released. ]
(Demo reels back at the blast, his eye tearing up at the burning sensation and skin now feeling like it’s on fire. They let out a roaring yell, surprised and now angry. They stand up, frantically trying to wave the gas away from their face. They’re a bit dazed and their vision is blurring from the tears. The taste of the gas coats their tongue, making the nauseous.)
AUGH- You motherfucker-!
[Scarecrow shot up, shaking his wrist. Boy it hurt to bend like that.. He hooked them in the jaw to at least try and get them more dazed and easy to get away from. ]
`` Might not want to breath too much of that in. ``
[ He said more as a way to try and get over his frozen fear, running down the hall again, nearly running into a wall. Right.. left.. There should be a door somewhere..]

This base is impossible to navigate… But at least I have some semblance of a plan.
(Sniper is practically leaping with how far his strides are. He’s back to the light-footed spy disguise, able to match his own speed if not swifter. It’s almost nice to feel a decade or so younger than he is now.)
(If anything, it seems to instill a bit of confidence.)
Alright. Left turn here, left, right, left, right, left, left, right, right, stairwell down, sharp backwards turn, trapdoor.
(“Spy” drops down into the depths of the basement, even further than the server rooms are, let alone anything extra beneath that. Skidding down the ladder, he comes to an abrupt stop, hopping the rest of the distance to silence the echoing creak brought by the handiwork from many generations prior.)
(And with only a lighter to break through the oppressive darkness that threatens to swallow him whole, he pushes towards the very gears that ran the metaphorical—and physical—machine.)
(Coming across a doorway, he steps through, illuminating the room with a simple flick of a switch, arms crossed.)
So.
Goin’ home, are ya?
@scarecrowsuggests
The room was quietly buzzing with mechanics and servers, the only other lighting was the small blinking lights on the computers and occasional sparks from an open breaker.
That is, untill the lights flicked on. The mercenary flinches slightly, slowly standing fully before turning his head to look back at the sniper. His goggles adjusted to the light, allowing him to see again. On his back, his classic wepon, the gasser, was hissing as it released gas into the room.
`` . . . I plan on it. ``
Scarecrow lifted his boot and suddenly kicked the screwdriver caught in the breaker, the thing exploded in sparks and the lights shut down, the alarms briefly screeching before falling into complete silence and darkness.
@snipersuggestions
“Shit.”
Sniper immediately moves for Scarecrow’s last location, grabbing their shirt collar and shoving a knee into their diaphragm, then striking between their head and neck with his elbow; sending them careening towards the ground. Scarecrow’s goggles are knocked clean off by the impact, skidding across the dusty concrete floor.
The disguise hasn’t worn off yet, but it begins to waver ever so slightly around his arms thanks to the building gas in the room. It occurs to him how dangerous this situation could be, but guarding the respawn mechanism is his top priority right now. He yells over the hissing noise.
“You don’t have to do this!”
His face is barely illuminated by the dim, nearly invisible red backup lights that have kicked into gear. They’re barely highlighting the tie that’s now come undone, flapping above his dress shirt.
[Scarecrow is caught off guard by the other mercenary grabbing him and knocking his goggles off. He grunted and backed away as the gas in the room bit and burned at his eyes. ]
`` You need it more than me, shithead. ``
[Scarecrow unsheathed the knife from his belt and pushed to his feet, shooting forward and slashing their side with the heavy knife. It was enough to at least hurt, but not prevent movement. He slammed into the door behind them and kicked the 'spy' in the back of the legs to send them to the ground too. The sparks from the breaker were dangerously close to the gas, even scarecrow knew this as he tried to get the door open.]
Sniper rolls over, gasping at the sudden pain and gritting his teeth, bearing through it and propping himself up on his elbows. Turning himself over, he uses the momentum to throw his arm over and grab the bottom of Scarecrow’s leg. His disguise begins to wear off from the fighting, and he quickly grabs another cigarette, not looking to see which one it is.
It then dawns upon him that he cannot re-disguise, because of the flammable gas.
Sniper reaches for the butterfly knife instead. Flipping it outwards, he slashes across Scarecrow’s cheek and then slams his fist down over their eye as soon as he’s pulled them close enough. It’s enough to give them a black eye, if not temporarily blind them, but not enough to cause permanent damage.
And thank goodness he knows how to sew.
He fumbles in the dark and reaches into his pockets, pulling out a sewing needle and beginning to pick the lock, kneeling and focusing on it instead of continuing to fight Scarecrow, coughing at the burning sensation that’s steadily growing.
“You should be thankful, kid. If I weren’t focused on saving our asses you’d be in a lot worse shape…” He mutters.
[ He stumbled away as he hit him across the face, ugh. Always getting hit in the particularly painful part of his scar. Scarecrow grit his teeth, but regained his balance, spinning the knife in his hands.]
`` These people would sooner crack your skull in while you sleep than bother to save your base. ``
[He growled lowly, trying to hide his terror and desperation as he scanned the ground for his goggles. He needed them. The gasser was still running, as the room filled with the gas it became harder and harder to breath.. well. For sniper at least. Scarecrows mask kept him alright for the breathing part.]
Sniper breathes out lightly through his nose, trying to conserve oxygen as he focuses harder on getting the lock open. The second it clicks, he grabs Scarecrow by the back of his collar and slams the door open, gasping for air. As he quickly, roughly drags them behind him, he finally replies.
“You’re right kid, they would. But in the end, I can’t just sit back and watch you sentence them to death like this, either.”
He draws in another raspy breath, hoisting himself upwards and onto the first rung of the ladder. Then the next.
“Outside of battle, I used to think we were all enemies too. Until a certain fella opened my eyes to how closely knit these guys really are…”
“And in the end, I can’t bring myself to hurt them like this.”
[ The mercenary grunts as hes pulled out the door and dragged, only getting a few feet close to the ladder before suddenly wrapping his arm around theirs and twisting, pulling them down and throwing then down.]
`` all this and you're still sensitive to hurting them?! This is not enemy versus friend. This is life and this is a job. ``
[He kicked down on their chest, jumping up on the ladder. It didnt matter that he left his goggles now, he just had to get to the objective room. Not matter the stakes. Hed rather die than fail and still be trapped in the hell of trying to finish it like these people. His hand shook as he climbed. Even with nothing left, not even a clear light. He didnt want to die. ]
“HA!”
Sniper barks a dry laugh from the floor, shaking from the pain of being kicked.
“You’re real convinced of a…” He lets out a cough, “A job you’re not a part of, aren’t you?”
“You know nothing about how this operation works. And hell, even if I die right here, I’ll just be back to fightin’ you off anyways.”
He’s vaguely aware of how thick the air has become, and how unbearable it feels to be down here any longer, but he seems… Lost in his own thoughts, until he’s shaken out of it by a coughing fit.
“You’re remarkably stubborn… A team like ours could use someone like you, y’know.”
He heaves himself upwards onto the ladder, shaking with the effort of even moving forwards without much air to breathe. Determination drives him instead, and soon enough he’s up to Scarecrow’s level, gasping for air as it fails to reach their height for the moment.
“And… Really son, if it makes you feel any better… Nobody really cares about the objective of this job. We’re gettin’ paid a fortune to keep up the schtick, but… Nah, me and these blokes don’t really fight for the gravel.”
He shrugs, using his legs to swing over Scarecrow and up above him, then extends an arm down to help him up towards the final rung.
“So just trust me on it, kid. You’re messin’ with cogs in a much bigger machine. It ain’t worth the trouble, and we could probably pay ya double; You’d be kept out of a shallow, early grave in the desert.”
[Scarecrow grit his teeth as they passed over him, squeezing close to the bars and holding them. He had expected to get kicked in the head. He slowly looks up to see their hand, just sitting there... staring. Scarecrow looked down, inhaling through his mouth.]
`` I'd rather you had fucking kick me down and lock me in here..``
[And then a cold, rubber gloved hand took Snipers. It was shaky and covered with an odd residue, probably from the gas. There was no point now.. Except.. click.]
[Scarecrow looked at sniper as he went up the ladder. Words ringing in his mind and his grip tightened almost painfully. There wasnt any point of being there. Why would they still be battling after years? Wouldnt have one figured it out and got the intel? Surely the people who hired him would know that itd be impossible..]
[ but.. maybe they did. ]
This base is impossible to navigate… But at least I have some semblance of a plan.

@scarecrowsuggests
@snipersuggestions
Get in your car and drive off.. but only go a 4th of the way back. Wait.
(Scarecrow sat on the top of the dumpster, one of his arms down behind it on the door. Frozen. He slowly turned his head to stare at the van, spotting sniper. He was mostly hidden, well, other than his goggles reflecting a bit.)
(Damn. And here he thought he could get away without any sort of interaction.)
(Sniper huffs, then straightens his posture against the van, crossing his arms. He doesn't bother yelling, speaking at whatever volume he deems himself comfortable with.)
Starin's rude, y'know.
Out ya come, mate. Don't make me walk over there.
(Scarecrow moved his hand to his belt, removing the knife. He glanced twords the door, wondering if he could get it open and through. The raccoons were currently sitting at the base of the trashcan smugly. Ugh.
He took a moment to think before leaping off the dumpster, landing on his feet.)
" Shut the hell up. You ain't involved in my job.. you're one of the BLUs. "
(He spoke slowly, his voice rough. He held the knife to his side and mostly out of view. )
Ok.
(Sniper keeps his mouth shut, expression neutral. He doesn't even look at the guy, though he mentally acknowledges that they're armed.)
(Don't escalate the situation.)
(Scarecrow straightens a bit, turning his head twords the dumpster. He kept sniper in his peripheral while searching for another sentence that could be faster. And not guarded by raccoons. Why were they even near the red base? Didnt they hate eachother? He was told so.. wait. His head snapped to them, his eyes wide under the googles. He stepped back a bit. He had heard of the red spy and their capability of cloaking and disguises. )
(After a while of not speaking, he feels a twinge of impatience. His voice sounds slightly more gruff this time, but he doesn't raise his voice, nor does he move an inch from his original position.)
Go on, somebody's gonna get hurt if ya don't make a decision at some point, mate.
I don't have all night.
(Scarecrow gave a huff at their words and slowly approached, eyeing them. His mask and goggles were near expressionless but you could see how he felt through his movements.)
" Why are you so close to the RED base... I heard you two hated eachother.. "
(He spoke slowly, adjusting his grip on his knife. Scarecrow did have very.. well, scarecrow like qualities. His hair was stringy and curly from under his hat and his gear was puffy and thick like it was full of hay. To think this guy works with so much fire..)
(Sniper gives a disinterested look towards what he assumes is supposed to be a threatening gesture. He's been leaning against the side of the van this entire time; his posture hasn't exactly been the greatest...)
(He stands up to his full height, finally turning his head to look at Scarecrow. His arms uncross, he puts them in his pockets instead. Studying them, it's a few painfully long seconds before he speaks again.)
I could ask the same about you. Last I heard, they haven't picked up a new outsider.
Somethin' tells me you're not here for good reasons, either.
You tell me why you're lurkin' near these parts, and I'll tell ya what I'm here for, sound fair?
(Scarecrow flinched back as they stood, narrowing his eyes. He hesitated a moment before spinning the knife in his hand and sheathing it in his belt. As much as he wanted to have it out just in case, he could tell it was.. more threatening than hed like. Not wanting to provoke them.)
" . . . Trying to stop the fighting. Surprised you don't want it. From the looks of it you look more rough than me. "
(That was a lie. He didnt even have a team. At least he wasnt depending on a sort of respawn machine.. he examined them, the sniper.. The people who contracted him, well more threatened but we'll get to that later, hadnt told him much about the mercs other than their main jobs and vague abilities.. or even how they were diffrent. This one sure looked diffrent..)
( Sniper raises a brow at that, letting out a good natured chuckle. )
That bad, huh? Can't say 'm surprised.
( He shakes his head, strolling forwards to close the distance between the two. )
Look, buddy. You're not gonna get far here. I'd turn tail an' flee now before ya get yourself hurt.
Trust me.
It ain't worth the trouble.
(Scarecrow scoffed,)
`` These mercenaries rely too much on knowing their enemy and the whatever that respawn thing is, but should it get- ``
(He relized he was getting ahead of himself, going quiet. Had to remind himself who he was talking to. Scarecrow stood straight and turned, starting to walk off. He wanted it to look like he was leaving, to maybe get the sniper off their ass. Didnt feel like fighting that day... at least not with the sniper.)
You’re messin’ with something without knowin’ the consequences, kid.
( Sniper strides forwards, once again closing the gap between the two with ease. )
You ever think your employers ain’t got a clue in the world what they’re meddlin’ with? ‘Cause they don’t, I’ll tell ya that much.
Hell, I’d wager they’ve got their own sick reasons, too.
( He keeps his hands in his pockets. )
(Scarecrow stopped, turning his head slightly so he could see them without moving his body. They stood there in silence for a few heavy moments. Sniper was right. God damn his employers were idiots. But he had better chances with this. At least he assumed so.)
`` . . Do you know what yours are up to? Well, let me tell you. ``
(They turned to face Sniper, inhaling.)
`` You were hired by two petty old men who dont know how to die or settle things. To endlessly fight over land that barely even belongs to them, and hell even somehow managed to hire someone for both sides to manipulate you. To them, this is a game. And you and your beloved team are just simple pawns that they keep alive and fighting to mess with.``
(He adjusted his goggles after that, watching them. He half expected to get attacked for it..)
( Sniper comes to a halt, wearing a shocked, wide-eyed expression. You may feel a slight bit of pride at that. It seems as if you've really managed to catch him off guard! )
(That is, until he begins to laugh.)
Did they... They really- They didn't even- Oh this is- Oh, oh...
( Sniper wipes a tear from his eye, having to take a deep breath and lean an arm on Scarecrow's shoulder to steady himself. )
You know nothin', mate. They didn't even tell ya your real target? The one that's actually dangerous?! Aw bugger, I feel bad for you...
(Scarecrow stared at them as they laughed, despite his expressionless mask they could feel his discust. He gave a huff,)
`` It is not my fault I dont know what my employers wont tell me. And the fact they wont just kill whoever is making you fight. Either way. I said it before. You're Blu. Not your problem. ``
(They shoved snipers arm off their shoulder and started to walk off again, this time much more stiff and angry.)
`` I'm just scouting it out anyways. ``
Aw hell, din't mean to make ya mad. Jus' shocked they don't know more if they've sent people here before... You're not the first, mate. Nor will you be the last.
Just tryna look out for your safety, 'sall.
( Sniper huffs, matching their pace again, this time beside Scarecrow. )
It might not be my business, but it doesn't stop me from caring.
Ah- And to answer your question from before, I recently learned that...
Well,
RED and BLU ain't as hostile 'round each other as I thought.
Not even orders can stop some of these blokes...
`` Look, I don't Care if I'm the first or last. And you shouldn't care either. I'm not on your side and you're not on their side either. I was told to do a job. ``
(He waved a hand towards them in an attempt to get them to just leave him be.. This was taking too much time and he just wanted to get this over with and less risk getting caught. He thought about just dealing with them right there, but he knows they will just come back and possibly alert the others.)
“Look, you’re right, and I get it.”
( While Scarecrow’s hand is out, Sniper takes it by the wrist, stopping and slightly pulling Scarecrow backwards. It’s not a rough movement by any means, nor is it an aggressive one; but it does serve to remind Scarecrow that he’s still on enemy territory, and not at all safe to be here, still. )
( Up close, there’s almost a reddish discoloration to the Sniper’s eyes. It’s probably just the shadow from his hat messing with your vision, though. Despite this, they shine with an earnesty and worry that could only be attributed to a father figure.)
“You’ve got a job t’ do, and… Knowin’ the nature of this kinda work, you’ll end up in a grave if ya don’t get it done.”
( He puts his free hand on Scarecrow’s shoulder, making sure that the two see each other eye to eye. )
“So let me help you.”
“I can getcha off the grid. I can find a place for you to go, but I can’t let ya do this, alright?”
(Scarecrow glared at them as was grabbed, getting shoved back. He shook a bit and jerked his hand away from it and to his knife in a purposefully threatening manner. He knew he was in dangerous territory, which the exact reason why he was so defensive. He flinched as they grabbed his shoulder, grabbing the knife but not pulling it out yet.)
`` The hell are you talking about?! Listen here, Sniper, why do you care? Would it be the same if I were going after the BLU? Are you just insane?! I am Not your friend and not inexperienced. ``
(He grabbed their hand and shoved it off with a growl, fuming now. The audacity.)
`` Here. Let's make a deal. You leave me be, and I Wont stab you in the throat. Maybe even leave. It's not worth the time right now either way.. ``
(Scarecrow sat on the top of the dumpster, one of his arms down behind it on the door. Frozen. He slowly turned his head to stare at the van, spotting sniper. He was mostly hidden, well, other than his goggles reflecting a bit.)
