It was terrible and he's pleased with himself, as he sips on his coffee.

"Your secret's safe with me, Ruby." Weiss said with a knowing smile, Even if she lied to Yang about Ruby's whereabouts, the blonde wouldn't believe her, knowing that the two of them were up to something.

The heiress grabbed two plates and a glass filled with milk for her teammate and placed them onto the table. It's only been a few months, but Weiss has already memorized what her friends like. And anytime she saw Ruby eat a cookie, she always had a glass of milk with her. "I don't think I want to know about Jaune."

Ruby started by dunking her piece of cooking in the milk, and then shoving the rest of it in her mouth. In never took her very long to eat her cookies.

"Jaune like's cookies," she said through a mouthful. "And he won't rat me out using the kitchen if I share with him."

Not that she did that often. Totally not.

Concern dancing in her eyes as she rested a hand on Ruby's shoulder, giving it a tight squeeze. "How about, we get out of here?" It was too noisy with all the shouting from their friends. She could hear Nora in the background arguing about something with Jaune, she wasn't what and frankly she didn't want to know. Perhaps then, her partner could think for a change. "Maybe grab some coffee or something and then you can tell me what's really going on."

After a moment, Ruby smiled, nodding. It might be nice to just... walk around. Get some coffee with her teammate.

"Yeah, okay." She reached for Weiss' hand, holding it firmly in her own. "Thanks, Weiss."

Well. They were getting somewhere, anyway. Kind of.

"I don't need your help, James," Qrow insisted. "I was trying to commiserate with you. Or something." Fuck, he didn't know what he was supposed to do now, with James acting all weird.

He took a sip of water.

"It's not... as bad as you make it out to be. I'm in control, most of the time. But when my semblance spikes I feel... helpless," he admitted quietly, taking another sip of water. "Not much I can do to dull that feeling now."

Not that he wants to pick up his bad habits again. Brothers, he could have lost Ruby and Yang because he was too busy wallowing in his pity party to notice the trouble. But it wasn't like he knew how else to manage it.

She knocks a fist lightly against his shoulder. “Hey,” a low mutter. “You did good. You do.”

Ozpin’s lying makes it complicated, sure. So does Salem being just… a person, one who deserved better than what life gave her; but that’s true of most people, and Summer can’t pretend that doing right by Salem means the same as doing good for the world. The ashes of two destroyed kingdoms say otherwise.

Complicated, for sure.

She shakes her head too, clears her throat. “Anyway. I bet–” The minute she thinks of it, an ugly snort of laughter bursts out of her, and Summer says, “Fuck, though. Think how accident-prone I’d be with a different semblance. I’d’ve spent my whole life hobbling around on broken toes or, or whatever. I’d make like a bird and slam headlong into every window in sight, just a total disaster.”

Qrow laughs, because it's been so long since he'd heard her genuinely laugh and because the image of her flying into a closed window brings him more joy than she can possibly imagine. It's probably a good thing she has what she has, and not something else.

"Ruby was like that, at first," he says fondly. "Her semblance started as just a speed semblance. Ran headfirst into almost every wall in the house. Thankfully her brain eventually caught up with her legs."

Now though... she'd probably go around the wall in two different directions and a burst of rose petals. It was something, to see how her semblance had evolved.

He can't quite help the tinge of jealousy inside him. The amount of times he'd wished for his semblance to evolve was... incalculable, really. But it is what it is.

"And Yang almost set the house on fire more than once. Not because she's clumsy, just because her semblance sets her on fire because why wouldn't it."
