Art Project # 2: Gif Series

“Narcissist Theater”

“Narcissist Theater” takes self-shot videos from the last 5 years and highlights a few seconds of each video. Sometimes a video contains more than one GIF-worthy clip. I tried to make them mostly re-usable for a general audience, but the main idea is fun. So feel free to share. If you’re having trouble with that, most devices let you save any GIF as an image/photo that you can upload just like a “still”.

I cannot wait till March 6th.

Reading and Response #2

20 or so years ago, gifs were uses as a novelty for a website. Like a fun colorful image flashing, or for naked women. The smaller size compared to full video files made them popular in the world of dialup. Nowadays, where you can stream a movie like its nothing, gifs have become memes, or response gifs.

I love this GIF collection. The anime is a different crowd to me, but I love the thread of students in our class placing “memes” from The Office in their work. I dig it. I’m all for it. More of it, I mean, come on. Even if I’m with Michael that we could have gone without Toby, but a goddamn thousand points for the hidden gem of Grim at the end. Tender choice.

One of my favorite things to watch on youtube are videos typically titled something like, "Videos that live in my head rent free" or "Pop culture moments that make me feel like I'm being gas lighted". This is the perfect gif commonly used in between hilarious clips.

If you haven't binged himym yet, please do. Neil Patrick Harris played the BEST character hands down.

This is the funniest moment in the entire New Girl series. I'm laughing now just thinking about it!

I love this gif because of how stupid kylie looks in it haha.

This is one of those pop culture moments that pops up amongst lots of these types of videos. I appreciate her intensity.

Well, it is a simple but hurtful question. This is something I would ask someone, but genuinely. Why are you the way that you are?

If you know what happened before this salute, then you get why this is so funny and has to be on my top 10 list... I feel kind of bad for making fun but c'mon...

Uncle Roger has popped up on my youtube shorts recently and I can't stop watching him. I like how "Haiyaa" is used as an insult when he uses it.

"Put it in reverse Terry!" I love quoting this randomly to get a good laugh from my partner. The craziness in this video paired with the words is hilarious to me.

What I dig here is the prominence on display from the characters in these GIFs. You have NPH (hard to beat, frankly), President Biden, a couple Kardashians (arguably prominent, but I’ll give it to ‘em lol), and last but not least, The World’s Greatest Boss: Michael Scott. I’m thinking I could use that one from the apparently-desperate-real-housewife who’s opinion just MUST be heard in a million different twitter feuds! So all in all a legit collection.

Disappearing Acts ~ "Attitude Adjustment" I am inspired by the natural beauty that is all around us. For this project I was inspired by a sort of funk I was feeling and my strong desire to get outside after a very cold January. I want my art to be bright, colorful, uplifting and I want to inspire joy and gratitude. This module inspired my husband and I to take an overnight road trip into the mountains and immerse ourselves in the beauty that we love so much about Colorado. I wanted to keep the photos natural looking but add color to express emotion. I used Adobe Lightroom to enhance the images.

Your use of vivid color in these images creates a very otherworldy, optimistic, exciting aesthetic.

Luxrious, adventurous… scenery disappears more than anything as a mountain woman carries us through a little of this, a little of that. I get a light hearted feeling from this.

I think what I would critique would be to add some sharpness to the images. As the artist edits in Lightroom I’d bring out the objects in their own respects. Even in the last photo, your elbows are kinda “overbright” unnaturally.

I do like it though (I promise lol).

Disappearing Acts

This set of photographic self portraits embodies disappearing to me. I often feel like I disappear on a daily basis. My anxiety often consumes what I consider to be my identity, leaving me a shell of a person. I used photoshop to manipulate these self portraits in an attempt to invoke anxiety. I tried to showcase different emotions such as panic and dissociation. I feel the dark color scheme adds an eerie dimension to the portraits.

These images definitely tell a collective story of the feelings you share. I think that your choices of color create a palpable mood for the viewer to experience and understand.

Forgive me if this is my favorite Disappearing Act. For the sheer scary-movie-gothic attitude it gives off to me. And I love that feeling. Though I know she’s playing peekaboo, in a million other contexts this could be horrific or distressing when there’s a woman dancing in the dark shadows behind the shower glass.

Is it a woman? Is it a ghost? Is she ok? Or is she just being romantically dramatic? In the fading light it’s anyones guess.

Art Project #1: Disappearing Acts

Fifteen Minutes: Artist Statement

Fifteen minutes. Fifteen minutes of solitude. Fifteen minutes to forget who I am, to forget where I live, forget my responsibilities, forget what has happened or what might happen. Fifteen minutes to will myself to disappear along with the suds circling the drain. Fifteen minutes.

Can the soaps, lotions, and serums perform miracles and bring the person I used to be back? If I scrub hard enough, can I wash away the stress of motherhood? How hot does the water have to be just so I can disappear?

When motherhood begins the person, you were before ceases to exist. Your whole day is fully dedicated to your child and the time that you have for yourself is compressed into precious minutes. In those minutes I spend each one transforming myself into nothing. In this simple act of showering, I can disappear for fifteen minutes.

On the one hand, you have the fashion risk of raw beauty, which I think is tastefully executed here. On the other, you have a glimpse in to #Motherhood from the mother’s OWN CAMERA. Every time a mother takes a camera into her motherhood in the digital art arena we remember how tough these badasses are.

A real treat here, one would be foolish to ignore, is that she decompressed. Trying to make her stress disappear.

I thought this was an interesting exercise in minimalism, shyness, and a taste of what may have been felt when the ancestors of drama thought of the comedy/tragedy masks. There’s a reason for the masks we wear, and sometimes it’s make something uncomfortable disappear. Like anxiety.

Art Project #1: Disappearing Acts

The term “disappearing” itself obviously means for something to be gone, one way or another, and it is not dictated by if those ways are positive or negative, or even wanted in the first place. People often then get greedy when faced with this, and I am not saying that I am an exception, but, I do view something outside or inside myself “disappearing” to be natural. Yes, I would love to stay as a naive kid for just a bit longer, yes, I would love to have beloved pets and family members returned to me, however, I have learned that having an unhealthy attachment can do much more harm than good. So, instead of wistfully wishing for certain things back, I fondly remember them in their entirety as best as I can, along with slightly comparing with what is there now in its place, physically and mentally. Besides, it is fun to see how I have grown and be in awe at the progress that I have gone through.. Plus, I am passionate about 2D art for a reason, so, why not also add that along with my photos to make my thoughts even more apparent?

Looking at these photos made me feel quite happy! I definitely got the sense of looking back at fond memories. I enjoyed the themes with the stickers, often times the stickers can communicate what isn't necessarily obvious in the photos.

I love the silly doodles you added to the photos, it adds alot of your personality into the photos and helps add to the story you are telling

I dig this hardcore photobio because it says “real” to me. If you notice, a pink shirt shows in the baby photo, disappears through the years, and comes back at the cap and gown photo. I thought that was brilliant whether the artist thought of that or it was a happy accident lol

So… what I really wanted was the Anne Hathaway Catwoman GIF where she says “oops” and shrugs, but Tumblr had one of the most iconic Catwoman scenes that as a long term Batman fan I couldn’t ignore putting Michelle Pfeiffer back in her place… on top of Michael Keaton.

After all, what is ART without a little sexy?
