❛... how long have you been standing there? ❜
a meme of which i forgot the source but im inspired now ig @murasakiirohana
yoshino doesn't answer.
the sky has changed colors outside her window. it's now closer to the dark purple of night. she hasn't really noticed, her eyes frozen on the small altar she, shikamaru and ino had put together for the wake.
it ended a few hours ago, probably. she noticed the background noise of voices coming from the other room thinning out, little by little. the last one to go had been a gruff, low, steady sound – chouza's voice.
but yoshino hadn't moved. after spending most of the "private" – nothing was private anymore once you were one of konoha's heroes – gathering, away from the crowds and from the elders, she had snuck back in and stood there, fixated on the pictures of both her husband and her best friend that she had lost in what she could only describe as a flash.
so yoshino doesn't answer, because she doesn't know how long she's been here. she just knows she cannot look away, because looking away means putting an end to the last bit of remembrance the village will offer to two of the most important people in her life. because looking away means moving past the ceremonies, past the officiality of death, past the smokescreen that it provided her to avoid the harsh truth of it all.
her bed will be empty tonight.
she's found him alone with his reflection, taking an uncharacteristically hard look at himself. he tries not to feel embarrassed that she has caught him; after all, it is a big change to undergo. "i look different." he manages, coughing to cover any insecurities that might be hidden underneath the words. it's been a few months since the mission on which he attained the scars on the side of his face, giving the skin adequate time to heal. thus, this is the way he would look for the rest of his life.
he leaves his reflection and turns for her, nervousness causing his hands to flex. he doesn't reach out for her, however, simply fixing her with his gaze. yoshino always manages to understand what he's really asking.
(is he as handsome as he once was to her?)
she leans against the doorway once she's breeched his line of vision, waiting for him to acknowledge her presence. shikaku knows she is there, just like she knows when he enters a room despite them not making eye contact. it's something ethereal about it, to sense the shift in the air around you, a shift so precisely shaped like the person you love.
yoshino isn't surprised to see him study himself in the mirror. he's tried to keep it on the down-low, catching glimpses when he thinks she's not looking. but she doesn't expect him to get used to the scars like one gets used to a new haircut; they're now a permanent feature on his face, a constant reminder.
(in a way, she does blame herself. those scars are a direct result of him protecting her, throwing himself in front of danger to make sure she'd come out unscathed. maybe it is as much a reminder to her as it is to him.)
their eyes cross in the mirror before he speaks, before he makes a meagre attempt at hiding what exactly he was doing. yoshino knows, though, that his brain is anything but kind. the scars, while visible, are still little compared to what most people face in war. she also knows his mind will remind him he is selfish to look at them with anything but pride.
"you do," she says it softly, pushing herself off and coming to lean against their bathroom vanity, right next to him. yoshino knows he won't say more. shikaku has always been a man of few words. when he looks at her finally, her eyes do not leave his as she reaches for his hand.
"and yet, you're still you."
❛ long story short , it was a bad time . ❜
taylor swift lyrics meme @murasakiirohana
“i know, love,” yoshino answers easily, as she throws her arm around ino’s shoulders. she has known this kid her entire life. she has seen her through every doubt, every milestone. of course, she knew how much life had thrown at her, while expecting her to come out unscathed. ino was a talented kunoichi with a legacy to uphold and their world was anything but kind to those who carried possibility.
“you made it through, though,” she gently encourages ino’s head to fall on her shoulder. she is so much older now, far from the baby yoshino once held. but even in adulthood ino will always find safety here.
the bond makes it impossible for anyone to parent just their own child; but beyond that, yoshino owes it to inoichi who didn’t make it here. she owes it to ino and her strength through losing her dad and having far too much pushed onto her young shoulders.
yoshino drops a whisper of a kiss on ino's blonde hair. “and sometimes, that’s enough.”

@scariestnara // STARTER CALL.
“I had to do it…”
Words only confirm his awareness of the selfishness of his decision to go on the mission, the risk he had put the clan at in his absence. It had been a reckless move, out of character for someone so usually bound by logic and strategy, but there had been too much going on in his head following the aftermath of the war. Too much responsibility suddenly thrust upon him as well as his own goals to strive for in the time limit he had until Naruto ascended to his dream seat.
“I shouldn’t have made you worry, but I needed this. I’m home now…” His words fall short of an apology, if only because he knows they would both know if wouldn’t be genuine if he did. He does not regret going, only that she suffered because of it.
“you needed this? to go out there and put your life on the line?” her face is stern, because if she lets herself soften, she knows any attempt at anger will be pointless. he has always been her weak point, ever since he was born. yoshino is angry, she is furious, but she is also a mother who has spent the last week terrified she might never see her son again. she’s angry, but she is relieved. a paradox she has learned to welcome as she became a parent.
yoshino has lived through enough to know just why shikamaru might have needed this. she has seen her friends, her comrades, her family cope in every awful way one can imagine. she knows what war brings out in people, what demons it unleashes, what wounds it opens. she had even wished for their generation to be the last, and yet here they were again.
“i didn’t just worry, shikamaru, i thought you were dead,” she spits the words like they are flashing, burning hot ambers. she had, the second someone had confirmed her fears that he was off on a mission, imagined the worst. of course, she had. her heart was already broken, barely held together by sheer will and duty; it had not taken much to wreck it again.
“you have a responsibility here, you can’t just up and run to your death like it won’t have consequences.”

thirdstartokonoha:
the realization that she likes shikamaru’s mother is instant. upon meeting her, it is obvious to temari that she is a kind woman, that she doesn’t have to be nervous, that she’s actually going to give her a chance to be judged on her own merits rather than her father’s. yoshino gives her a bow in return, making temari thinks her was unnecessary, but she tries not to pay attention to the doubtful thought that crosses her mind which tells her so. “yoshino.” temari corrects herself. “it’s really nice to meet you, too.”
as they study each other, all temari can see is how much yoshino looks like her son. it’s in the kindness contained in his eyes, first and foremost. she had never seen shikamaru’s father so close up, but even so, temari is sure that any resemblance to shikaku nara was superficial, similar to any resemblance she bore to her mother. if you looked deeper, you saw the resemblance to her father concealed beneath the amount of melanin expressed by her hair and eyes.
yes, she does want to go along with him, but since the emotion is out of fear of being left alone with yoshino, temari shakes her head no. she and shikamaru exchange a quick glance after she announces her intention to stay behind–she knows he is silently asking if she’s really alright with this. she nods and smiles, though not convincingly enough to dispell all of the doubt from his eyes, and follows yoshino into the kitchen. somewhat awkwardly, she stands rather than sits.
“it smells good,” temari tries, only just remembering how to small talk, “is it a pork-based dish?” glancing around yoshino, temari is impressed with the number of tasks she seems to be managing simultaneously–there seems to be a broth of some sort in one pan, which smells strongly of yellow miso, at least two, possibly three, different vegetables steaming, a rice cooker just off the stove, and something else that temari isn’t quick to identify.
“my brother does most of the cooking.” temari admits, before realizing how that might sound to her boyfriend’s mother. a little too loudly, she adds, “not that i’m unwilling to learn!”
yoshino offers a reassuring smile to her son as he steps back outside. she knows the look he and temari just shared; it is one she has personal experience with. there is something so soft about the way partners check in with each other in this small way, through just the eyes. shikaku and her could have entire conversations by just looking at each other and while the thought does make her heart ache, she doesn't linger on it. those were happy memories, souvenirs of a bond so strong it didn't need words. she won't let it be tainted by grief just yet.
yoshino then walks back through the hallways towards the kitchen. "ah, thank you! it is, yes. ginger pork as a main, i hope you'll like it." she stands beside the stove, stirring the stove gently. "what do you like to eat, temari? shikamaru barely gave me enough to go off when he said you were coming for dinner." yoshino leans against the counter, crossing her arms loosely on her chest as she listens to temari.
"oh, he does? that's great!" yoshino has to keep in a slight chuckle when she witnesses temari's attempt at saving grace, as one would say. there is no grace to be saved though, not in yoshino's eyes; shikamaru is a decent enough cook because she insisted on teaching him. she had no expectations for anyone he would bring home, beyond his happiness. "cooking should be a pleasure, not a chore, so only learn if you'd like."
and a chore it was, at first. it had become something she enjoyed over the years. but the younger version of herself would definitely have sneered at the idea of staying home and cooking meals for a husband and son; so she can understand temari's urgency at reassurance. being a homemaker when marrying a clanhead is, after all, custom.
in yoshino's book, it is by far the least of her worries. she had taken on the role with grace... not necessarily by choice. how hypocritical would she be to expect more of the person dating her son, than what she herself had been willing to give?
"oh, what a poor host i make! can i offer you something to drink?" yoshino speaks as she covers one of the pans and lowers the heat, keeping everything warm until shikamaru makes his way back. she keeps her tone light, friendly, trying her best to make this comfortable... as comfortable as meeting your mother-in-law can be.
who do i have to bribe to get some parents on the dash i have chocolate
how much shit are yall gonna give me if i tell you i am this close to dropping money on fornite just to have pakkun on my back
plots please!
@fightingdreamcrs asked for plotty plots!
me thinks u want the nara bois so i'm giving u the nara bois
shikadai and yoshino deserve grandma/grandson time. i like to imagine him begrudgingly going with her on walks after she insists but really, he's happy to spend time with her. also i need her to tell him about shikaku; he won't only know of his grandfather from history books and sugarcoated war stories. also pls consider older shikadai still spending time with his grandma and catching up with her thank u
i want shikamaru learning about yoshino's past. i want him to have that conversation with her, about who she was, about how his parents became who they were, about her generation and the wars they went through. i also would love to explore his taking over of the clan and its responsibilities, up to even his marriage with temari and her own arrival into the hierarchy. i am also and will always be a sucker for grandma yoshino still mothering him when he's a grown adult.
there are so many things i want to explore with shikaku and yoshino's relationship. their youth, how they fell for each other, but also their trauma and the war and how they handled being in love, wanting a future while being soldiers. i would love to explore how your shikaku fits within all my hcs about yoshino's pregnancy, how she quits duty and becomes a full time parent. and i'd love to see an AU where he survives and how they manage to heal, but always together. how they finally can see an endgame, despite everything.
