it's hard to say what got you into dragonry. you were bedrotting, and then suddenly you got a whole string of videos about it, and for some reason thought it was cool and you could do it. all things told, you acted rather impulsively about it and went to a shelter and picked out a dragon that night
the next morning, you had almost forgotten about it. you didn't really have any plans except just to bedrot again. how long had you been in this funk for- it's tuesday, so this is almost 3 weeks? you don't even have a reason. everything just sucks
your plans to "everything just sucks" were cut short pretty abruptly when the dragon you suddenly remembered you adopted started nipping at you until you got up. god her teeth are sharp. suddenly, you're dreading this. what are you doing? you can't take care of a dragon, you can't even take care of yourself.
whatever. you've made a commitment. you should try to honor it for at least a little while and if it doesn't work out for you, whatever, you can return her. so you sit down at your computer and you start reading articles and papers about dragons, and she curls up at your feet for hours while you research
after persistent googling, you're pretty sure she's a mixed breed containing mostly Northern Diver, a ground hunting and fishing breed originating from New England. she's got the indigo-and-white coloration, but the horns aren't right and her talons are a bit too big, so whatever she's crossed with is probably also a hunting breed. apparently, Divers are known for being intelligent, easy to train, and affectionate, while having relatively high drives. you look down at her, half-asleep with her head on your foot. she is really pretty. you lever your foot free and use it to gently scritch her behind the horns, and she starts purring a bit and opens a golden eye to stare at you
what else is important to know? ok, dragons can eat basically anything humans can. that's good, it means you don't have to go buy food for her. to avoid boredom, you should be working her pretty hard for at least an hour a day. you can do that; you don't have a job anyway. her breed is apparently a decent time commitment but you aren't doing anything else, so sure. you read a bunch of papers about enrichment and living spaces for dragons and stuff and decide you're probably qualified for this, then you get in the car and go to the store. she comes with you. you buy a big leather glove for her to perch on, as well as some toys
next, you go to the park. she trots along beside you until you reach a lake, and then she leaps into the air and pirouettes, twirling into the water and popping back up a moment later with a large fish in her claws, which she devours, bones and all, in less than a minute. you look around anxiously, worried you'll get in trouble, but there are people fishing in the lake so it's probably fine
you get dinner. you can't make yourself cook, so you just go to a little local place. you figure they allow (well-behaved) dogs so they probably won't have an issue with dragons. you were not figuring she would just hop up into the booth on the other side of the table and then use one claw to order off the menu. apparently she can read. interesting
over the course of the next week, you learn that she basically doesn't even need to be trained, she's smart enough and understands you well enough to just kind of do what you tell her. in return, you lavish attention on her. you start doing things a lot more because she physically won't let you lay around. she's not particularly small, and sometimes when you try to watch tv or youtube and she wants to go out, she jumps up on the tv stand and opens her wings in front of it and screeches like a demon until you put your coat on
she really does love to hunt. you take her to a lot of parks, and she usually finishes off a couple fish or a few squirrels or something, and you realize that she's probably going to mess the environment up and you need a solution for this. you're not really sure what else to do, so you hit up a discord server with some friends of yours and go "@everyone does anyone want to get hunted by my dragon"
it's a surprisingly big hit. you get five or six friends of yours in local driving distance who want to come out and meet her, and you go to a corn maze and she hunts them through it. they turn it into a game where whoever can "survive" her the longest wins and the person with the shortest time after three rounds has to buy dinner for everyone. it's clearly really stimulating for her, too - a human is clearly way harder to catch than a squirrel, even if she is big enough to take one down with relative ease. you have a brief moment of horror the first time she slams into one of your friends to bring them down, thinking about that being you, but then she happily purrs and covers them in kisses, and you realize you're fine
she sleeps in your bed now. a bunch of the articles you read said that you probably shouldn't let your dragon do that, but you're starting to notice that most of the articles talk about dragonry like it's dog training, and you know by now she's just as intelligent as you are even if most people don't view dragons that way. you start researching AAC solutions for her so she can talk to you - she clearly understands your language well enough, she should be able to communicate in it. you find a little enchanted pendant that should work. you have to order it from overseas, so it takes a couple weeks, but once you get it and put it on her, she seems overjoyed that she can talk to you
she mostly uses it to demand scritches. but she's also apparently really into philosophy, which is both unexpected and really funny to you
by this point, you're so used to her intelligence that it's normal to you. it's less like having a pet and more like having a roommate who really likes hanging out with you and hisses if you try to kick her out of your bed. when her heat hits and she asks if you would be comfortable fucking her, you don't even consider it, you just take off your clothes. her tongue is really skilled, apparently, and she's also quite the fan of your fingers. you wake up to her giving you head every day for a week, and you fuck multiple times a day until her heat is over. you two don't have a formal word for what you are, but she's basically your girlfriend at this point
you join a local queer dragonry group, and it turns out your experiences are really common. most of the dragoners there have a polycule thing going, where they date someone(s) else but then also their dragon. you meet a lot of really cute people and fuck a few of them. your dragon is also always involved because she gets really playfully possessive of you
you wake up in bed. it's a saturday and the sun is already up. you're nude; you've slept that way for a month or so because you like how her scales feel against your body and she likes your body heat. she's still asleep, but you reach over your body and pet her head and her claws, gently digging into your skin, twitch a bit and she grumbles happily. she's not even very much smaller than you, she's probably about the size of a german shepherd at this point? you take a moment to contemplate how cool it is that you're in love with a hyperefficient solitary predator. if she wanted to, she could kill you in about a second right now, but you love and trust each other enough that her finger-long teeth are an inch from your eye and you're not worried at all. that's kinda awesome
you must have said that out loud because she opens one eye and sleepily licks a rough, wet stripe up the side of your head. you can't help but blush, and she notices. she nibbles at your neck as she shifts her weight on top of you and moves her claws to pin your hands above your head
