TBI May Increase Early Death Risk
According to a new study performed at Oxford University in England, survivors of a traumatic brain injury are three times as likely to die prematurely as those who have never suffered a TBI. Researchers studied the records of more than 2 million Swedish patients as part of the study. Approximately 218,000 of the patients had suffered a TBI, and more than 150,000 of the subjects were siblings of TBI survivors. The study found several trends among the survivors of TBIs that varied from the general population.

Parents who send children out on the field like to think that they are protecting them with a sturdy football helmet, but a new study shows that currently used helmets may do little to protect the player from a side-of-the-head hit or a rotation force hit. These types of hits are blamed for high levels of encephalopathy or brain injury.

Neuroimaging as a Biomarker for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
A common point-of-view about mild traumatic brain injury, or concussion, is that its effects are short-lived, and that the patient will return to normal without intervention. Although most people may indeed spontaneously recover fully after a mild traumatic brain injury, it is also becoming clear that neurological changes may persist in the brainâeven after the patient is no longer experiencing outward symptoms or complications.

Can Head Injuries Increase Stroke Risks?
Research presented at the American Stroke Associationâs International Stroke Conference 2014 suggests that suffering a head or neck injury can increase the risk of ischemic stroke threefold in patients under the age of 50. Researchers studied the records of 1.3 million patients under the age of 50 who had been treated in emergency rooms for head trauma and found that about 11 out of 100,000 of them had suffered a stroke within four weeks of their accidents. This means that an average of 214 people per month in the United States could be suffering strokes after head trauma. The average age of these stroke patients was 37, although children and older adults also suffered strokes after head injuries.
