Strength/Jekyll and Hyde for the Literary Tarot

H.E. Edgmon paired The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with Strength, a card of self-control and inner power when upright, and raw emotion and self-doubt when reversed. The novella’s core conceit - the struggle for control over one’s self turned literal - is a darker take on the card’s themes of Ego vs Id, and made for an interesting fit.

I had a lot of fun drawing this one! Love a good archetypal mad scientist. Ultimately we chose the thumb that showed a haggard Jekyll attempting to reverse the effects of the potion, aware of what his alternate self is willing to do when given free reign and desperately trying to regain a measure of power over his own form. There’s a little reference to the classic card illustration - a woman taming a lion - in the design of the mirror frame, which was fun to sneak into the background!

Hyde is described as uncanny, but not necessarily Ugly as all hell, Can he act and do things that are gross? Yes. Can he BE a little gross? Yes. But it never once actually says Hyde is outright hideous, because that would be an actual descriptor Enfield could use in the beginning.

Alright. First one that came to mind and I roll my eyes at the thought that I have to specify this.

Hyde is an asshole. There's no other way to put it. He is the worst person you'd ever meet. I mean, trampled a child? Don't get desensitized because you hear it all the time, that is horrible. He hit a random woman he encountered and manipulated a whole inn to do his bidding, and obviously enjoyed it.

He's canonically not a little meow-meow, misunderstood villain trope character. No, he's an outright sadist with no reasoning behind it other than he enjoys it. There's no excuse.
